Desayuno Romantico

I decided last night that the husband and I needed to spend some quality time together since we are seeing so little of each other these days, so I set the alarm 15 minutes earlier so we could have a romantic breakfast together today instead of trying to eat and blog and get ready at the same time. It was nice 🙂

We are also out of pre-made oats, so I made some on the stove top . One bonus to making them in advance in the summer is you can reheat them as much or as little as you want. This bowl was quite hot coming straight from the stove-top, so I sort of missed my luke warm microwaved oats!

Out of wheatberries as well so I made 1/2 cup portions with skim/banana/flax/vanilla topped with blueberry granola plank and almond butter –

Today should be busy but low-key. I’ve got an exam review this morning, then a visit to a soup kitchen ! Then maybe lunch at EarthFare on my way out of town, then papers, workout, and lab. It’s "Friday!" Too bad I’ve got 4 big projects to complete this weekend, including another chem take-home test.

    That’s a great idea.
I might suggest that to my parents, lol.
They are so busy all the time.

You breakfast looks great, as always.
    Have a good day!

P.S. I made you husbands “whole wheat bread experiment” bread. I trippled the 50-50 ratio recipe. It turned out so well. My family was really impressed. =]

    Kath,

Do you think that breakfast is your highest calories meal of the day? I don’t count calories (or anything) but I do find that the more substantial my breakfast is, the less hungry I am the rest of the day.

Hi Kath, I’m new to the blog, but have a few random questions, so I hope you (and other bloggers) bear with me…

First, I gathered from other posters (and your FAQ) you used to count calories but now don’t, right? Do you find you do a mental count anyway estimating the amount approx for each meal? I ask b/c I sometimes find myself doing this but think I overestimate b/c if it wasn’t for the scale, I would lose weight (luckily I never go long w/out checking to make sure I’m the same weight). Just wondering if you ever had this problem.

Also, I recently started going back to school as well to complete my premed requirements and noticed the chemistry often uses health-related examples (like talking about radiology as we learn about nuclear decay). Do you find they try to do more nutrition related things in your chemistry class?

    Thanks!

That’s so sweet! I leave for work before 6, so my husband is usually still asleep 🙁 But you just have to carve out time where you can, right?

    Happy “Friday”!

    Aw, that’s so nice!

hey, did you purchase from the Honest Foods store yet? Thanks for the heads up – after I read your post, I went to buy some planks and squares. You said shipping was included and it also says so on their website.

But when I go to check out, it makes me choose a shipping option. And it’s around $30 shipping! It won’t let me checkout unless I choose shipping.

So I was wondering if the same thing is happening for you? Or anyone else out there?

I’m going to try calling later. They are in CA – so I have to wait a few hours since I’m on the east coast.

    Thanks! Happy “Friday”!

Haha I just got really excited there for a second thinking it really was friday today ooops….

I had my first trip to Whole Foods yesterday and I loved it! It was so huge I spent over an hour in there and I think I was hit by about 10 shopping carts… it was crowded!
AND no one ever told me how cute the workers there were!! … the butcher boys, o and not to mention the deli clerks!

haha okay I’m done but you can bet I have found my new grocery store( i might have to bring cart bumpers and a helmet next time though ; )

    Suzanne,
I also just tried to order from the Honest Foods store and it’s charging me like $25 shipping!! If you speak to them, can you let me know what gives??

    Kath,
I’m so jealous of all the gorgeous fresh CSA produce you get! I’m thinking of joining one when I move up to Boston at the end of next month. Is it expensive to join? Is anyone else a member of one who could tell me a little more about it?

    Have a great day! 🙂

Oyvey – I always drool over restaurant week and then hardly ever end up making it out. I still like looking at the menus…although, I really don’t think it’s that good of a deal because when I go out to eat, I never get dessert and usually just share an appetizer, so I end up spending MORE with the prix fixe menu. Still fun though!

    Hi Kath!

I read your blog pretty regularly, and I just wanted to say hello! As you can see from my name I’m in NC as well (Greensboro)…it’s way too hot here!

Anyway, great job with the blog, good luck with school (I finished my Master’s degree last year and have to say that I miss being in school!), and enjoy your weekend!

If you go to the link Kath gave and click on one of the boxes of the planks, it’ll give you the nutrition panel and ingredients list. Hope that helps!

kp- way to be gramatically correct 🙂 Even though I’m majoring in spanish soon I had to stop and think about what desayuna was- then the vocab hit me: desayunar: to eat breakfast. Oh don’t you love forgetting things over summer!

When I get up before Shaun (like this morning) but am here when his alarm goes off, I always hop in bed for a quick 15 minute cuddle. It’s seriously my favorite time of the day.

Help! I have been on a search for wheatberries for the past few months since Kath started eating them (LOVE to chew) but I can’t seem to find them at any of my local Whole Foods stores! Are they ever called something else?! Any suggestions for where to try next?

Locally, I can only find them at the health food store (We don’t have Whole Foods) but you can buy them on amazon.com along with many other whole grains.

    Re. Desayuna/o,
I just changed it!! What is it!?!? I need an expert here!

    Christie ,
I’d say lunch is my biggest (usually around 500 kcal), but breakfast is not far behind (usually 400-500).

    mo ,
You’re correct – I used to keep a food diary at CalorieKing but recently stopped food journaling and am now just keeping a lose tally in my head. Instead of counting up the whole day, I now estimate each meal – when I’m packing my lunch I’ll count up appx. how many calories (and food groups) I have to gauge if I should add another item. Same with putting servings on my plate at dinner or making an oatmeal concoction. Of course this doesn’t limit me to not have more if I’m still hungry (or save something for later if I’m full) but it gives me an idea of how I stand. I aim for meals around 500 kcal +/- 100 and then I aim for 200-300 in snacks to get close to 1800. I’m sure some days (and meals) I’m under and some I’m waaay over, but that’s what the whole squiggly line approach to maintenance is for.

As for chem, sometimes they use health examples, but not often because it’s not a nutritional chem class.

    Suzanne ,
I haven’t ordered yet because I’m not out. I’ll email my contact and see what she says.

    Ashliqua ,
CSAs range in price a lot depending on how much you get, how often, delivery and location etc. I think $20-30 per delivery is probably standard.

    NC_Runner,
Hot here too! Just turned on the AC! Let me know if you want to come to CLT for a lunch or dinner date 🙂

    nancy ,
Click on the planks box photo at http://www.honest-foods.com.

    courty ,
You can order them directly from Bob’s Red Mill:

desayuna is when your telling someone to have breakfast and it is also the conjugation of the verb desayuno in the third person.

desayuno is masculine and it means breakfast. so K u are correct! Romantic Breakfast = Desayuno Romantico

Ashliqua, Kath, and anyone else interested in ordering from the Honest Foods web site –

I just called them and the nice woman (Muriel) asked: ‘Oh were you the one who emailed me earlier?’ And I said – ‘nope, this is my first time calling.’

Apparently, she was asked the same question today multiple times. She is working on finding out what the deal is.

She said it is supposed to be free shipping if it’s over a certain dollar amount. So it sounds like the shipping is not included in the list price (as is currently stated). It will probably be like any other site where you add it at the end. But it won’t be $30 like it’s saying now!

She said she would email me as soon as she straightened it out. So I’ll update you guys as soon as I know. 🙂
