Best Of Both

I don’t have my morning class today so I’ve got a nice relaxing morning to cozy up with until I have to drive down to Winthrop after lunch. The husband is off baking bread and had all of his clothing – including his ski jacket and mask for the 40 minute bike ride there – all laid out last night. He came to tuck me in goodbye sometime around 3am and put the down blanket on me so I woke up toasty warm this morning!

I set the alarm for 6am and had planned on going straight to the gym, but it was cold and dark and hot tea and oatmeal were calling my name, so I went into reverse workout mode. I do prefer to have breakfast first and workout mid-morning when I have the flexibility to do so, but I also think that eating breakfast after a refreshing workout is a priceless feeling, and that feeling alone is worth the trade in of a slower start most days. But not today!

We had one serving of pre-made steel cut oats left from last week so I heated those up for breakfast. (PSA: Oats do keep over 7 days).

Into the bowl:

  • 1 serving steel-cut/rolled oat blend made with 2% milk
  • 1/4 cup or so of hemp milk for rehydration
  • 1/2 a medium banana
  • Cinnamon
  • Pumpkin butter blob
  • Flax
  • Walnuts
  • Butter Toffee PB

But the Honey Roasted Cinnamon was calling my name “Katttttttttttttth What about me!?!? You forgot to get me! Just a little taste!?”

So I had to go back for a dip into that jar to finish off the rest of my oats.

DSC05287

You know, I have come to the conclusion that I just don’t like steel cut oats! Well, I like them fine, but compared to old fashioned rolled, they just don’t hold a candle. They are dry and have less starchy substance inbetween each oat that lends creaminess to the whole bowl. I feel like I have some obligation to eat them, but I just don’t think I will buy them anymore after we finished off this canister.

I’ve got a Micro test tomorrow, so that’s on the Agenda for today big time. SO much to memorize in 24 hours!

    Good luck with your studying!

As you are the oatmeal guru, I am comforted by your verdit on steel cut oats. I’ve never really liked them and have always stuck to old fashioned rolled oats, which are thankfully cheaper, at least in my experience. I’ve felt guilty about this, since everyone always says how much better steel cut oats taste, how they make the “prefect” bowl of oatmeal, but now I know I’m not alone in how I feel!

hey kath – the recipe on the back of the instabake for biscuits called for 2 cups of bake mix, but i used 1/2 cup and that made 2 biscuits.

I’m so agree with you Kath, steel cuts are just not as good as old fashion oats. They’re less creamy and less volume, so I will finish what I have ASAP and go back to oats.

And the feeling about whether to have workout or have breakfast happens to me all the time. I know what you mean by the greatness of having breakfast after workout, because you did your daily workout and you’re all set to begin the day with tons of energy except the belly, so you enjoy every bites. That feels so good!!! But at winter time, when you wake up without energy, hungry, warm breakfast calls you; and dark, cold outside just shake all your willingness for go our for the workout.
I’m still struggling what’s best strategy, when you figure out, let me know.

    Have a great day~~

Do you think you didn’t like the steel cut because it was reheated? I find that I love steel cut when it’s fresh – but reheated… not so good.

Either way – you are right about regular rolled oats. They are fast and super good.

I really wanted pumpkin oats this morning, but I was running so late that I ended up with shredded wheat. It did NOT hit the spot!

I did end up with a pumpkin latte… this weather just makes me want to hibernate!

I completely agree with you about steel cut oats… I prefer the creaminess of the rolled oats. When you pre-cook your oatmeal how come you don’t just add the banana in then? Do you find that it loses flavor if you cook it in in the beginning?

    Kath,

Have you ever tried Trader Joe’s Steel Cut Oatmeal? It’s frozen and they come in packs of two. I LOVE the rolled oats and now make them every morning (by your inspiration!) but if I’m in a rush, you just stick these in the microwave and go!

    When I pre-cook rolled oats I do.

    Mandy A,
I have no idea about the cooked servings. A dry serving of steel cut is 1/4 cup and this was that cooked.

    Amanda in Pittsburgh,

    so, a belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!

the sleeping picture was taken after a few too many snarfled bites of molten chocolate cake at Koi, plus a blackberry martini…. errr 3 martinis haha

Thanks for the acorn squash demo. I made one last night, and then shut off the oven and left it in there for a minute while I ran upstairs to put on my pjs. I completely forgot about it and it slept there all night. I am so sad! I’ll have to buy another one next week, or this weekend!

I adore steel cut oats, but I think that’s because I prefer oatmeal that has some chew to it. Creamy is all well and good, but I feel much more satisfied when I have to use my teeth at some point on a meal. I gather that you are a creamy oatmeal person, so old-fashioned oats make more sense for you. Chacun a son gout.

But if the issue the reheating, did you know that you can cook steel cut oats in five minutes if you pre-soak them? If you just add the oats and water to a pot the night before, you can just turn on the pot in the morning and they are done in about five minutes.

Does anyone in Canada know where I can get that PB?? the website doesn’t ship to canada, and I’m dying to try it

Does anyone know if Whole Foods carries it?

Also, I’m going to have to side with steel-cut oats, somehow, mine always turn out creamier than my rolled oats.

    ashley ,
I posted the PB brand in yesterday’s post.

And Living Harvest is the best hemp milk around. Wikipedia it for all the details!

    rhodeygirl ,
    Bummer about the squash!!

    Hil ,
Again the best of both worlds: creamy rolled oats with chewy/crunchy mix-ins 🙂

Presoaking would be good, but I think I’m just going to stop trying to like steel cut oats when I love rolled so much. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!
