A Taste

Today we got a taste of summertime in the form of a great potluck picnic at Karen’s!

IMG_0003 (480x640)

On my way home from work I snacked on a Fruition in preparation for a quick workout. There are like a combo of a Larabar and a Fig Newton.

IMG_3985 (640x427)

Matt and I both exercised in Karen’s condo’s gym before heading down to the party.

Side Note

This is going to sound really dumb, but my life has changed recently when I realized I don’t have to wash my hair after every workout! Part of the reason I hate working out in the afternoons is I hate the second shower of the day. I hate getting all wet and having wet hair (or having to blow dry it). Well since I’ve had to make afternoon workouts a regular occurrence, I’ve just been putting my hair up and rinsing off. I mean, I get up and take another shower anyways, so my hair doesn’t have to look nice most evenings. It’s made ALL THE DIFFERENCE in my happiness and attitude towards afternoon workouts!!

So tonight I just lightly pulled my hair back and did 35 minutes on the elliptical followed by a super set of 40 pushups and some abs. Workout done in 45 minutes. Then I just rinsed off (didn’t even wash my face hard enough to require a new makeup application) and I was ready to roll. [Doubt I could do this if I went running in 90* though!]

IMG_0017 (640x480) (2)

I was thrilled to see lots of BEANS and salads on the table!! I used to hate baked beans and now they are one of my very favorite foods! They are usually made with real food. Who cares if they’re a bit high in sugar – the fiber in the beans probably balances that out. Yums!

[Anyone have a crockpot recipe for baked beans with pineapple!? I bet that would be really good!]

IMG_0004 (640x480) (2)

I filled my plate with a taste of all the goods:

Fruit, some chopped salads, 3 kinds of beans, chips, hiding pickles and shrimp.

IMG_0008 (640x480)

IMG_0006 (640x480)

Someone handed me a rum-based frozen fruit drink and I slurped it down. DELICIOUS!

IMG_0010 (640x480) (2)

And lastly, I had to make a stop at the dessert table. A little melted vanilla ice cream topped with a berry pie. I didn’t end up eating it all ’cause I was so full, but what I did chomp down was excellent and made my day 🙂

IMG_0015 (640x480) (2)

Back home and ready to do some lounging (after I pack my lunch 🙁 )

[NO NEWS on any of our fun things today! I can’t believe it. Hope that’s not a bad sign!]

Nite!

That looked like a great dinner, and love how many bean options there were. I feel like people put so much energy into meats and dairy that they forget about wonderful beans as a protein.

I’m not one for showering after an afternoon workout either, unless I know I’m going to skip a morning shower. It’s much more pleasant.

I always base my showers around when I’m going to workout! On the weekends and soon-to-be-summer I work out in the mornings, so I take morning showers. During the school week I work out in the evenings, so I take night showers! But I have dry hair, so I only have to wash it twice a week or so… and I base my hardest workouts on the days I have to wash my hair, ’cause it doesn’t matter how sweaty I get! You’re right; it makes working out a lot more fun when you don’t have to worry about being clean then sweaty and then having to wash again.

And if you do find you get paranoid about your hair, there are also a lot of “dry” shampoos out there that just take the oil and sweat out for those days when you’re really givin’ ‘er!

Last year my stylist told me to stop shampooing my hair so much. I have naturally curly hair and it’s the shampoo that makes it frizz! So I wash it about once a week but condition it every day. I’ve had no gross problems whatsoever and my hair’s never been better!

Hahaha you are a riot. I ONLY shower if I workout. So if I skip a workout….yeeeah. If I workout in the afternoon I shower after that and then I’m clean going to bed and when I wake up I’m read to go. I guess I’ve never been a must-shower-outta-bed person.

Most days after my morning workout, I run a bazillion errands and end up not getting my shower til the late afternoon or evening! Eeewwww. But like you said, it takes time to get all fixed up! I keep extra deodorant in my car 😉

Since I have curly hair that is prone to being overly dry, I look for ways to avoid the full wash and shower. I like to wet it and then just slap in some conditioner otherwise my hair just gets too gross and dry for words. A quick rinse + leave-in conditioner is the way to go! 🙂

Btw, that buffet looks glorious! Nomnomnom.

One of my fave recipes is crockpot baked beans with pineapple (!!). Super easy with the crock pot.
Combine 3 cans baked beans and 1 can of diced pineapple (drain just a tiny) in the crockpot. Finely chop a small onion and throw that in there with 1/4 cup natural ketchup and 1/4 cup bbq sauce. Add salt, pepper, 1 chopped garlic clove, a dash cayenne pepper, and 2 tsp dijon mustard. Cook on low heat for several hours!

People have mentioned dry shampoos, but I use a dry mousse after workouts when my hair needs a lift. It soaks up grease and volumizes, which helps me out cause sweaty hair can get so limp! It comes in a little bottle and looks a lot like baby powder. Actually, baby powder probably works just as / almost as well.

About the shampooing–live and learn! I remember the days when I washed and set my hair every single night and I had quite long, very thick hair. Now, 40 years later, I’m happy to say my hair is still very thick, medium length and I wash it about every four days. And it looks fine, unless I run in the middle of a hot, sticky day.

Kath, This is my Aunt Janine’s recipe from Amarillo, TX. This is my #1 recipe I’ll use for the rest of my life I love it so much. No pineapple, but I bet you could just throw a handful in there instead of brown sugar 🙂 This makes a huge amt good for bbqs, so you’d have to adjust for a smaller amt.

    Aunt Janine’s 5 Bean Casserole

    1/2 lb. bacon, chopped
    2 med. onions, chopped
    1 green bell pepper, chopped
    1/2 c. packed brown sugar
    1/2 c. apple cider vinegar
1 tsp. each: salt, garlic powder, turmeric and dry mustard
    1 16 can kidney beans
    1 16 can lima beans
    1 16 can butter beans
    1 16 can pinto beans
1 16 can Morton House beans

Brown bacon, onions and bell pepper in skillet. Stir in brown sugar, vinegar and seasonings. Simmer fro 20 minutes. Add beans; mix well. Pour into greased 3 quart casserole. Bake at 350 degrees F for 1 hour or until bubbly. Yield: 20 servings. Better on the 2nd day!
