Cut & Polished

‘Twas a productive morning! When I have the choice I like to have a leisurely breakfast and a leisurely workout thereafter, but I think I am most productive when I exercise first, eat second. Oh the woes of choices!

I had a meeting this morning about the blog summit – get excited – we’re moving forward full steam from this point. We should be announcing the date and details within the week.

After that, I went to get our wedding rings cleaned. Sparkle City!

IMG_7190 (1024x768)

And then I got all my hairs cut. Boy was this not the best experience. I think I must have been the woman’s first client out of cosmotology school because she cut my very straight hair in zig zags. (You can’t just cut straight across – there are hidden chunks!) She ended up having to go way shorter than I had wanted to fix the mistakes. I wanted something “short and sleek” for summer but I don’t think I look very good short and sleek 🙁 Longer and layered seems to suit my face better, I think.

So needless to say I’m not that thrilled with my current ‘do:

IMG_7203 (1024x768)

After that I went by Goodwill to drop off some donations and then came home for a late lunch around 2:30. (Thank goodness for second breakfast!)

I had been envisioning salmon salad stuffed into a pita all early afternoon, so that’s what I made.

IMG_7202 (1024x768)

The salmon salad served two (I saved half for later):

  • 1 can wild Alaskan salmon
  • ~1 cup of chopped cuc, carrot and green pepper
  • ~1 tbsp Guilden’s mustard (the best EVER!!)
  • ~2 tsp curry powder
  • ~2 tbsp Dannon plain yogurt (which was BOGO free this week)

IMG_7197 (1024x768)

IMG_7196 (1024x768)

My pita ripped open, but it was still great.

IMG_7201 (1024x768)

The “lid” is always the best part of a pita!!!

IMG_7200 (1024x768)

Served with a chopped apple + cinnamon.

IMG_7199 (1024x768)

IMG_7198 (1024x768)

After lunch I sipped some Lipton Rainforest Alliance tea on the couch and caught up with the Real Housewives 😳

i wanted a new style for summer too, but opted to just cut some bangs myself. i don’t recommend this either! lol i don’t look too crazy buy hair on your forehead in the heat of summer is not cool. (literally) My friend said she would trim up the rest for me soon. that salmon mix looks terrific. ahh my grocery list just keeps growing.

I actually like the new do, but I can see what you mean about it not being what you asked for. Maybe you’d want to try a few side-swept bangs next time (and a new stylist ;))? HOWEVER, I still think it suits you well! 🙂

YUMMY lunch! What a great salmon salad! Was the salmon canned or fresh?

Hope the rest of your day is productive as well!

    1) Rings are beautiful!! I can’t wait until my boyfriend drops to one knee—when, not sure of course.

    2) I really like your hair. Just too short for you? Well, it looks fabulous.

    3) That sandwich looks so tasty. I’ll have to try this. What kind of pita bread do you use? I’ve always been afraid to use canned salmon. I love canned tuna so I guess I should put myself out there and taste it.

I agree with everyone- your hair looks adorable! I usually hate my haircuts at first when I’m not used to them, but then they grow on me/I get used to them. However, when I lived in NC I got the WORST haircuts in the world– people just don’t seem to know how to cut hair there. But if you hair looks as good in real life as it does in the pic than you have nothing to be worried about– super cute.
Your rings look so beautiful all clean & sparkly!

    Hi Kath,
I hope you don’t mind my attempting to use you as a source of free nutritional information, but you’re one of the most balanced eaters I “know”, so I thought I’d be cheeky and ask anyway!

In the last couple of years, I’ve completely revamped my diet, cutting out refined flour and sugar, focusing on whole grains, fruits, vegetables and vegetarian sources of protein. Basically, I’ve eaten the way every health site, magazine and professional tells me to eat. 🙂 In the process, I’ve lost almost 50 pounds.

However, I’ve recently been suffering from fairly excruciating abdominal pain that my GP thinks might be Irritable Bowel Syndrome. I’m thus having to have a bit of a rethink about my diet, since, unfortunately, almost all of the foods that I love and that form 95% of my diet are on the list of “insoluble fiber” sources that can exacerbate IBS symptoms. I’ve got into such a mindset that “white flour = evil” that it’s difficult for me to try to get my head around that fact that possibly for some peoples’ bodies and digestive systems, refined (“nutrition-less”) grains could actually be “healthier” than whole grains.

Do you think that it’s a ‘bad’ thing to switch to eating white bread and cutting back on some of the whole grains and fibrous vegetables, as long as you’re still trying to fit in nutrients where you can? Every site I read, it seems, people are advocating whole wheat (as I have been, staunchly) and white bread is so demonised, I’ve been worrying that eating it will cause weight gain regardless of how MUCH I’m eating. Is it true that a “calorie is a calorie”? And that if I start eating white bread and some refined grains, in moderation, it won’t necessarily cause weight gain and health problems, as long as I’m still balancing calorie intake?

Sorry for the huge question! I am going to make an appointment to see a RD here in New Zealand shortly, but any advice or info would be received with huge appreciation.

    Heather ,

    sara.jane,
Thanks! I posted a photo of the pita bread package on Sunday night, I believe.

    andrea,
    Lol – thanks!

    Laura ,
White flour is not evil, it’s just not as good or natural as whole wheat bread. Really the only thing you’d be missing out on by eating refined bread is the fiber, so if you’ve been put on a low-fiber diet, then it seems like an appropriate time to eat refined foods. You are still getting the vitamins since most white bread is fortified. I would check with your doctor though, to see if that’s the only remedy, because you’d hate to have to miss out on WW products forever. And there may be something synergistic about eating foods in their unrefined state that we have yet to discover. Don’t worry about gaining weight – just be sure to eat it in moderation per usual and try to make an effort to have refined grains with fat and protein to balance the absorption of the CHO into your bloodstream.
