1337. Apparently there’s some nerd joke about that [says Matt]. But that’s how many miles we covered today. ~5 biking to our starting point, followed by 4 swift miles on a GREENWAY! Paved, scenic – perfect!
Getting off of my bike was hard – total brick moment. But before I knew it we were running fast miles and they didn’t even feel fast. Hello FLATness!
- 8:28
- 8:36
- 8:25
- 8:20
By the end I was flying and dying.
Biked back home and my gosh my legs are tired!! 1:38 total exercise minutes.
Enter lunch.
Matt made us egg + tomato sandwiches on GH bread
A poked egg
And I made smoothies! The best cure for endurance events (and this qualified as one! I felt like I’d ran 10 miles!)
Smoothies contained unmeasured amounts of:
- Kale
- Ice
- Milk
- Banana
- Frozen cherries
- Nectarine
- Vega Chocolate Powder
and they tasted like chocolate milk!
And then we set out on our afternoon adventure.
Why we moved here reason #1: vineyards just a few miles from the center of town. And really awesome vineyards. Virginia countryside is the closest I’ve found to Sonoma on the East Coast. Eden.
Our first stop was Blenheim Vineyards
A.K.A. the Dave Matthews vineyards! He illustrated this former wine label!
We liked the whites…which were light summer wines
And reds! Which were spicy and also light bodied
And oyster crackers, which were buttery and delicious
Next on our tour…Kluge Estate
We had the choice between two flights…
And a GORGEOUS setting
So of course we had to try them all. The first flight were Albemarle wines…the second were sparkling and reserve wines.
What does Matt think of the pink Rose?
Thumbs up!
I enjoyed the Simple Red flight of 2002, 2004, 2006
But preferred the 2004 most of all
In the reserve tasting, I picked out a VERY prominent cheese in the Kluge Estate New World 2002…
WHAT IS IT? I asked
HE GUESSED RIGHT!!
BRIE. Spot on.
Yummy.
We enjoyed great conversation under the trees at Kluge. It was a near-perfect Sunday afternoon!
Purple teeth shot!
Flashback to honeymooning in Sonoma!! –>
This place is just gorgeous
Last stop was Jefferson Vineyards
What we’re lacking in photos, we gained in flavor – definitely the most "us" wines of the day – full-bodied and fruity-inky
We came home with 3 bottles for our EMPTY wine rack – the Rose, the 2009 Chardonnay and the Meritage
Upon arriving home, we threw together a simple dinner
Roasted eggplant and tomatoes tossed in garlic gold, pepper and salt (notice how garlic gold is such a household staple it’s now lowercase!)
Tossed with whole wheat pasta, parmesan, balsamic and basil.
Simple, filling.
Matt just fed me a chocolate and now we’re going to possibly watch another movie – Netflix online!

Nice dress and nice rock
Wow it is SO beautiful there!
Looks like a perfect Sunday! I love visiting wineries – they are so beautiful!
I also love your smoothie in a beer glass. SIABG?
I want to go to a vineyard so badly! In fact for the hubs and my 5 year wedding anniversary I am trying to convince him to tour wine country instead of go on a cruise. I’ll show him pics like this to convince him guys do like wine tours too.
Okay. So I’m moving to Virginia tomorrow after reading this. FYI.
you two are just too fairtytale perfect!
i want to go wine tasting, so glad you enjoyed yourselves. happy sunday
1337 = leet!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leet
Wow what a great day you had!
I love Charlottesville! I grew up in Richmond and went to school at UVA. I took a vineyard tour in a limo for my bachlorette weekend. It was amazing. My favorite was the Jefferson Vineyard and I had 4 bottles sent down to Florida so I could remember the smells and flavors of Virginia.
Haha, I was just about to post the leet wiki!
how absolutely beautiful! you took some great pictures! Looks like a great SUnday afternoon!
I love that you two spend so much quality time together.. it goes so fast!!! ( trust me ) The vineyards look wonderful!! My hubby ( of 21 years) and I spent a Saturday last month tasting flights…. yum
and so much fun!!! Enjoy your movie !! ???Netfilx??? such a bargain!
Love the gorgeous presentation of the flight at Kluge! And such a gorgesous setting…does look like Sonoma a bit:)
Your dress, and YOU, look so beautiful! Matt also looks very handsome.
The entire afternoon looks so incredibly pleasant and fun!
Have a great evening, Kath!
Woo Hoo, Netflix Online! Best invention ever
Love the dress, by the way!
OH yum! What a fun time:) I haven’t been there but the place looks incredibly beautiful!
1:38 was my time for my duathlon (21 mile bike, 2.6ish mile run) this summer – definitely an endurace event! And great fun.
I am very envious of your laidback weekend, since my life is completely chaotic right at the moment. I wish my husband and I had spent more time together (like you and Matt did today) before we had kids! You are wise to enjoy the time now, before the craziness starts with the bakery and your other future endeavors!
Oh wow! Awesome day in my book!
you looked gorgeous in your dress!
My friends and I went wine tasting in Charlottesville and fell in love with Kluge! The setting is so beautiful that my friends–all 21/22 year old single women–decided that they want to hold their (future, hypothetical) weddings there. I loved all the trees!
Wow! What a day.
I love vineyards and can’t imagine a better way to spend a sunny afternoon. Those flights are awesome – love the glasses.
That looks like a great Sunday afternoon date!
Very jealous! Looks amazing, such a perfect afternoon!
Beautiful photos too.
Wow, it is really beautiful! And I love the picture of you next to the fence
Beautiful ring on your right hand! Looks vintage…love it!
i love your dress! and vineyards. and all those wine-tasting classes. beautiful!
your egg sandwich looks delicious – ever since the recall i’ve only been making stuff at home since i don’t trust the restaurants. am inspired by this! glad you enjoyed your trip to the vineyard.
Looks like a perfect day.
Just wanted to say my dad worked for Legg Mason about 40 years ago. I asked him this weekend if he knew your grandfather. He did indeed and said what a great man he was. Thought you would want to know.
Awww thanks for letting me know Kristin
Yes, thanks Kristin. I’ll tell my mom!
This looks like SUCH a fun afternoon. Great day in general actually- if only every weekend could involve long runs and wine tastings!!
had to ask my husband about the nerd joke, and although it took a few minutes, he knew the answer..
Looks like a great day. Keep up the quality time together, the years fly by! By the way…how’s your hand?
Surprisingly not hurting at all!
Wow–> Those vineyards look SO fun!! Looks like y’all had a fantastic day!
That is like the perfect Sunday! You and Matt are SO cute together. So cute!
My dad would definitely be jealous of this if he saw it. Looks like the perfect afternoon!
What a fun day — good food and wine!
Love those cone-like wine flight glasses, too.
i own that same dress!
it’s buried in the back of my closet somewhere-i wanna go find it now (and drink some wine!)
What a fun and delicious day! The weather has been beautiful this weekend even up in Boston–lovely to be outside!
I LOVE the wine flight vessels… so unique!
Kath what a fun day! You look beautiful in that dress.
What a lovely way to spend a Sunday. C-ville looks like a beautiful place to live. You should team up with the tourism board/realtors assoc to get more people there!
That is a perfect day. It looks like you made the most of a beautiful Sunday.
Such pretty photos! Looks like you had a great time!
Wow, what a perfect day! I have never been wine touring – Now i want to go even more!
You look beautiful!
I love how much time you spend together! And those days always seems to turn out perfect (like today)
Roasted eggplants! Yum!!! And, nice dress!!
Jumping on the dress related blog-wagon – LOVE IT!
Actually “OMG I WANT THAT DRESS!” was my first thought.
BIking and running. Hmmm, I think someone needs to do a triathlon
Those vineyards look gorgeous!
I went to your homestead Hillsborough yesterday for the occoneechee speedway car show. I live in Durham and go to UNC law and my dad was in town so we went over there to check it out. Such a fun time and everyone was SO nice!
I have to admit that I am nerdy enough that I laughed when you mentioned 1337 speak. Many nerdy hours were spent passing notes in class this way.
And I’m jealous of your wine tasting. We’re attempting to find a good tasting of our own.
Kath, where do you get those large white salad bowls? They are perfect! I’ve been searching around for some of them but I can’t find them anywhere!!
they’re Pottery Barn Great White Coupe
http://www.potterybarn.com/products/great-white-coupe-dinnerware/?pkey=cdinnerware-white
Kath, you’re so inspiring and you take such good care of yourself, but your hands and nails look beaten!
Kath just sliced open her hand on glass and had the same hand smashed with a garage door, with in two days of each other.
Yeah, you can tell that to the French press and the garage door…
looks delicious,..
I love those little “cone” wine glasses…they are so cute
Oh gosh, wine tastings look so fun. I haven’t had a chance to go on one yet but I will. I need to learn about wine.
I love that photo of you from behind and leaning on the fence – you look radiant Kath! I also like the little cone-shaped tasting glasses of wine. So cute!
How fun that you have places like that so close to home!
Love your dress – you look beautiful! What a wonderful date-day for you and Matt
The VA country side looks beautiful
I love in MD- so I will have to visit soon!
What a beautiful and active day! It looks absolutely perfect
This looks like such a fun Sunday! I have a friend whose been to the Dave Matthew’s vineyard before, I’ve bought some of his meat at a local butcher where I live too–it’s great!
Virginia wine is actually pretty impressive, I must say!
Ok, the wineries are nice and everything, but your dress is FABULOUS. Where did you get it? You look gorgeous in it!
Ann Taylor, I believe, 4 years ago?
Do you have any posts about fueling up for a workout? I feel like maybe I eat too much, I eat a piece of bread w/ pb before a run and eat either a sandwich or another salad or yogurt or smoothie. I feel like I eat way more than you but only run a max of 4 miles (as of right now).
I haven’t done any fueling because it’s so different for each person. My best advice is to listen to your hunger and balance food groups to get a little of everything in at meals.
Very beautiful there, and what a great workout!
Oh wow looks like you both had a lovely day! Looks so so beautiful! I adore wineries….
I loooooooooove your dress Kath! Summery and stunning and looks made just for YOU!!
Your so pretty!
It is gorgeous there! I feel as if you were transported to a different country, with all those beautiful vineyards and fields upon fields. Lovely.
I would love to try a Rose wine. It seems perfect for summer.
that wine tasting looks so fun!
that place is absolutely gorgeous. i love vineyards as well!
If I knew the pay off would be a relaxing day in the vineyards, I might be encouraged to run/bike for an hour and a half too. What a pleasant day you two planned for yourselves. Enjoy!
Oh wow, I love this post. Not only are the photos beautiful but they remind me of some fabulous memories. Before we moved to China, my husband and I spent a lot of time in Charlottesville, Chris went to UVA and his Dad lives there now (does a lot of yoga too, I should ask for his recommendations). Before our wedding last year, we all went wine tasting in Charlottesville to buy wines for our small wedding. We bought several amazing bottles from Jefferson’s for our wedding dinner along with Champagne from Kluge’s. They even gave us exactly the right number of those fun plastic cones for our champagne toasts! Seeing your photos brings back such wonderful memories of both wine-tasting and our wedding. Sorry for the long comment but thank you so much for this post! It means a lot to the homesick away from home
you’re right, those vineyards are GORGEOUS! it seems like a vacation but so close to home
i love wine tastings and did some in the new jersey area on saturday… love having localish wineries
Looks amazing! We have wineries and vineyards around here, but everything is FLAT
Thanks guys!!!
Jefferson Vineyards was one of my favorites. Later in the fall, if you take a trip out to Wintergreen Winery in the fall, they mull their apple wine. It’s amazing and perfect on a chilly fall afternoon.
Those vineyards are gorgeous! That’s such a perfect way to spend a Sunday.
thanks for the post, kath! even though i live way closer to california wine country, i’m so nostalgic for c’ville & monticello wine country- we got married @ King Family almost exactly a year ago, thanks for bringing me back even though we’re so far away
YOUR MAN DOES THE EYEBROW THING! That is crazy sexy and it is the ONE thing mine can’t do. You lucky girl!
Oh yeah, wine. That looks delish too ;P and I love those shots of the countryside! The closest we get to that here is abandoned Scuppernong rows deep in the forest.
Wow, gorgeous landscape! It does totally look like wine country
What a lovely Sunday afternoon!!
Wow! What a gorgeous day!
you have to go to Veritas Vineyard in Afton on the way to Wintergreen. It’s the most gorgous of all the surrounding vineyards! And Matt would love Blue Mountain Brewery
So beautiful, Kath…and your eats look amazing…my mouth is drooling!
It seems just a lovely day… and lovely dress, it’s just perfect on you!
What a great Sunday!
I love the Virginia countryside.
My dad’s side of the family is from Roanoke and I swear I have bluegrass in my blood.
You will have to hit up Barboursville at some point! It’s on a gorgeous piece of land with a quaint inn and an award winning restaurant.
I love Charlottesville! I had such a great time visiting there a few years ago and going to a bunch of the vineyards!
The two of you just seemed to glow in the pictures today! Great to see.
hopefully i’ll be moving to c-ville one of these days!!! my job has their corporate office down there..
i love it there.. so nice!!! and seeing all your pictures of the countryside and the city itself, makes me really really want to go!

HHAHAHAHAHA, 1337, leet! I TOTALLY get it
, but i’m a total nerd! That looks like a beautiful place to live!
I have totally been to kluge estates! Very pretty! So fun seeing these places that we visited in the spring time all over again. I love it there!
Just browsing your Cville section and had to comment on Kluge. Did you know that it was just bought by Donald Trump? He is still debating whether to keep the vineyard around, last I heard it was still a go!
