Body Builder

So glad to have Body Pump back in my life : ) I really can’t even describe the effect the class has had on me. I’ve been doing group exercise on and off for years and have never enjoyed going to a class as much as this.

Do you know what I think the reason really is? The results. I really see them. My arms aren’t really any smaller – in fact, I think they’re bigger! But I definitely have muscles I never used to have and I can link 2x a week pumping directly to that.

I showered at the gym and biked my merry way down to the bakery –

IMG_1453 (640x427)

It is a minor problem to arrive at a bakery that you own hungry from a hard workout. I tasted two quality control things – a Cheddar Garlic knot and a batch of scuffins that had a funky shape today (and we unfortunately couldn’t sell but will donate)

IMG_1452 (640x427)

Now that dessert was taken care of, I ate lunch!

IMG_1446 (640x427)

Last night’s salad base (making lunch while making dinner is an old secret of mine from my full-time employment days!) topped with the last of our leftover salmon, blue cheese and some cheddar cubes Matt had just cut up here at work and I dropped on top.

IMG_1445 (640x427)IMG_1448 (640x427)

I was going to have this nectarine too, but Laurel convinced me that the rotten bottom and fruit fly presence in my home kitchen was not something I should eat, so I tossed it : (

Just finished up a conference call with GH and the rain is now coming down. Sadness!

Happy Weekend!!

It’s great to find workouts that you love! I’ve never tried body pump. I also do the prepare lunch while preparing dinner trick. It really saves time. I just put leftovers directly into a container that I would take for lunch. It must be a rough job having to taste all those things for quality control purposes! 🙂 If you ever need any help with that, I volunter. 🙂

There’s a window WAY ACROSS from my desk (across the hall and clear into the other office suite) and it looked dreary but I couldn’t tell if it was raining.

I am getting out an hour early today though so rain or not…wheee! happy weekend to you too, Kath!!!

    Hi Kath!
I am a body pump newbie and I am loving it!
I was soooo sore after the first class, so I have been keep the weight low for the first few weeks. I was wondering how much weight you normally use in the class? I need a goal since I am outta shape and all! haha

Well I use a different weight for every muscle.

I do 1 large, 1 medium and 1 small for squats (mostly because I have lower back issues and don’t want to press it – I square more on machines)

1 large, 1 small for chest (sometimes I use 1 large 1 medium!)

1 large, 1 med for back

1 large, 1 small for tris

      1 large for biceps

2 10 pound handweights for lunges (I hate the bar on the back!!)

And a mix of mediums and small frees for shoulders

      Hope that helps!

Make sure the bar is on the ‘meaty part’ of the back! It should be nowhere near the shoulders, actually. It also helps to make sure your elbows are right under the bar, instead of sticking out toward the front or back of the room.

I teach BodyPUMP and so I see this mistake a lot! I promise it helps 🙂

And yah, keep going and you will see results, good changes, and a lot more strength!

I’ve been doing bodypump consistently now for 2 times a week for 3 weeks and it’s because you recommended it. It has changed my workouts and I feel amazingly strong! I’ve been noticing results and am feeling so much stronger!

The track I dislike the most- lunges UGH they KILL me ( I’m not a big runner so my legs are not super strong) and I feel so wobbly when I do them.

Thanks Kath! Keep rocking the workouts

    Hey Kath!

You’ve been talking about body pump mucho lately and I was just wondering what your estimated calorie burn would be for a given class? I like to keep a big variety on the classes I take (one kick boxing, one weight lifting, one Zumba class a week with LOTS of yoga) and I wanted to compare calorie output. Thanks! Have a great weekend!

I have no idea. One reason I used to shy away from weight classes is because I wore a heart rate monitor and didn’t burn very many calories. You really have to look at it as another kind of exercise. I imagine my calorie burn during class is pretty low. I barely sweat and never get out of breath (maybe 1 or 2 times during class on a hard muscle) but AFTERWARDS I think is where all the benefit is. I definitely think my metabolism is faster!!

It totally depends on the amount of weight you lift, how in shape you are, your body weight, and how challenging the class is for you.

When I was trained in BodyPUMP the presenter of Les Mills told us the average caloric burn is 400-700 calories per hour with an obvious increased caloric burn after the class (the other 23 hours of the day)! As an instructor (and having checked it out) I burn around 560 calories in the class and am always a sweaty mess at the end. Hope this helps 🙂

I would never believe Les’s stats – I also only burned about 150 in Zumba and that class is touted to burn 600+! (And I was moving pretty hard!) I have a really conservative approach to calorie burn in exercise, but I do agree that body shape + fitness can vary it greatly.

I weigh 135 lb and do fairly hardcore pump (a bit more weight than Kath). My monitor showed about 250 cal burned per 45 min class. Obviously, muscle work is not done for *immediate* calorie burn effect…

Ick ick ick! You are much more open-minded about your fruit than I am…I know it’s wasteful, but if the fruit isn’t in its prime (e.g. a little mushy, bad spots, etc.), I have a hard time eating it. Glad someone talked you out of this one, haha. Although mushy fruit is great for oatmeal, yog bowls and smoothies! 🙂

    Hi Kath,

Does Cville have a composting system or do you think you will ever start composting veggie and fruit scraps from the bakery and having nearby community gardens use the compost? I know the coordination to manage waste is a lot of work but I think it would be really cool to incorporate into your business later! 🙂

    That salad sounds delicious!
I did the body pump thing for a while, but I really prefer heavier weights and 12 reps – max – for each exercise.

Left a shout out to you for Biscoff cookies on my blog today 😀 I thought it was funny that I only ever see them on planes but in my favorite cafe here in Korea, they’re complimentary with the coffee.

I went to GH in Wayne, Pa today….so inspired by your blogging. I told the lady I follow a blog and before I could say anymore, she said “oh yeah, Kath and Matt”. It was kinda funny.( i forgot her name). Im glad it freezes well, because it was a little over an hour from Lancaster, Pa where i live. Oh, and I love Body Pump also.

Reading about your results from taking Body Pump classes is really encouraging. I just started about two weeks ago. I go twice a week along with one spin class a week. I was in much pain after the first week, but feeling okay, now. Question: Do you actually get full off of all those salads? They never seem to fill me up. I recently tried your overnight oats, and I love them. Thanks for the idea!

I’ve never done Body Pump, but I’ve been getting back into doing strength training lately so I really want to give it a try!

It seems like everyone’s doing body pump. I’m thinking I should look into it 🙂 I started kettlebell training a few months ago and love it … for the same reasons you love body pump. RESULTS. Do you always take body pump at the gym? Do you ever do it at home with a DVD?

We have GH that sets up shot at our local farmer’s market… always makes me think of you and Matt. BTW … they have the best peach muffins 🙂

The shelves of bread look delicious! I can only imagine how wonderful your store smells when you walk in the door.

I bet you love the quality control aspect of owning a business 🙂

I’m so excited to get back into Bodypump, too! I used to do it in TX, we didn’t have it at my gym in SF, but we have it at our new gym in LA! SUPER excited to see some results and become stronger! And the salmon salad looks delicious! 🙂

I love body pump but there are no classes around where I live! i have been incorporating strength training in my workouts over the last 2 weeks and can def already feel/see the difference! It really is more about the post-workout burn!

I go to 24 hour fitness and they have body pump. I’ve never tried it but now that I’m home from college, I definitely will. In fact, I’ll be going on Tuesday. I’m pretty strong but I think I’ll be taking it easy for the first class because I have no idea how much weight I need to put on or any of the moves. I don’t like group classes very much, but I slack on weight training so I think this will keep me entertained, plus I’ve heard so many great things about it!

Is Body Pump twice a week as much strength training as you do or do you incorporate things on your own too?

Yes, that’s all I do. It seems to be enough to build some good muscle. Any more often and I don’t think I’d have enough recovery time

I miss pump class so much – your posts make it even worse! I cut gyms out of my life recently as a way to save money, which will only be necessary for a few more months…can’t wait to get back! Yes please don’t eat things you’re sharing with fruit flies!

Morning, Kath. I was just curious- why can’t you sell funky shaped scuffins? I would think it would add to the “home-made” feeling that Great Harvest gives. 🙂

I always pack lunch while making dinner. In fact, I plan my meals for 4 servings, so the husband and I always have the leftover for the next day. Makes it so easy, and more economical!
