Big Wheels Keep On Turnin’

How many songs can I relate to biking?! I was all over this morning – to the bike shop (unsuccessful with my part), to Lowes, to the Y (for a quick weight lifting session and 10 minutes on the ET to watch the end of House Hunters), and then home. I was on the go for almost 2 hours, although some of that was in the stores. But it sure was fun.

By the time I got home I was ready for a big lunch….too big!!

I started with a big salad – mostly romaine + spinach on the bottom with some carrot peels, bell peppers, avocado + blueberries.

On the side I had a defrosted English muffin with a very thin layer of PB and J

DSC02384

A few leftover edamame

And a fantastic peach in some Fage –

DSC02381

I should have saved the peach/Fage to have later, but I wanted to keep eating so I did.

I’ve gotten so many great haiku entries already!!! Keep ’em comin’. I won’t have time to respond to each submission by email but I’m still reading and admiring each one 🙂

Off to run my errands and have dinner out. Home late tonight!

    Cute new pic! Very sporty.

So does that salad have any dressing on it? I’ve tried eating “naked” salads but I just can’t do it.

    Heather,
Yes, sorry I forgot to mention it! I used a homemade dressing Karen brought over. It was a lemon juice/EVOO blend. I used about 1 tsp and tossed the lettuce well before adding the veggies.

What do you do with your bike when you go into a store? I want to ride my bike places, but I’m nervous that someone will take it!

Is is one entry per person for the haiku contest? Sorry to re-ask … I think my question got lost in the last post! Thanks.

    Kelley,

You gotta get a bike lock! We both have the kind that’s a long, thick, metal cord with a 4-number combination lock. I like these the best because you can coil them up on your bike when you’re riding, and they’re long enough to fit around just about any stationary object. It’s impossible NOT to find something to lock your bike to when there’s no bike rack: a tree, a column, signpost, grocery cart corral, bench, etc.

I never leave my bike unlocked anywhere. The question for me is how secure do I want to lock it? If I’m only going in a store for a few mins, I’ll just loop it through once. If I’m locking it overnight or for a long time, I’ll put the chain through both wheels and the frame of the bike. You should get one from Lowe’s or a bike store – shouldn’t cost more than $15.

    Carrie,

Yeah, it’s gotta be one entry per person because otherwise the judging would take weeks! So make ’em extra creative!

All right everybody…some MENU HELP!!! We are going here tonight: www.aristosgreekrestaurant.com
Please weigh in with your choices, but keep in mind that I don’t eat “white” carbs…ie: white rice, white pita, etc.

hey kath, what kind of spoon/fork is that? i was trying to figure out what was on it… sounds like you’re having a fun day!

oooh twinks it looks so good! i would do the shrimp kabobs or lemon pepper salmon, with extra veggies instead of rice, or a greek salad with no cheese and grilled chicken with dressing on the side.
    have fun!!!

I personally don’t think the coil and 4 number combo bike lock is sufficient. My bike was stolen last summer and a guy at the bike shop asked me what kind of lock I had on it…it was a coil. He wasn’t suprise and told me people cut those all the time. So when I purchased my next bike I sprung for a U shape lock, and while it’s heavy and sometimes a hassle…I’ve had my bike for 2 summers now. Hopefully this doesn’t happen to anyone else. I don’t like people who steal bikes!

    Hi Kath!
This question is a little silly, but i recently moved out of my house into my own apartment and in an effort to keep foods like, english muffins lets say, from going to waste I’ve been freezing half or so. My question is how do you defrost yours so they don’t taste like the freezer? Do you just stick them in the toaster frozen or do you let them come to room temperature first and then toast? I’ve had this dilemma with muffins as well, trying to decide the best method. Anyways, I love your blog, you keep me inspired everyday! Thanks!!

    Grocery Store High!!!!

Chobani is here!!!!! Chobani is here!!!

I went to the grocery store today and was super excited to buy tons of fresh veggies for salads and yogurt- I was intending to get Fage … but I found Chobani arrived in North Carolina AND it was on sale!!! $1/ yogurt… EVEN BETTER THAN FAGE!!! The fruit kinds have a little fruit actually in them (tastes more like jam) but they also have a plain that is 100 calories and all protein!

    Hooray!

    kelley–

i would just like to add to matt’s post that the sort of lock you get really depends on where you live. i live between new york city and boston, if had a cable lock, it would have been cut through veryyy long ago. i actually spent about $90 on my lock and its an iron U kryptonite lock. this is actually what both the nypd and bpd recommend as its basically impossible to break through. if you live in a major city or a high-crime area, it is imperative that you spend a bit more money to get a quality lock, you won’t regret it.

B_Hlthy, I LOVE LOVE LOVE Chobani yogurt! My grocery store started carrying it a few weeks ago. I agree, better than Fage.

Kath, that English muffin looks yummy. I like to top waffles, bagels, English muffins, etc. with PB and jam or honey.

    fitnessista,
It’s a small spoon (baby size) with Duke Chapel on the end!

    caroline ,
I usually microwave them until they are not frozen and then toast in a toaster. Or keep microwaving until hot. Or put in the oven. You just can’t eat it cold! The Ezekiel products freeze well, but fluffier types of bread go hard on me.

    B+Hlthy,
    WHICH GROCERY STORE!?!??!?!!?

Their website has been saying “Coming Soon to Harris Teeter” for ages so I’ve been keeping an eye out. Hope you don’t say Whole Foods because we don’t have one!!

u shaped locks are definitely better than coils, but it’s also smart to use two different types of locks. i’ve got a heavy U lock that i use on my frame to lock it to the rack (i leave the lock on the rack at work so i’m not lugging it around all the time) and then have a thick coated 6′ cable with a padlock that goes through both my wheels. the more steps a thief has to go through to get your bike, the more likely they will be to steal someone else’s (isn’t that lovely)
