Crave What You Eat

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve wanted to title a post “Eat What You Crave.” Because I do that a lot!

this !

IMG_1318 (1024x768)

I ventured out this morning to head to the gym – and actually had a great workout. I was a chicken and drove instead of biked (hello, 22*) but considering the husband was biking 5 miles to the bakery in 18* in the dark at 4 this morning, I sure seem like a wimp! I had tons of energy today and did 26 mins each on the ET and Stepmill, followed by a round of upper body lifting (biceps, shoulders, deltoids, triceps, chest, some abs). Watching myself in the mirror, I can see that my arms are undoubtedly more toned from 2 months of regular yoga (mostly in the triceps and shoulders from all the down dogs!)

So on to the food that I was craving when I came down to make lunch at 12:30. I didn’t want a sandwich. Or hummus. Or tofu. Or anything cold. Or soup. Or yogurt. I almost made an egg to have over spinach, but then I thought about making salmon salad and bingo!

IMG_1310 (1024x768)

I did a variation of my traditional red curry salmon salad. Today I mixed half of this can of salmon (from Costco) with the following:

  • 2-3 tsp Guilden’s Zesty mustard
  • 1/2 tbsp mayonnaise
  • 1/2 tsp red curry powder (ran out!)
  • 1/2 tsp yellow curry powder
  • Sprinkle cayenne
  • Sprinkle Old Bay
  • Pinch kosher salt

IMG_1312 (1024x768)

Then for the crunch, I sauteed a bunch of veggies

  • 3 broccoli trees
  • 3 giant button mushrooms
  • 1/2 a carrot, minced
  • 3 little peppers, minced
  • A handful of grape tomatoes

IMG_1311 (1024x768)

Last but not least, I reheated some leftover quinoa and sprinkled it with some walnuts and Old Bay with a pile of feta in the middle.

Kelsey and I decided to wait out the roads for our afternoon/evening classes. She’ll be here in an hour to pick me up

I like “crave what you eat” — I’ve noticed my cravings change over time as I’ve cut out most processed food. I guess the repetition of wholesome food just gets your taste buds used to it. It’s awesome!

Looks yummy! I love canned salmon, especially since incorporating fish is so important, and fresh fish is so darn expensive! I like to make salmon patties too which are really good.

don’t feel bad about not biking – it’s actually a little dangerous when the temperature is below freezing, especially if you’re not a very experienced cyclist and your tires are not great.

I have a quick question, and I hope it’s not rude or anything (feel free to ignore me if that’s the case) but I know you used to count, and post, calories. How do you go about that now? Do you do a quick count in your head, or just go by hunger, or what?

I know different things work for different people, and I’m just curious as to your methods.

    AshleyH ,
    Thanks so much 🙂

    Pottery Barn – wedding dishes!

    stacy ,
Usually just cooking spray and some salt. I kept the seasoning neutral so it didn’t interact with the salmon.

    Lisa ,
    I found these at Costco.

    Maria ,
I don’t really count anymore except on occasion when I’m eating something unusual or am out of my routine. My meals have become so normalized that I can generally plan about 500 calories per meal based on food groups.

    K,
    26!!! SCORE!!

Oh, you should totally get sockeye salmon instead of pink. It’s more expensive, but awesome! I’m a bit of a salmon snob though, living on the west coast and all.
