Curtain Call

Foodblog-3957

Before we get to the mac daddy of all burgers, a word on our new curtains!!

Foodblog-3937

I decided not to get curtains for the living room for multiple reasons: a more modern feel, the fact that we already had a pair of fancy Pottery Barn green curtains and I didn’t know what would match, the position of the couch, the cost, the fact that we don’t use this room very much.

But in a year of living here, I know that at night when it’s dark, everyone on our street can see right in. Not really a big deal since we don’t hang out in this room at night, but when I walk from my bedroom to the kitchen in the middle of the night, people can technically see in. And in the winter, the dining room is more visible too. My mind began to crank about coming out here from the nursery to nurse in the comfy chairs at night and I realized we needed to do something about the windows.

Privacy was a must!

An outdated before photo:

IMG_9494Blog this !

We went to Bed, Bath and Beyond on Sunday to look for options. I was actually planning to sew curtains, and I knew I wanted white because not many other options would have matched our existing green ones.  I also wanted minimal color/pattern to keep the room as open/airy as possible.

Foodblog-3934

BB&B was a disaster. I didn’t like any of the fabrics or colors and nearly all of the curtains were $40 and not the right length. I knew with my sewing machine I could hem them, but I hated to spend $40 on one panel and chop it in half!

SEW, I figured I was going to have to sew them to fit

Until I did a quick search at Amazon and found these Silk-like curtains for $8.96 each. I’m not sure I could have bought fabric that cheap! Also, LOVE grommets!!

Foodblog-3929

We did some measuring and found this stately rod on Amazon too. Having had a double-wide rod in our old house, I knew they had a tendency to bend in the middle, so the reviews on this one put it in my shopping cart – I knew it would be big and sturdy. It actually turned out to be much bigger of a rod than I had imagined, but I kind of like the weight it gives to the room.

Foodblog-3930Foodblog-3931

And the result – curtains that work right over the couch!!

Foodblog-3928

Matt and I did a test last night and despite not being lined, you can’t see a thing from the street – even with all the lights on.

Foodblog-3932

Mission accomplished. And despite the fact that I often prefer windows without treatments, I’m really liking the formality they add to the room. And the coziness at night!

Foodblog-3936

So about that burger…

Foodblog-3967

Karen brought over all of her leftovers from Tuesday’s party for dinner. We had burgers with Seaside Cheddar and Cheddar Garlic buns – plus condiments. This was perhaps the best burger I’ve had all summer!

Foodblog-3965

Because of the bun. And the cheese. Totally.

Foodblog-3961

On the side we broiled strips of zucchini that one of our employees accidentally sliced thinking it was a cucumber at the bakery : ) Loved eating it this way!

Foodblog-3959

Red Zinger Tea on the side!

Foodblog-3970

Poor Matt is so tired because I kept him up last night with all my flipping and flopping, so tonight I’m going to test out the bed in the nursery and let him get a solid night’s sleep at the same time. It makes sense to sleep in the nursery bed at least once before we bring the little one home!

Did you hang the curtains on both windows? In the outdated photo it looks like you have green curtains on the second/other window.

Privacy is good! Just to clarify, do you have two different sets of curtains (and rods) in the same room, or did you also do the same white curtains on the other window? I like the airiness of of the white, but think you should have done the same style and length of treatment on both windows. I guess I read too many decor blogs!

BB&B is crazy expensive!! And I’ve had to take numerous panels back because when I got them home one was an inch shorter than the other. The house we are in the process of buying has tons of windows that will need curtains and I honestly have not thought about where I will find them. I’m hesitant to buy online just because it’s so hard to truly see the color. Unless of course you go with white ;). Room looks great!
