This house has a bit of a European feel to it. Maybe it’s the mountains in the distances or the Craftsmanship, but I feel a bit like I’m in a country cottage in the French or Italian countryside. I woke up smiling this morning gazing out the window across from our bed.
We almost put our bed under the windows to make the bed more accessible and I’m so glad we didn’t so we can use the windows fully and see out of them each morning.
My digitally adjusted view!
I love looking at my wedding things when I wake up too –
We’ve got all the windows open today – it’s another sneak peak at Autumn! (I am missing the sunshine though..)
Double OIAJ!
Granola from a jar!
Whipped banana oatmeal (1/3 cup oats, milk, water, salt, chia seeds) in a nutty jar with crunchy buckwheat granola on top.
About halfway through this jar my stomach started turning a bit. Not in a nauseous way but in a "this is too rich" way. So strange. It didnt even taste good by the end! Maybe my stomach is demanding fresher breakfasts in the summertime?
Or maybe it was the hot coffee!?
I spent a few hours reading Sarah‘s Key last night and it was glorious (the reading, not the story – it’s very serious and sad to read). But I’m really enjoying it.
Plans for the day include more reading, RD studying, some form of exercise, and organizing the spice cabinet and tupperware area. Oh, and a shower!

I really admire how in tune you are with your body (ie the stomach turning thing) – you’ve got intuitive eating down to a T! I hope to be like that one day
I am loving your bits and pieces of the house you’ve been sharing! It looks just simply adorable an cozy!
Good luck with your studying!
You have such beautiful taste, Kath, both decor-wise AND food-wise
I love the new place, and I am SO happy for you two. Congrats again and again
Enjoy your Sunday!
what a beautiful view! i love that you’re showing us all of the amazing decor…it’s so pretty! glad you woke up with a smile this morning
I hope you wake up every morning feeling the way you did today. Appreciative, peaceful and happy. What a great place to be!
I love your wedding photo hanging up! It’s a great picture of the two of you!
My boyfriend’s and my intials are K&M too, so I loved seeing your K&M. How cute.
It’s whipped banana oats for the this morning as well!
Sounds like y’all are really enjoying your new house!! I love the wooden letters– what did you use them for in the wedding?
They were on the door of the church – see here!

Good call on not putting the bed right under the window. Mine is and I always regret not being able to look out the window when I wake up and such. That whipped banana oatmeal sounds good!! Sorry to hear your stomach got funky
It’s been a little cooler here in Boston, too, and I was so excited to bust out Kath’s Classic whipped banana oats yesterday and today! My toppings this morning were legendary: almond butter, apple butter, CARAMEL SAUCE and chia seeds. I usually like fruit and yogurt in the summer because it’s more cooling, but I misssssssss my beloved oats!
I was thinking of your lack of sweet last night. Sometimes just for a little something I’ll mix a spoonful of cocoa powder and some honey and a few drops of water. It’s intense and hits the spot:)
XO
Hmm, I haven’t had hot oatmeal for a long time now, and it probably is because of the effect it has on me in the summer. Ah well, I guess maybe oatmeal’s not the solution to EEEEEEEEVERYthing… what an unfamiliar thought.

I love seeing little bits of your house each time you post. It looks like a great house, and I can see where you’d get the European feel from it.
I am so jealous that you have the windows open. It is still too hot and humid for me!
the breakfast looks good with that granola
I’ve had some mornings with stomach turnings like that. Sorry it didn’t work out for you- it looks like it’d be really good!!
I love your new place. It just oozes character! Don’t you love when a home feels like it has a history? My inlaws have a century home and it a real treat to stay there.
I think the breakfast thing does have to do with the summer. My stomach did the same thing the other day. It was like the oats were just too heavy in my tummy.
Just wanted to comment that I love your photos. They make me want to fall into them (or eat them up, depending on the content!).
Don’t blame the coffee! Coffee only does good things.
Nooo sneak peaks of Autumn! I need summer to stay
You seem to really be enjoying your new house, which is lovely. I think your wedding picture is beautiful!
I have to tell you, you’ve inspired me to re-organize the bottom half of my pantry yesterday with all of the organizing going on at your house. Maybe today I take on the top half
um….don’t think i’m psycho or anything, but i just remembered when i read your “nausea” part that i dreamt about you being preggers last night!!!
I understand the rich stomach thing. I seriously can’t handle rich foods and a couple bites is enough to stuff me.
Your view is gorgeous and I’m jealous! Such a wonderful way to wake up!
While I love a piping hot bowl (or jar) of oats in the morning the double dose of hot temperatures from coffee and oatmeal makes me feel gross in the summer, too. It still looks delicious though!
Aw I’m loving your house, and I definitely get the same vibe. Very clean and fresh French country cottage. I had the same problem with the hot oats this morning, I couldn’t finish them. Maybe because I’ve been eating overnight oats? Plus, it’s so much cooler today. Strange!
Your oats look delicious!
And I feel you on the morning view thing. We recently moved our bed from under our windows and it is so luxurious looking at the view in the morning!
I keep putting of reading Sarah’s Key because of the sadness. I think I’ll wait until fall so I can cry under my blanket on the couch!
I was reading Sarah’s Key while nannying and actually started shaking! I read the entire book in one day. It made me so emotional.
lovely sunday morning in your french/italian style house!
I love all the pics of your new home!
enjoy this lovely Sunday Kath.
I LOVE your wedding picture!!
Wake up with a smile? Sounds like something I need to work on this week. Love your wedding picture. Happy Organizing!!
If you are looking for some easy exercise for the day, take a trek over to Carter Mountain Orchard for some peach picking. We were there today (from Richmond) and it’s gorgeous up there, and the peaches are ridiculously yummy!
Noted!
Bedrooms are so personal! I think it’s one of the most important rooms of the house – besides the kitchen of course
I love your house! Especially the letters from your wedding!
I am so jealous that it is starting to feel like fall for you!
I am in San Diego right now and it is warm, not too hot though, but next month I am moving to Oregon just in time for some real fall weather!
K,
Could you tell me your top 3 fave books? I’m in need of a good one!
Thanks
Oh gosh.
Ahab’s Wife is my favorite.
I’ve really liked some of Elin Hilderbrand’s books (beachy kind of reads).
Gosh, I can’t think of any real favorites right now! I haven’t gotten to do the reading I’d like to do while being in school these past few years so nothing is coming to my mind. Jenna @ Eat Live Run has a great reading list on her blog.
Sometimes I get that feeling in my stomach when I eat in the morning. I don’t know what it is, but sometimes the stomach just takes longer to wake up!
How great to feel so happy in your house!! I definitely need to try that granola. I have a whole bunch of buckwheat sitting in my cabinet.
Kath, I’ve currently got two of your recipes cookin’ and bubblin’ : that crunchy buckwheat granola and crockpot sweet potato lentils that you made a few months ago! I’m so excited to try both things! Love your blog.
Woo!
How lovely to wake up to nature! This post made me smile!
Your wedding letters are so sweet.
By the way, I had some great harvest Dakota for brekkie (yumsters)
and thought of you guys.
I am so pleased you are settling into your new
place so nicely! Enjoy, enjoy.
Hey there! Love your blog! Your new house looks beautiful. I have a quick question that I think you and Matt may be able to answer. What is the best way to store bread? I am the only one who eats “healthy” breads in my family, so I try to buy small loaves, but a lot of times I waste some because it molds. Thanks so much!
Matt would say a dark cabinet. Definitely NOT in the fridge. You could also freeze it and take of a slice or half a loaf at a time?
All your little tidbits are so pretty! xx
Your pictures are always soooo perfect! How did you get that good at taking pictures? Seriously, your pictures are beautiful!
Thanks! Just 3 years of practice I guess. I’ve never had a lesson – just try to figure out my camera. The 50mm lens helps a lot!
The first picture in this post is absolutely gorgeous!
I’ve been craving lighter breakfasts lately, too…oh wait, except for yesterday.
I made French toast and it was awesome! Sometimes fruit is all you need during the summer, though- I can totally relate!
Heading to Charlottesville in September…any recommendations for hotels in walking distance to the downtown mall area? Thanks
The South Street Inn is where we stayed a few weeks ago. Very reasonable, free breakfast, internet and RIGHT downtown
Hmm, maybe that was your stomach’s way of telling you that instead of eating the Naturally Nutty nut butters, you should be posting them to your poor blog reader in Australia who doesn’t have access to them?
Hey Kath,
Since this recipe uses raw buckwheat, could one substitute other raw grains, such as quinoa? Are there only certain raw grains that would work? Thanks!
Yeah, you can def. try some other grains. Let us know how they do!
