Broth + Bread

Do you guys go through weeks of the month when you’re just not hungry? I totally do. I think it’s part of being female. Some weeks I am ravenous and other weeks my usual meals leave me uncomfortably stuffed. I was expected to get hungry soon after my lighter lunch today and really didn’t! I had an Amazing Grass bar at 5PM and at 8 still wasn’t really hungry. It always catches me off guard.

Here are my packed snacks for the afternoon + evening of classes –

Amazing Grass Peanut Butter bar (which Jenna gave me!), persimmon, Frog Hollow Farm peaches and a few almonds. I ate a few peaches and the bar at 5PM and that was it. The bar was great. The Amazing Grass bars are all surprisingly good and not that grassy at all (compared to taking a shot of the juice!) These dried peaches are really growing on me too!

I came home to find the kitchen upturned from a session of beer bottling and chicken broth making.

IMG_9146 (640x427) IMG_9147 (640x427)

The happy brewer

IMG_9148 (640x427)

He just brewed a batch of a Moose Drool look-alike and was bottling it tonight. WOW – I had a few sips of the non-carbonated sample and it is pretty darn close to the real Montana Moose Drool that we loved so much on our trip.

IMG_9151 (640x427)

The chicken stock was made with celery, carrots, herbs and a bunch of chicken stuff from our most recent whole chicken bake. I had planned to have leftovers for dinner, but Matt announced he was having broth and bread for dinner. How appropriate for him 😉

IMG_9152 (640x427)

After peeking into this bag and finding a HUGE hunk of sourdough, I decided I wanted broth and bread too!

IMG_9154 (640x427)

But when contemplating the broth, I had the idea to stir in an egg and make egg drop soup! I’ve always wanted to make it from scratch. I didn’t have time to research, so I just whisked an egg in a ramekin and slowly drizzled into the hot broth in a pot while stirred. MAGIC!

IMG_9157 (640x427)

IMG_9165 (640x427)

I actually ended up sharing the bowl with Matt, who was too busy cleaning to make a bowl and I wasn’t too hungry.

IMG_9163 (640x427)

But I did manage to eat all of my bread! It was as good as I imagined and I had a nice doughy sour hunk!

IMG_9160 (640x427)

IMG_9158 (640x427)

Probably going to start my tumor research now, but won’t be staying up as late tonight! Tomorrow will be spent writing all day since I have the night off from class.

Nite!

Those Amazing Grass peanut butter-flavored bars are great because they’re high in protein — something many raw/”green” foods lack! And I’m not really a bread person, but that hunk of dough looks great.

I’ve never had egg drop soup, it looks so different than what I imaged it to be. I though it was an egg litterally dropped into the soup and cooked that way. But it’s not. Interesting. It looks like noodles. I am fascinated with this for some reason!

Hey Kath! Sorry if you get this comment twice, but I wanted to tell you about hormonology.info. It’s a website that talks about our cycles and how it affects our spending habits, moods, eating habits, etc. It turns out that during weeks one and two of our cycles, due to rising estrogen, we’re less hungry. It’s during the next two weeks that the cravings increase! Just thought I’d share. 😀

    Hi Kath!

This is the first time I’m posting on your blog although I’ve been a huge follower for quite a while now. (hope that doesn’t make me a stalker. hmm…) Your stories are always so inspirational and cheery. I especially love all your fresh and creative ways to spice up your meals – every dish looks gourmet in my eyes! haha. Following you blog as really made me value my body and pushed me to live a healthier, happier life. Oh, and not to mention productive! I still can’t believe you managed to complete an entire paper in TWO days! Ack! And here I am still struggling with mine, weeks after I began it, with the deadline looming over my (sleepy) head tomorrow. hmm.

Ok, on to the reason I finally decided to get off my lazy bum and post a comment: I noticed you made egg drop soup! 😀 I’m something of an egg drop soup fanatic (mainly because it was the first dish I perfected) so please excuse my excitability over this simple dish. For your first time, I’m so impressed by the quality of your egg ribbons! Very light, long and silky looking – the marks of a true chef 😉 But I hope you won’t mind if I give you a little advice? The trick I found to getting the perfect ribbon effect is to pour in the beaten egg AFTER you turn off the heat, then slowly stir in a figure eight. Eggs are very delicate and too much heat will curdle and toughen it in the soup. This way, one egg is enough to fill up an entire pot. To help with the fluffiness and silken texture of the soup, the traditional Chinese recipe calls for the use of tapioca flour (found in Asian supermarkets) but starch can be substituted. Typically, I like to dissolve the tapioca flour in a little bit of cold water first (not warm, or you’ll make tapioca jelly), pour the mixture into the soup before turning off the heat. However, as I’ve began eating healthier, I’ve been doing without the thickener. I like to add seared scallops and chopped green onions to mine 🙂

G’luck with your second paper! happy writing :]

    Fei Fei,
I did just remove the soup from the heat, so maybe that’s why I had such good luck!? And mine didn’t taste quite as good as the pros, so maybe that was my lack of starch? Thanks for the tips!

    Jessica,

    Shelley,
We’ll be back to MT and you know beer will be involved 😉

    Holly,

Another version I like to make is with miso. Just take water, add miso and scallions, heat up, and then do the egg thing. It’s good and comforting if you aren’t that hungry or have a tummy ache.
