Bare Naked

OK, I can’t believe I am posting a photo of me without make-up on the Internet, but you guys asked for a bareMinerals before and after. I’m not a make-up fanatic; I normally just wear enough to hide my flaws, but I rarely go out of the house without anything on – like in this photo – so it’s kind of scary!

So without further ado….

Before

DSC02304

After

I am wearing all the components of the bareMinerals Start-Up Kit along with the bare Escentuals classic mascara (I fell in love with the brush). Plus Clinque Victorian Pink eyeshadow (couldn’t live without it!) and Clinque Gingerfrost lipstick (light raspberry and natural).

DSC02311

After wearing bareMinerals for over a week now, I still love it! Thanks to all of you who recommended it

 this !

Workout

I decided to do another outdoorsy trip to the Y on foot. I walked there (nice in the shade) and home (too hot in the sun!) and did 20 minutes on the ET and pull-ups and dips while I was there. There are pros and cons to going on foot:

Pros:

  • Environment
  • Not getting my car sweaty
  • Gas money saved
  • Pretty scenery/good for the mind
  • More low impact exercise
  • Environment

Cons:

  • Too much sun exposure
  • The cost of sunscreen!!
  • Time
  • Too much walking on my hurt foot?

But I’d say while the weather is nice and while I have the time, do it!

Lunch

Now on to food!!

For lunch I whipped up another mystery recipe: a chilled green soup! It was good – not gaggy like my last attempt at this recipe a few weeks ago.

DSC02315

Plus I made a salad –

  • Spinach
  • Carrot
  • Cauliflower
  • Green pepper
  • Wheatberry sprinkle
  • Almond sprinkle
  • Berry sprinkle
  • Annie’s Raspberry dressing, which I liked a lot less today 🙁

DSC02313

And kashis on the side –

DSC02316

Yum!

DSC02317

I have a few errands to do and dinner is still TBD.

Hasta la vista!

i’ve been using BM for almost 2 years and really love it… though i haven’t really noticed a difference in my skin, per ce, i like how it feels (esp. in the summer)… i bought my starter-kit from QVC and since then – i have bought everything else on ebay (you can save a LOT of money this way)… :o)

    Well Kath,

first off you look great in the before shot, but I love that BM just sort of accentuates your features and softens them. I love BM and the natural look it gives . . . I think it makes women look more warm and alive (as opposed to the zombie look I have sans make-up) =)

That soup look so creamy and rich!!!

What a great idea to post the before and after. You look great in BOTH photos!

I also use Bare Minerals and love the way they make the skin look so natural. It’s perfect for highlighting certain features without making you look overdone – makeup like that is the only kind I’d wear. You look great, Kath! Hope you enjoy the product!

PS: I also get itchy while wearing Bare Minerals when I get hot, but I thought it was just my skin. Any idea what this is from, Christie? Kath, you’ll have to let us know what happens for you.

Psh…Kath, you don’t even need the makup!

I’m tempted to buy the BareMinerals stuff, but everyone says it makes them itch when they’re hot. Living in Houston, I think I’d be itching ALL the time! Especially considering I walk to/from work in the heat…
Has anyone tried any of the mineral makeup (maybe another brand?) that isn’t itchy??

    Hey Kath,

I actually think you look quite pretty without makeup. The bare minerals do look great, but you have a very natural glow from your healthy lifestyle. Keep it up!

My question is a little personal, but maybe there are others who have struggled with this as well. I’m wondering if anyone has tips for getting back on track after several days (ok…close to a week!) Of very unhealthy overeating. I have a problem in that I tend to use food for comfort when I am stressed, but I just end up feeling so horrible afterwards. I normally aim to eat healthy (I am a vegetarian) but sometimes I feel if I make one mistake it’s all over until I can make myself get back on the wagon. It’s so discouraging! I know that you couldn’t possibly offer me detailed advice on a blog Kath, but I’m just wondering if through your weight loss struggles, you ever hit a roadblock like this. I just feel awful and I’m in a wedding in three months! I need to slim down to fit in my dress and I need some hardcore motivation! Thanks!

kelly, i know you directed your question towards kath, but i wanted to give you some advice, too. whenever i start to slide down into unhealthy eating (ie reaching for the second helping i dont need, mindlessly eating out of the box) i have to REMOVE myself from the situation. first, i verbalize (outloud if no one is around LOL) something like ‘STOP! you are engaging in a horrible pattern!’. then, i walk outside for a little bit or wipe down my bathroom counters, whatever… anything to re-focus myself. the sooner i consciously stop the behavior, the better!

Right now, I think i need help with sticking to my goals and getting back on track. I almost feel that I gained back all of the 10lbs I lost in the past week!

Jwing have any of yall pulled a muscle like very lower back/upper butt part??

I didn’t notice it until after I took a step class yesterday and it started out very small like a slight pull and as it got later in the day and after weight class it really hurts now even to walk! It sucks because I don’t take my off day until a few days later usually and am a highly active person and really wanted to run today or something but don’t want to make it any worse!

If any of yall had this sharp pull/pain in that area did you just take time off? I feel like it needs a good stretch but it’s at an odd place to find a good stretch for it!

    Hey Kellyinthecity26,

I hear ya! I, too, have had a really bad eating week. I am a stress eater too, but also, and I don’t know if anyone else ever experiences this, I feel like I am being sabotaged sometimes by those around me. I’ve worked so hard to lose this weight. I exercise most days of the week and I feel great. So, consequently, my partner will try to get me to eat things that I really don’t want or need because he feels that it won’t “hurt” me. And me, having no willpower when it comes to things like brownies, cake or midnight runs to Wendy’s (his idea), will succumb to the temptation. It’s not that he’s trying to hurt me, he just thinks since I’m at a good weight, exercising, etc., it won’t “hurt” if I indulge a little. I agree that indulging a “little” won’t hurt, but if I indulge every day, then I’ll be right back where I started in no time. It gets really frustrating. Plus, when we first met years ago, he was in better shape than I was and we went on lots of hikes, bike rides, long walks, scooter rides, etc. Now it’s like we’ve switched and he’s the dessert hound. Even as I’m writing this, he’s taking a nap because he had such a “hard” day at work. I’ve had a much longer day than he has and I got a good workout in to boot. (I’m resisting the urge to throw something at him. It’s making me mad the more I think about it.) Do any of you ever feel sabotaged? I know I need to be stronger and just say no, but sometimes it’s really hard. Especially when he’s heating up an apple strudel at midnight and the smell is driving me insane.

    Hi Laurenq,

I haven’t had that problem but my husband had that! He started getting sharp pains on his lower back, but just on one side…he went to the chiropractor once a week for awhile, and did lower back stretches, but the most important thing he learned was that his core simply was not strong enough for all the exercise he was doing! (my husband just turned 30, and he is 6 foot, and only 170 lbs) so he started doing planks and side planks daily to strengthen along with stretching, and he has now fully recovered…we both now do planks everyday, and it REALLY helps give you a nice strong core to support your lower back. Be careful if you are in pain, see a professional who can show you some specific stretches to help you, as well as some exercises to strengthen you…back injuries take time to heal, and you can injure yourself worse if you try to go back into your workouts full force without addressing the lower back problem…be careful but good luck! Hope this helps!

Ugh, Jenny I hear ya! Sometimes though, I feel like I sabotage myself more than anyone else does. It’s like I will feel that my efforts (ie, eating well, going to the gym, biking to work) are finally starting to pay off, and then, I will fall into this weird funk where I can’t motivate myself and don’t see the point in trying! It’s very frustrating and I know how much better I feel when I take care of my body…but some days, it’s so easy (convenient?) to eat an extra bowl of cereal or stop at carvel and eat too much of a bad thing. Does anyone sympathize?

Kellyinthecity I TOTALLY sympathize…heres a couple tricks I do to keep from sabotaging myself:
    1) I go to a regularly scheduled program of classes so that I know that at least a couple days each week I will exercise.
    2) I keep things like brownie clif bars, kashi crackers, and fruit on hand so that if I absolutely need a snack, I know it will at least be healthy (it also works when my husband tried to make a late night fast food run…I go with him and eat my clif bar instead of ordering fast food)

nobody is perfect. Everyone will be more motivated some days than others, so little “traps” like I have above keep me from slacking off too much on the days i’m just not motivated.

Oh, Kelly. I do that too. It’s not like my partner’s pouring the food down my throat. It’s just easier to accept when I’m having a stressful week. I just give in. Then I feel all bloaty and blah, so I won’t exercise, which makes me even more bloaty and blah. Last week I had a brownie iced cappucino for lunch on three (yes, three) different days. I mean, that’s not even a lunch. No where close, but I reasoned that I deserved it because I was having such a busy, stressful week and it made me feel good. Argh. Then I get so mad at myself for thinking that these little indulgences are okay. They are okay, here and there, but I’ve learned that I can’t just do here and there. It’s like it’s all or nothing with me. I’m either really good with my eating or I’m not. Then I start judging myself by what I’m eating, how much (or not) I’m exercising, etc., like that’s the basis for my self-worth. And this is something that I’ve struggled with for most of my life. Ever since I got chubby in the fourth grade, basically. I have read books on self-image, eating habits and how eating habits affect self-image. I have seen counselors, used the positive self-taking methods and everything else imaginable. I have been fat and unhappy with my body and I’ve been extremely thin and unhappy with my body. I know in my head that my sum as a person is not wrapped up in what I eat or how I look in my jeans and yet I cannot stop the voice in my head that judges me on a continuous basis. I try to look at my eating as purely a means to an end. That it’s just fuel and nothing else. It will work for a while until some very stressful situation pops up and then I’ll run for the nearest brownie, or something equally bad, to soothe my soul and make the stress go away. It doesn’t work, it’s never worked and yet I can’t stop. I never really say this to people, save the the therapist I used to see, which is why my partner doesn’t understand that offering me the apple strudel at midnight is a very bad idea. It’s not his fault that he sabotages me. He eats when he’s hungry. Nothing more. He doesn’t understand that by offering the strudel to me that he’s setting off a huge explosion of thought in my head. He’ll eat it and never look back. I’ll obsess about it for a week. Sometimes I think no one in the whole wide world feels that way but me, but I know there are legions of women who know exactly what I’m talking about. I wish there was some button we could just push that would turn that little voice in our heads off. That we could just look at food as fuel. That we could be satisfied with our bodies just the way they are. Some of us have found that switch. Some of us are still looking. Me, I hope I find it some day…

Jenny, I’m so sorry that you also go through all of that stress as I do, but I must admit it is rather comforting to know that there are other people out there that understand what this feels like! I totally am with you on the all or nothing thing…I feel like if I indulge at a party or an event, I set myself up for eating too many treats later that weekend. It’s almost like if I can stop myself from eating junk, I stop craving it, but it’s stopping for good that’s the hard part! I truly feel so much more confident and pulled together when I’m eating well and excercising, and I try to remind myself of this when I’m shamefully eating cupcakes by myself (I don’t even like cupcakes). Ugh, I’m not sure what the answer is, but like you I’m hoping that I find it someday! It’s a vicious cycle (eat healthy and exercise, fall off the wagon and eat more and stop exercising, feel bad about being gross and lazy and gain the weight back)…help!!

I got BareMinerals (I can’t call it BM-that’s a name for poo!) this weekend after all the commenters on your blog raved over it. I REALLY like it and my best friend (who also sits next to me at work) stopped in the middle of a very intense story to say “Wow, your complexion looks so great. You’re so glowy yet even.” So I’d say it’s working well. They conned me at Sephora into buying some vitamin c stuff to put on under it to help with my pregnancy blotches and that makes me sneeze. I can see a return trip in my future!

I also love BM’s…especially the bronzing part since I have been using tons of moisturizer with spf to protect my skin! Also, I used to run to and from the gym when I wanted to steer clear of those harsh rays…but now I wear a nike or asics white running hat like my fave marathoner (deena kastor-olympics here we come!). I hope that helps!! I feel ya on injuries..I have had 8 stress fractures over the years and just on my left leg…no matter how much recovery I take it still returns. One other great trick is to freeze dixie cups filled with water and ice with those on your foot or injured part of your leg because you can tear down the sides as you slide over injuries (I also use for prevention).

    Have a great night!

kath, i can relate on the “body wanting to be stocky” bit; i am 5’4″ and muscle-y even though i ran distance events in college for cross country and track! yoga for me is a tough thing to do, because my muscles are ALWAYS tight, so i feel like an idiot trying to touch my toes while everyone else seems to flexible. I think every sport attracts people who are naturally gifted at it though; so all the flexible people out there gravitate towards yoga, while us muscle bound athlete types like the running and weight lifting because it suits our strengths! Keep stretching though, it will do wonders for the running/weight lifting/gym activities that you enjoy doing!

Kelly, it does help to know you’re not alone. And you’re not. It does help to have these forums. It’s a place to get it out and get support. I read this blog every day, unless I’m on vacation or something, and if you need to vent, or just a kind word, I’ll be here – along with everyone else. I wish I had some magic words or a wand that I could waive and would make it stop, but I don’t. Just know that you are not what you eat, despite that stupid saying. I imagine that you are a kind, generous girl that feels pulled in fifty directions and does the best she can, just like every other woman I know. And, the next time you eat a cupcake you don’t even like, stop yourself from listening to that stupid voice that tells you that you’re bad and remember that another girl named Jenny has done the very same thing and she thinks you’re just fine. Better than fine, she thinks you’re SWELL!!!!

I have to say I am blown away by the similarity in so many of our situations! Some of us struggle so hard against food, and its a vicious cycle.

I laud all of your honesty and the support. It makes me feel less isolated to know others are working toward recovery/freedom from compulsive behavior with food and exercise.

    We can do it!

    Hi Kath,
I just discovered your blog and totally love it! I am in school to be a dietitian too, so it’s always fun to stumble onto a website like this. I’ve been toying with the idea of starting my own blog, so this is inspiring! But anyway, I had a question. Where do you get wheatberries? I went to Whole Foods today and got SPELTberries, but didn’t see wheat berries. Do you think these Spelt Berries are the same thing, only made with spelt? Hopefully that question makes sense, lol. Thanks!

Totally off topic but I’m curious about suggestions Kath or anyone else has for food for camping trips. We’ll have coolers but that’s it. I can’t do trail mix or nuts (have zero self control and I’ll eat it all)! I know there will be all sorts of junk for the “big meal”. I’m trying to think of something healthy that I could make to take that most people would like and that would do well in a cooler. I appreciate any ideas!

    Jenny/Kelly,
I feel exactly the same way and have struggled with the same thing! I just bought a sugar cookie with cream cheese frosting for dessert tonight (I usually have dessert three times a week) and now there are all of these thoughts going on in my head about how I should have something else because I am worried about how many calories are in the dang cookie! I wish that voice would shut up and let me enjoy my trice weekly dessert. Ugh!

Alyssa, can you just assign an estimated calorie count to the cookie, plan to have it at the end of the night, and then work it into your day? I had (fine, have) a similar problem, and my doctor told me a good way of becoming “okay” with treats is to schedule them and allow myself to savor them. The reason I would get so panicky about eating treats was that they were always “mess ups” that I could beat myself up over. Like, oh, I screwed up — might as well finish off the rest of them and move on to the rest of the contents of the cupboard!

It really helped me to just plan it into my day. And at first, I was so obsessive and disordered about finding out the numbers. I’d spend an hour (more) googling to figure out a calorie count, knowing I could never get an accurate or precise number. It totally sucked all enjoyment out of what was supposed to be a treat.

Now, I just make an estimate, eat and enjoy, and don’t allow myself to go back and crunch more numbers. I hate that I even have to do the estimate, but it’s what works for me.

    Kelly,

ME TOO!!! I have been very busy (in a good way) and having a lot of fun this summer, yet still eating well and exercising most days.

However, lately I have been gorging myself on JUNK! i know it’s a mental thing. My body is not craving it, my mind is. I just did it again tonight on pizza, oreos, and chocolate. Yikes!!

I’m going to try to think/meditate/center myself…I’ve gotta try something to get myself out of this yucky state of mind. It’s just so NOT ME.

I’m glad I don’t turn to drugs or other substances when I’m feeling weird like this…but it’s like food all of a sudden becomes like a mind-altering substance to me when I consume it in this fashion. It’s very strange and unpleasant to say the least!

Julie- I just camped out on Carolina Beach for the night.. This was our awesome menu we grabbed at the grocery store in wilmington…

Appetizer: a bag of precut &washed veggies and TLC cheese crackers both for dipping in Roasted Pine Nut Hummus.
Entree: Grilled Asparagus (we put it in the produce bag with a salad bar package of dressing and tossed it around)
and Grilled Beef Shoulder ( it was very lean, pre cut and already in seasoning by Hormel, like those pork tenderloins but i dont like pork… it had 7 servings, about 150 kcal, 23 g protein…)

and a ciabatta from the bakery with olive oil and roasted peppers, tomatoes, and onions (kath =”ew!” )

Breakfast : We bought eggbeaters, cooked on the grill with a mini pan… a lean ham steak, precooked lean bacon, precut watermelon and bananas

Yummmmmmmm!!! Hope this helps inspire your camping food!

Kelly & Jenny: You are very much not alone and I hope to only offer some inspiration to you.

Remember why you are eating what you are… the cupcake, a brownie…
What are you REALLY HUNGRY for? We eat to nourish ourselves, its an innate. What nourishes you in all aspects of your life?

“”Fill up” an emptiness, be it spirituality, mentally, emotional… Are you stressed at work because you aren’t getting enough respect? Will people respect you more for eating that cupcake ? Are you stressed because you are bored… challenge yourself to become a better lawyer/student/friend/self… Are you stressed because you are giving too much of yourself to others? “Treat” yourself by figuring out what it is that you are needing to fill, and fill it with what it needs….

fill your stomach with what it needs, be it carrots or carrot cake…. but when it needs it

And when you go for that endulgence, think
“Would a sane, healthful minded, BALANCED person be eating this right now?”

    hope this helps…

oh and Kath: I agree with most of the other readers… being beautiful inside and out is evident in both pictures… To be perfectly honest, I don’t notice a difference between the pics other than your lip shade!

Its wonderful that you invest in something that makes you feel pretty! That’s what matters most!

Heh, funny you put the pictures of the Bare Minerals on here because I watch the infommercial, but I never can truly know if it’s all hype, real, or editing effects.

I can’t see much of a difference, but your skin tone looks just that much more even in the second.

Thank you guys so much for all of your kind words and encouragement! It’s so nice to know that I’m not alone, and I really do feel a little better today after a pretty rough, unhealthy week. I never turn to drugs when I feel overwhelmed, food seems to be that crutch for me. I just want a body that I can be proud of and in control of, but it’s such a struggle! Thanks so much for the support, believe me I really needed it 🙂

You guys are too kind 😳

Re. Itching: I live in humid North Carolina and have worn it in the humid heat for about 2 weeks now with zero problems of itching. And I used to have eczema so I think I have sensitive skin. Not sure what it might be?

Thanks also for the great conversation and support going on in here. You guys are the best 🙂

    Alice ,
That would be cool – any idea if there are ways to create a chatroom?

    Laurenq ,
Sounds like you should rest today and maybe see your doctor if it doesnt’ get better. Try ice and Epsom Salt baths. If it doesn’t get better it could be a herniated disc – the husband actually had a spinal fusion for one when we were in college. But not to scare you – hopefully it’s just muscular and will be better tomorrow.

    kim ,
I collect bowls from all over, but those are Pier 1 and Crate + Barrel.

    sarah ,
I’m not your hero – they are assisted! I can do 30 (3 sets 10) with 70 pounds assist but only 4 unassisted. And I do them “wrong” too – with palms facing in. I do them that way because I’d rather work my biceps than my ribcage 🙂

    jells1026 ,
Wordpress.com will get you started quick and easy. If you decide to keep at it, download Windows Live Writer and it will make writing and editing much easier. Good luck!

    DaisyMay ,
We bake plantains with some kosher salt. Not sure how long, but just until they start to brown. Probably 20-40 minutes at 400*. Yum!

    Sarah ,
I used to eat a lot more of the fat-free/slow-churned/loaded types until I read eBrandAid’s perspective and changed my opinion.

    I believe the “Light” package.

    Chelsea ,
    Awesome!! (except the sneezy stuff!)

    goalie30 ,
    Great thought:

I think every sport attracts people who are naturally gifted at it though; so all the flexible people out there gravitate towards yoga, while us muscle bound athlete types like the running and weight lifting because it suits our strengths!

    Lexi ,
Spelt berries are 99% the same as wheatberries so if that’s all you can find get ’em. They actually need less cooking too. But the wheatberries are often called “hard red winter wheat.” See if that’s what they’re under.

    Julie ,
I would just suggest some whole food bars like LaraBars or Nectar bars and perhaps some hard fruit like apples that might hold up better than soft peaches. You could think about preportioning your trail mix into baggies so you would have “100 calorie packs” and would be cheating yourself if you snuck some from a pack early.
