From Maryland To Sweden To Virginia

Who knew going to IKEA would take over our whole day!?

OK, OK, I’m sure many of you knew 🙂

Other than gasping with glee when I opened up organized drawers (I NEED an IKEA kitchen someday…)

IMG_4672Blog

…we were on the hunt for bakery furniture!

We considered this chair…

IMG_4668Blog-2

But think we’re going with this one instead! Along with a wooden top bistro table.

ChairBlog

Considering this for the office

IMG_4671Blog

And a couple of these – painted mossy green – for the merchandise

IMG_4677Blog

Although these were cool!

IMG_4674Blog

In the midst of it all (2PM!) we got very hungry. Luckily Megan gave me a few 18 Rabbits bars (where she interned last summer) that I still had in my purse. Hunger avoided.

IMG_4681Blog

We picked out a few things for our household too! It’s too dark to photograph them now, but I’m happy to say we escaped only spending $60 (including 2 cutting boards for the bakery)

IMG_4682Blog-2

As we excited, we split a frozen yogurt cone! People always ask me if I ever just eat junk food for lunch and hide it from the blog. The answer> is I DO eat junk for lunch sometimes, but I would never hide it from the blog!

Ice creamBlog

We ended up eating our REAL lunch at 6PM! So I guess we had ice cream for lunch and salads for dinner 🙂

IMG_4688Blog

Per usual, upon returning home from vacation we stopped into Whole Foods for groceries and with all the unpacking we had to do, cooking did not sound as fun as treating ourselves to a ready-made dinner. Fast food!

This was one of the BEST salad bar creations I’ve ever had! I think it was the base of steamed kale on the bottom instead of watery lettuce. Loved every bite!

SaladBlog-2

Thanks to MOM and GRAM for giving me some of their fabulous antique linens! I have a ton of cute blog backdrops coming up!

IMG_4700Blog-2

The return of sparkling water!!

IMG_4694Blog-2

IMG_4687Blog

I spent tonight hanging with Karen, unpacking, and doing some cleaning projects. I haven’t done the Home Neat Home post on cleaning yet, but it’s coming. Soon. I promise!! I have a new miracle product to share.

Just a warning on all that dark furniture….dust shows badly as do fingerprints. I have lots of black furniture in my house and when the sun shines on it, watch out!
    It’s very modern looking though:)

We have the desk (black) that you’re contemplating and love it!

purchase a few clear desk pads (i believe they’re call PROJS – $5.99 /each) and carefully using an exacto knife, cut them so that they fit together and cover the surface of your desk. this way, the desk will be protected and can easily be wiped clean. we did this and it works fantastically!

we also purchased a few sets of drawers and doors to go in the shelf and they also work really well!

Ikea is just so overwhelming sometimes! I love looking through the “square foot homes”. My husband gets ideas on how we can live in a small space. 🙂 Hmm..although 400 sq. feet is a bit too small for me.

Does Great Harvest give you a fund to buy furniture for the bakery or is it out of your own pocket?

the thing about ikea furniture is that it does not last at all!!! bottoms fall out of drawers, shelves cave under the slightest load, and chairs fall apart… its cheap for a reason. Just a forewarning, you may be upgrading within 18 months.

Y’day my aunt goes to me: ‘what if you meet a guy who only eats good food’ (implying that my food tastes crap because it’s healthy?)! I STRONGLY recommend you get something more sturdy than Ikea furniture for the bakery. That is not industrial strength furniture, which you will need. You can check out auctions for second hand shelving from shops that have closed etc, it will be much stronger and last you longer than anything from Ikea, which is all particle board that bends with weight and over time.

Shopping is always exciting…and Ikea is always inspiring. Take it from a really old and experienced grandma…select the sold wood, plastic, whatever for chairs, tables, shelves. The wicker, rattan and other open materials look great…but are impossible to clean after a while. Think about how things will look after five years…not how they look when they’re new;-)

I also have the dark gray metal shelves in my bathroom, and I can say they are VERY sturdy! I have the wooden shelf in my laundry room, and it is NOT as sturdy!

    I love IKEA 🙂
I’d caution you against those bookcases though — I’ve known several people who’ve had them, and they’ve always fallen apart. They aren’t sturdy at all in the long run. (that said, I have other solid-sided IKEA bookcases that have been excellent for years and years — just not those open sided/backed ones)

I love IKEA! We have those black chairs at work and although neat looking, they’re fairly uncomfortable because of how upright the back is. Also, the legs bend out really easily. We’ve had to throw out a lot of them because the legs bend out under weight (and it doesn’t have to be a lot of weight, just from plopping down in them).
