Bad news on the facial front – he’s even worse. It looks like he’s wearing a mask:
I just called the doctor and they have called in the oral Prednisone prescription to our pharmacy and I’m going to pick it up on my way to the gym in a bit.
The patient requested oatmeal for breakfast so I scratched my plan for yogurt + granola and made a pot of oats.
Topped with granola! The Best Damn Granola to be specific
- 1/3 cup oats, milk, water, pinch salt
- Half banana
- Half tbsp chia seeds
- Half tbsp raisins
- 1/4 cup cottage cheese
- Vanilla
- Best Damn Granola
- MaraNatha AB
Spice + Nice
This bowl is a new line I’m putting in my Open Sky store. They are called Cali bowls and have an inward facing lip so that food goes back onto your spoon instead of over the edge. Kinda like a safety railing on a cliff!
They come in different sizes, are lightweight, BPA free, dishwasher + microwave safe, and have a convenient grippy on the bottom to keep them from sliding. Excellent for oatmeal and cake mixing alike.
Also come in yeller!
Should be up in the store in the next 24 hours.
Going to study, exercise and eat lunch with Kelsey!

Wow, your poor hub. Hope that Rx kicks in for him!!
Lovely bowls, btw.. I like the grip feature!
Yeah, Matt is feeling pain for sure- hopefully the Prednisone will calm that down for him. I am sending out an all points bulletin for poison ivy hairy vines throughout the area (the southeast at least).
Going to check out the best damn granola now! Happy Wednesday!
cute bowls! Where do you find this stuff? I always use the same bowls/plates that we got for our wedding
Love the blog Kath. Long time reader, first time commenter. Love the Kale Chips!!!
Back to the matter…Poor Matt. Give him a hug for me! How can Megan be so callous talking about bowls when clearly the most important part of this post is Matt’s health.
Hope Matt gets better soon
Aw, poor Matt! Hopefully the drugs help… that sucks
I really like those bowls!! Which size were you using for your breakfast?
Oh, bless his heart. That is the most pitiful picture–poor boy. Can he see at all? Take good care of him today!
Hi. I like your blog. Do you use steel-cut or quick-cook oats? I know steel-cut are healthier, but can it still be a good choice to go with quick-cook?
aww your poor husband! & i love the bright colors of the bowls! fun
how do you make your coffee?? it looks delicious. i can’t seem to get mine right at home.
I LOVE those bowls! I saw some great ones at Target that I was going to pick up but I might change my mind now!
POOR MATT! My heart is seriously breaking for him! I can’t imagine if that happened to me! I hope he has a speedy recovery with the meds!
Just started reading your blog! Great stuff!

Thought I would share a poison oak story as a word of advice….my sister had poison oak and instead of getting better, she was getting worse on the steroids….she and the doctor realized that she was ‘re-infecting’ herself with the oils that were on her backpack and car seat. Make sure you bleach/sanitize EVERYTHING that your husband may have touched after he pulled the vines down….
Oh, poor Matt. I surely hope the next round of meds help him.
I like those bowls, I like how shiny they are!
I hope your hubby feels better fast!
My eyes are watering just looking at him!
Omg, poor Matt.
poor matt!
I hope the Prednisone works! I took that once for an allergic reaction and had more energy than I’ve ever had in my life. I only took it two days though… I heard that taking it for longer than a week can cause bad side effects (puffy face, anger issues). I’ll keep my fingers crossed!
Love the bowls!
Oh poor Matt!
Oh my gosh poor thing!!!
I hope it starts getting better and not worse from here on out!
Hi Kath,
I wanted to say that I had a similar experience as Matt. At age 12 had a horrible reaction to poison ivy in my eyes after I found my way into a patch playing hide and seek at a family reunion. My eyes looked exactly the same way so I know what he is going through! I believe I got a cortizone shot which would be similar to the prednisone since they are both steriods. I hope this gives him hope today that this will be cleared up!
Take care,
Jean
On no!! Poor Matt! I instantly thought of that scene from Hitch where Will Smith’s face blows up like a balloon and he drinks Benadryl like it’s in a juice box. I can’t imagine how terrible he must feel
Feel better Matt!
Tell Matt I’m sorry he’s going through this but the pics you post of his condition bring a little laughter to my day, so thanks! He’s such a good sport!
That’s awful.
that is awful
Oh geez, he looks awful. Does he know you are posting these pics of him
I hope he gets better soon!
Poor guy! That looks like it hurts! Get well ASAP!
I’ve never been so thankful for my own poison ivy … at least it wasn’t THAT bad.
I thought of Matt when I saw a commercial for Hitch this morning. The scene where Will Smith has an allergic reaction. Hope he gets better soon!
Those bowls are really cute.
Hopefully the meds will take effect soon!
That looks terrible – hope your hubby feels better soon. I’ll be thinking of him. Sounds like you’re doing a super job of taking care of him though! Good job!
Awww…poor Matt. He needs some homemade soup & a massage. That is an INSANE allergic reaction!
Aaahhh, poor Matt. I hope the Pred. helps him. Depending on the dosage of it, as well as the length of time he has to take it, it can make people kind of irritable among other things. I hope they do not make him feel anything other than better, just wanted to give y’all a heads up.
Best to you!!!
omg, poor Matt. My heart goes out to him! I really hope the medicine works for him today.
I’m sure you have plenty on your mind already, so if you get a moment to answer my question I would appreciate it so much.
I have a question regarding natural supplements/vitamins:
I’ve started to incorporate chia powder, flax seed, and vitamins into my diet recently, But, I’m wondering if I’m overdoing it?
Is it ok to take 1 T. of chia powder, 1 T. ground flaxseed, 1 multivitamin, 1000 mg of calcium supplement, 2 vitamin C gummies (240 mg) , 1 Vitamin B Boost gummies ( 20 mg Niacin (B3),
2 mg Vitamin B6, 400 mcg Folate,Folic Acid, 30mg Vitamin B12), and 1 proboiotic pill (Florastor) a day? (the gummy vitamins are the Vitafusion brand).
Do you think I need to eliminate some things? I’m afraid of overloading my system.
Some other info: I eat a pretty healthy diet and hope to get pregnant in the next year.
THANK YOU!
FUN BOWLS! Poor Matt
I’ve had poison ivy before and it’s NO fun!
Aww poor Matt! goodness i hope he gets better asap!
Poor Matt! I hope he can get some relief soon! Poison Ivy is definitely not fun!
awww poor matt! i hope he called in for work again today!
those bowls look awesome!
jenna

I LOVEEEEEEEEEEEEEE those bowls! they looks so cool!!
Oh no! I really hope that prescriptions works quickly, poor guy
Those bowls sound awesome!
I hope they get the prescription called in soon – I’ve never had a reaction that bad, but I know it is not fun to be feeling like that.
OMG!! Your poor husband. How awful for him. I really do hope that the prescription kicks in and works for him.
What great bowls! Love the fun colors.
poor Matt! Hope that medicine kicks in quickly!
Oh no! I hope Matt gets better soon. That’s so awful. Is it itchy/painful?
Matt-get well and feel better soon! You are an incredibly good sport to have photos taken when you must feel so yucky.Let Kath take care of you as I know she will!
Kath,I have dicovered the best OATMEAL ever is not rolled oats nor steelcut oats,
but SCOTTISH OATMEAL and it takes the same time as old fashioned stovetop otmeal(10 min max).I am dying for you to try it!
It basically looks like finely chopped steelcut really, but the texture is to die for and cooks as quickly as rolled oats.So darned yummy.
I enjoy Bob’s red mill scottish oatmeal. but honestly I am sure there are other great brands out there,it’s just what I found in my store.
I would love to read a review of them from ya….pretty please?Cheers!
omg poor hubby! he looks sooo puffy – i hope he heals ASAP.
i’m sure your yummy oats helped the hubby feel at least a teeny bit better. Poor guy!
Oh, poor Matt! I hope he gets some relief soon. Gosh.
Those bowls look fun – and practical.
poor Matt, I had the same thing happen a few years ago when my pollen allergy decided to go crazy, hope he recovers quickly!
Oh poor Matt, I hope he feels better soon!!
Yikes! Can he see? Poor guy! Hopefully he can still catch a movie or something while he’s homebound…
Lucky he has you to be nurse for him! My maternal instincts always click in really hard when my husband gets sick… you just wish you could make it all better for them!
oh man! I hope he gets better before you leave for Foodbuzz! That way you don’t have to worry too much about him. Poor guy. Hopefully the meds will help.
I feel so so bad for Matt! He looks like he can’t even see! Hope those drugs work magic…
Wow-that looks painful. Hopefully he gets better soon! I send him my well wishes!
I’m a new reader and today I had to comment.. your poor husband. Ugh. I hope he gets better ASAP!!! It pains me to look at him. I’m sending lots of get well fast vibes!
cute bowls! i like the inward facing lip idea. hope your hubby gets better soon!!
Poor Matt-that’s terrible!
Ahhhh, poor Matt. That really is an allergic doosey. I really hope the prescription works fast! I remember once, when I played Toad in “The Wind in the Willows,” I had to paint my face green. I used make-up that had fragrance in it and it caused my skin to react similarly. It was a bit more rashy though. At least his sweet wife made him a yummy bowl of oatmeal for comfort!
OH my gosh! What an allergic reaction! What happened?!
Aww, poor guy! I hope the swelling goes down soon – that looks like it would feel awful
OH no!
I feel so badly for him!!! The pictures keep breaking my heart!
(my bro got poison ivy right before his confirmation in 8th grade – he looked exactly the same!) tell matt i hope he feels better!
oh yeah – and see you in two days!
It can only get better, right?! I feel so bad for him… he must be really uncomfortable, but at least he has you helping him out.
That granola bowl looks super crunchy! Poor Matt, oh my gosh!
Sounds like Matt got into some poison OAK.
Hopefully the pX helps your husband:(
That oatmeal mixture looks great!
Awwwwwww, poor Matt!!
Cute bowls!
Jenn
Oh my goodness! Poor Matt. Hope the new meds work quick. Get better Matt!
Oh wow, poor Matt! I hope he gets better soon.
We’ve all learned an important lesson from him! Aww, haha, j/k.
Aww, poor thing. He has poison eye-vy!
Your poor husband. He looks like he’s in pain. Owie! Those bowls look great. They would be perfect for a little one learning to eat more organized. Ahem, like my son!
Yikes. I think I’d be taking him into the hospital is the steroid shot didn’t work.
Oh my he reminds me of when I got terrible poison ivy as a kid. My parents had to wrap me up as a burrito to keep me from scratching. I hope the steriods help and he’s back to his chipper self soon.
Those bowls look great! I love the yellow.
Sending best wishes to Matt – hopefully the new prescription helps him out!
Oh my gosh Matt! It hurts to look at him! Poor thing.
I love the bowls, very cute.
Sending well wishes to your poor hubby. I have an autoimmune disease, my body attacks me when I eat food, I’ve had to take Prednisone several times. It doesn’t feel good- but it will do the job. He will get better soon and it always helps to have a sweet spouse around to sympathize and baby you
Kath, does the doctor know how much worse it has gotten?? I work in the ER and i think he looks like he needs more than just oral prednisone. I would get him in ASAP if he is getting worse or not better.
Are you absolutely sure it is poison ivy?
Oh gosh. I hope Matt feels better soon!
Love, Love, Love the bowls!!
Oats look good too!
oh god,I’m so sorry about Matt!I hope he gets better soon.
I bet your oatmeal creations will help him
Tell your adorable hubby to feel better soon…..he looks miserable!
ditto on the ER suggestion
Yeah, I’m kind of thinking I’d be at the ER too. Maybe I’m a hypochondriac, but I wouldn’t mess around with it. Some allergic reactions are just so extreme that scary things can happen.
Hey Kath!
A few years ago my boyfriend’s eye began swelling up just like that. He went to the hospital and they gave him a prendisone shot. Unfortunately, not only did that not work, it caused the inflamation to spread into his other eye. After days in the hospital with no relief, he requested benadryl, and soon after the swelling subsided. They still dont know exactly what caused his swelling, but it was called peri-orbital cellulitis.
I dont know if Matt has tried benadryl but it helped Brandon. I can provide pics if you want…
I hope Matt feels better and please let me know if you have any questions… maybe Brandon can help!
Poor, poor Matt – I agree with the emergency room – has he had troubles breathing? When a face is that swollen I worry about the nasal passages being obstructed.
Hope that the prescription works right away
OMG I can’t believe the reaction he is having to that, poor thing!
I hope the meds help out.
As for those bowls, they look awesome, I haven’t seen that design before and love the concept!
My heart just hurts for Matt. He must be miserable!!!
On a lighter note, those bowls look fantabulous! Love the edge so nothing spills out!
OH MY GOODNESS! Poor Matt. I hope he starts to feel better once he gets a few more drugs in his system. He must be miserable.
Hey Kath and Matt,
Looking at the picture I think he needs IV steroids. Don’t know if Sarah would agree with me or not. I recommend ED visit. I just tried to find your number but I don’t have it on my phone otherwise I would have called in person to tell you!
–Josh
Awww, I feel SO bad for Matt! Hope the medication helps him out!
Poor Matt! That picture makes me want to cry. Hope he feels better soon!
Oh, my gosh, poor Matt! I’m sending him lots of hearty get well soon wishes. I’ve had poison oak run ins, and they were no fun.
Hugs, Kath!
Bowls look awesome!!! Hope Matt feels better!
oh my god he must be so miserable! poor matt:( i would have a total anxiety attack if my eyes were swollen shut like that – so scary.
on a totall unrelated note, my first thought when i saw your oatmeal (before getting to the rest of your post) was I LOVE THAT BOWL! definitely going on my to-purchase list!
Oh my gosh….the poor thing…I hope that clears up FAST!
Aww, I hope Matt feels better soon!
those bowls are great! sorry to hear about matt; i was hoping for a better report this morning. is he in a lot of pain?
Ouch! Get better Matt! Maybe a pumpkin beer will help
Oh my gosh, he looks so unhappy. I hope he feels better soon!
I hope the patient is doing better. Keep in close touch with your doctor- he might want to go to the ER or walk in clinic for the swelling.
Thanks for all of the poison ivy recs. I have since sanitized everything he might have touched (computer, phone, etc) with rubbing alcohol. I only go to the ER in life or death situations!! His breathing and airways are fine (even through his nose) so we’re not worried about that. He does know I’m posting the photos – it was his idea!! He is also taking benadryl, but that doesn’t seem to do much.
Mara,
That was the 3 cup bowl.
carrie,
Old Fashioned Rolled and they are just as healthy!
Emma,
French press!
Suzanne,
Wow, that’s a lot of supplements!! I don’t think you need both the multivitamin and all of the individual. And with seeing more of your diet, it’s hard to know if you even need those! But it does sound a little bit much to me.
Marla,
I’ve seen that oatmeal before, but it’s rather expensive! That’s why I probably wouldn’t use it or buy it. If you want to send me some in the mail, I’ll use it up
Kath
yes, yes, prednisone taper!!! i think this is going to work!! fingers crossed
PS: THANK YOU for your sentiments on the ER (since i am there now!). however, i will admit that most of the patients i saw there over the past couple shifts looked better than matt does. of course if he starts wheezing or feeling any tightness or swelling in the throat, bring him straight in!
omg poor Matt! How awful!!
eeek. def. looks like he needs the ER!
Aw, poor Matt.
You guys seem to be doing all the right things to help the swelling though. Poor fella. Hope the steroids do the trick.
Oh they are cute bowls. I love the lipped edge. Simple but clever!
