It’s funny how running errands with your husband can feel like a date : ) Especially two folks in the bed of a big ole truck!
I had to go to Lowes; Matt had a few supplies runs to make so we shared the trip up 29-N.
First stop: Shenandoah Joe’s to pick up a little something for this weekend and iced coffees to cool us off!
I’m also trying this new decaf. While I loved hearing all of your suggestions around the web, I decided that for sustainability purposes I should look for something I can get locally (even if that means at the grocery store) so I don’t end up getting hooked on something that requires $10 in shipping. So I’m trying SJ’s Mexican. Sure smells good! We use their Colombian at the bakery and while I like it, I just don’t LOVE it. Hoping this is a love!
We went to Lowes (got a hose holder and some spray paint!) and to Sam’s for toilet paper and bakery supplies and then headed to the bakery where we unloaded everything and switched cars. May I remind you that it was 100* and the truck is 20 years old, which mean the AC was not effective. HOT times.
I tasted a cookie while at the bakery – not a stellar snack choice, but a good one!
I was in charge of the cooking tonight and roasted up a bunch of fresh summer veggies served with chicken sausage dogs!
Okra, eggplant and tomatoes from both our garden and some that Matt got at the Pen Park market on Tues. I drizzled them all with olive oil and sprinkled on salt, pepper and smoked paprika and roasted for 40 minutes at 350*.
The dogs were Lou’s brand and were quite good – esp. served atop a doughy Cville Crunch slice!
Sparkling water with a splash of Karen’s sweet tea!
We’re planning to cut open a watermelon for dessert! [Can you tell Karen went grocery shopping today and we’re totally stocked up on the good stuff!?]

Such glamorous roasted veggies! Especially the okra. I haven’t had that slimy goodness in far too long.
i can’t think of opening a watermelon without thinking of the joy luck club. if you’ve seen the movie, are now blushing.
Those colorful veggies looks SOOOOOO good.
that truck sure sounds hot! HAha glad you made it back without melting!
I just love okra! So yummy
Ooh, I love a pan full of roasted veggies! Do you ever get the sausages made in-house from Whole Foods? The chicken ones are fantastic (especially the Tuscan flavor)!
I’ve had them before – yes!
Love chicken sausages as hot dogs! And there’s nothing better than a fully stocked fridge
perfect ketchup squiggle
and I know what you mean about wanting to love a coffee, not just like it. Keep us posted on that one!
That is a GORGEOUS picture of the veggies on the pan. It looks GOOD!
The bed of the truck is the cargo area in the rear. You and Matt were in the cab of the truck right? It made me laugh to read that you said it was like a date and the two of you were in the bed of the truck. I’m pretty sure it would have been a really HOT date in the bed of that truck.
Dinner looks delicious.
Right right cab! Haha we were not in the bed together
I had the exact same thoughts when I read this LOL. Glad you enjoyed your “hot” date. Do you think you and Matt will try to have “date nights” without the baby very often? We never did and still don’t go out without kids very often, but every once in awhile it’s nice to have an adult night out. We enjoyed some Aidell’s and Trader Joe’s chicken sausages this week with some roasted veggies and Great Harvest Asiago Pesto and Cracked Pepper, Swiss, Sundried Tomato. I’ll have to check out the Lou’s brand if I can find it here.
I giggled when I read “bed of the truck” too. Glad we got that clarified! Being in the bed of a truck with one you love can be a frolicking good time, but probably not in this heat. And probably not during advanced pregnancy!
I love Lou’s brand of chicken sausages–particularly the cilantro one–was this that one? If so, that is hilarious because I had the same dinner tonight but on hot dog buns
Yup!
Every time you post pics of that bread I swoon! Gonna need to find a way to get some of that!
where do you get your smoked paprika?
I just ordered it from Amazon (I have prime) but I hear world market has it. I might have seen it at whole foods since I bought it. Or wait, did I buy it at whole foods?! I can’t remember!
I’m pretty sure I bought my Smoked Paprika at Whole Foods! They do NOT have it at Kroger.
I was sweating it out yesterday in an old farmhouse yesterday. I literally said aloud, “What does a pregnant woman feel like in this heat?”
Chicken sausage dogs, veggies, and watermelon sounds so perfectly summer!
I’ve been meaning to ask if you had found the perfect decaf! Let me know how you like SJ’s. I just finished my coffee stash and need to replenish it this weekend!
Will do!
I was about to buy the SJ’s Mexican blend decaf at Whole Foods today, but one of the guys working there recommended Trager Brother’s Coffee (from Nelson County!) Blend 50–he said it’s his favorite decaf, great in a French Press, and great cold-brewed for about 10 hours. I’ll let you know how it is once I try it tomorrow morning!
Oh do let me know how it is!!
I think I brewed it too long today…it got a little bitter, but with a tiny dash of raw sugar and some milk, it tastes great! Later this week I’ll make it cold-brew style, and we’ll see how that goes…
I must be tired because I just got so confused when you mentioned having sausage with your dinner–I couldn’t find it on your plate! Then after a good 30 seconds, I realized it was a bit camouflaged into the bread it was on. Woops!
your dinner looks amazing, and it was fun to hear about the Lowes/Sams trips~ so American and with only 9 months left for us in S. Korea I am looking fward having those simple homey one stop.shops again;) enjoy that watermelon!!
Love that doggie ball jar
for some reason describing the bread as “doughy” makes me want a slice more than anything right now!!
Looks like some super yummy eats!!
LOVE those roasted veggies for dinner; so pretty!
Does GH make hot dog buns?
Yes but only by request
Get that truck AC charged!
I love running errands with Dustin. It makes dull and boring an adventure, especially when one of us has road rage.
(not me) hehe
The veggie bake looks delicious! I need to try that!
We don’t own a house yet but I love to go to Lowe’s and dream. Paint and cabinets. Sigh!
I am in love with pictures of your Cville Crunch Bread! Roasted veggies…minus the okra (lol) look yummy!
love the truck date, and the mexican blend sounds delish.
i still have not gotten the handle on roasting vegetables! i think i always just worry that they’re turning too brown wayyyy before they’re done. you make it look so easy. :p i guess i should try again.
My hand-me-down car from my grandma doesn’t have AC either, so I know how you feel! I dread having to drive on hot days!
That Mexican blend coffee sounds great!
I love roasting veggies. I will roast any kind of vegetable. I think they taste so much better that way.
Brave girl using the oven in that heat! We tend to fire up the bbq for doing cooked veggies in the summer (and I live in Canada, where our heat pales in comparison to yours). I always figure I’d rather keep the heat outside than have the air conditioner battle with the oven heat. Those chicken sausage dogs sound delicious!
I totally agree: running errands with your man does feel like a date! My boyfriend and I recently moved in together and we have been running a lot of errands lately. I have been having so much fun doing mundane things with him!
I like sweet tea as long as it is not too sweet. If it is too sweet, then I have to add water to it.

I wish I could find chicken sausages more easily in the UK!
Ketchup, mustard, and sausage = a match made in heaven
