Beer Bread + Breakfast

Up at 5 this morning – it’s been a while! The husband heard one beep of the alarm and rolled back over. Guess he wasn’t in the mood for a workout!

I actually think it was the slice of beer bread I cut last night that got me out of bed this morning. SO DOUGHY!!! With some almond butter –

dsc07343.JPG

At the gym I climbed stairs for 30 minutes, then finished my magazine on the ET and did some push-ups, planks and abs.

I was running late and the husband already had breakfast underway when I got home, so I had to shower quickly and skip my make-up/hair for after breakfast. Now I am NOT a fussy make-up person – I can usually put on all my basics in about 3 minutes flat: tinted moisturizer, concealer, eye shadow, liner, mascara, and blush. But when I went to brush my teeth after breakfast I was shocked by how different I looked. I really look kind of sickly! I think it’s the eyes. A little shadow (I use Clinique Victorian Pink – kind of a rosy neutral color that I swear by) and a touch of mascara (Neutrogena Weightless Volume) make ALL the difference on me.

What are some of your “can’t live without it” make-up items?

On To Oats

Yum! In our fun coral bowls. Mixed with banana, hemp milk, brown sugar, and vanilla and topped with almonds and PB:

dsc07346.JPG

With a DELICIOUS cup of coffee. I love, love, love this Fresh Market Spring Blend! My workout is my “wake-up” jolt in the morning – I don’t even notice the caffeine in coffee. I drink it purely because I love the rich taste.

dsc07344.JPG

This breakfast was 460 kcal, 10 grams fiber and 19 grams protein.

A few things to do and it’s time to hit the highways and head back to school…

I have really bad bags under my eyes, so if i just have some stick concealer for that and a little mascara, Im good to go. its just takes a lot of work to even out my skin, but I can skip the eyes all together and be ok.
have a good first day back! How far along are you in school? Do you still have a ways to go?

I’m the same way, mascara does wonders to wake up my face a bit. I love burt’s bees chapsticks, and I’m all about Laura Mercier tinted moisterizer. Gives a really nice glow without looking fake and orangey. I never put on eye shadow…kind of scares me and makes me look sleepy, but a nice, light dusting of goldy hues or a light pinkish/taupish sparkle are a nice touch. I’m not partial to any eye shadow brands given that I don’t use it that often, but bobbi brown and trish mcevoy are my 2 FAV. make up brands. Always clean and classy! have a great day back at school, I’m right there with ya!

Kath- What time do you eat breakfast lunch and dinner? I thought on a previous post you listed this all out but I can’t find it. I was just curious as to what times you typically ate. I know it all varies on hunger level and by person but i also know you are on a schedule with school in all.

    Kelly T,
This is my first semester (well, second if you could the evening course I took last fall) so I have a long ways to go! I’ll finish my coursework in the fall of 2009 and will do a 6-month intensive internship Spring of 2010. Then I can sit for the R.D. exam and being practicing – but I’ll still have 3 more courses for my masters after that. Good thing I like learning – and nutrition!

    KellyL,
It depends on the day, but breakfast is usually at 7, lunch at 12, snack at 4 and dinner at 7-7:30. On the weekends I might have breakfast at 9 or 10 (after an AM workout) lunch at 2 and dinner at 7. Hope that helps!

Kath (or anyone else who has made the chickpea cutlets) – the recipe calls for “cooked” chickpeas. If I’m using canned, aren’t they already cooked? I feel like this is a ridiculous question and that I should know the answer.

Kath, I have seen you talk about Land’s End before, and I had a quick question. I have never worn their clothes but was looking around and found a few things to order! However, according to their size chart I should order a couple sizes smaller than my normal size. Do they run big? Do you need a smaller size? Ordering online always makes me nervous, and ordering a smaller size makes it worse. Thanks!

    oh wow.

I love fashion + beauty. It is my passion.

I am studying consumer science with specialisation in clothing management ( major fashion merchandising/marketing)…so I LOVE THIS QUESTION!

I am also a 5 minute girl and don’t really wear eye shadow but growing up dancing & performing I’ve always loved make-up!

Here are some of my all-time favorites that I swear by:

You must try them 🙂 You will NOT be disappointed.

-Cetaphil face wash ( swear by it )
-Bonne Bell DR. PEPPER lip balm ( you might feel like a teen with this one, but it gives you the “perfect pout” + the right amount of moisture )
    -MAC concealer ( lasts FOREVER)
-MAC cream blush in Blossoming…most natural colour out there.
-MAC mineralize ( PERFECT finish. your skin will thank you)
-MAC strobe cream… you will have the most luminous skin. promise.
-DIOR Blackout mascara or Covergirl LASH EXACT
-Bobbi Brown SPF 15 tinted moisturizer ( this is ALL you need. no foundation. no powder…just this + SPF is a must. everyday.)
-Benefit lip gloss in NO PEEKING- the most perfect shade of pink. (perfect for spring time!)

I could name heaps more, but just thought I would add my all-time favs.

(ps. let me know if you have any questions about any of these products 😉 )

    Have a wonderful Monday.

Since switching to all organic/natural makeup, it has been a huge project just to find the basics! I don’t wear any makeup in the summer except for mascara usually. In the winter, to even out, I just found Pur Minerals powder foundation and I really like it. I just dust that all over, maybe add bronzer or blush, and then Pur Minerals mascara and I am done! It takes about 1.5 minutes.

    Re. Make-up,
Love all the cosmetic talk! I forgot to mention that I LOVE Kohl’s Flirt Lip Gloss in Zippy Ginger. I have tried TONS of glosses and they are all too tacky or come off too quickly. I love this one – it’s the perfect consistency. Bev,
I use the Neutrogena Healthy Skin Enhancer and LOVE it (http://www.neutrogena.com/CosmeticsDetails_287.asp?lProductLineID=4) It has SPF too (although I wear a full-spec sunscreen daily too – Aveeno for face)

I also love the Weightless Volume Mascara – I have yet to find another that feathers my lashes so well.

    Marcy,
I’m a big fan of Burt’s Bees for chapstick.

And “roast” means in the oven at high temp – usually 400* or so. We roast on a cookie sheet or a metal baking pan.

    Nate ,
    Glad you stuck around!!

    Bev,
Re. nut butters. It just depends on the brand. Our HT PB is kind of creamy, the almond butter is REALLY runny (that’s probably what you see all the time) and the EarthFare PB is much drier.

    KatieMoo,
Woman’s World had put out a request for weight loss stories so I sent in mine with some photos. Then I got a call that they wanted me to fly to NYC for the covershoot. I really thought it was a scam until they send me flight info and all the details. I asked if the husband could come too (why not just ask!?) and they said yes! It was an amazing 24 hours trip – even if my cover did make me look like a Vegas Showgirl 🙂

    Megan ,
Glad you’re having fun in the archives! Sometimes I look through them myself for ideas and it’s like reading someone else’s blog it’s been so long! We use Harris Teeter Brand Grade A Real Maple Syrup.

    Lesli ,
I use the Neutrogena HSE too! Love the smell 🙂

I love Land’s End’s stuff. I have a few fleeces, vests, no-iron shirts. LOVE the spandex stuff. I think their sizes run big. You can chat with customer service if you have questions – I’ve done that and it was helpful. I wear a 2 petite at most stores, and since LE just debuted the size 2 I was thrilled. Both of my pairs fit OK when they arrived, but after a few days of wearing they were too big. I’m debating if I should return them or not. But the good thing is, if you live near a Sears returns are SUPER easy and free. And you can order from Sears stores on their computers and get free shipping too – so if you have one, it’s worth the trip. Oh, and I love LE’s shoes too!!

    fashionista ,
Thanks for all the recs! I’m writing them down…

    Katers ,
Haha – you should have bought both! I think it’s funny that you guys discuss the blog with your boyfriends/husbands. I definitely do the same with mine “So and so made this meal today I want to try” 🙂

Kath – off topic, but I have this funny story that I thought you’d get a kick out of.

I was at WF last night with my bf, and we were at the frozen fruit section. I grabbed some mixed berries, and told my bf I wanted to get another bag, but a different kind. He grabbed a bag of blackberries and threw it in the cart, saying ‘I love blackberries.’ At the same time I spotted some frozen mango and said aloud ‘oh, Kath had frozen mango the other morning’ My bf immediately grabbed the blackberries out of the cart and threw the mangos in, looking so proud of himself the whole time! I laughed and said, ‘no, no, let’s get the blackberries – I’m living with you, not Kath!’ Hahaha. He knows how much I love your blog. He asks me every night, ‘So what’d Kath eat today?’ so cute. 😀

I don’t wear makeup, and no I’m not a boy. Just wanted to throw out there that some of us go au natural on a daily basis & love it.

    GreenTea-
I totally said that “I have a friend who went to Davidson” too! My boyfriend said, “Who are you talking about? I know all your friends” and then… I felt like a creep…

Does anyone have any suggestions for moisterizing eye cream. My under the eye area is super dry and I can not find anything that works well.

Jade – me too – I wear makeup maybe once or twice a month. I like the way I look with it, but hate the way it feels! I just prefer to feel more natural. I do ALWAYS use Vaseline on my lips. And Kiala, I also use Purpose face wash (have since high school) and the same Oil of Olay moisturizer.

Don’t have time for makeup in the morning. I did rather get in 15 mins of sleep :). Also helps that I am a brunette with light honey skin tone so my features are defined. And the fact that I cannot do great makeup like many others.
Generally out with a little SPF moisturizer (Clinique) and some lip gloss.

Makeup!! I’m real late in posting but this is a fun one 🙂 I’ve always thought my best feature was my eyes/eyelashes so I automatically thought “mascara” in response to Kath’s question…however, I recently realized that I can look fine without makeup on my eyes, but in order to not look sickly/dead (esp. because I am really pale!) I need to do my face makeup…nothing complicated, just dab some concealer here and there, swipe some Cover Girl powder foundation around, and finish with a little peach blush.

    PS-
    GreenTea–funny story!
NCCarter–I made the chickpea cutlets using canned chickpeas too…the ones in the can are cooked.

Caitlin – you do? Isn’t that funny?

Jennifer – I am telling you, Khiels eye cream with avocado is the BEST. It’s only 24 dollars too, which is pretty good considering most eye creams cost like a billion dollars.

I can’t decide between concealer and mascara…my eyes are small and I always have dark circles under them so it’s a tough call.
