Mmmm….Wedding Cake

June 2, 2008

I sure do wish I had a slice of our cake to have for breakfast today…..Chambord-French Vanilla Cake with Raspberry filling and Vanilla Buttercream. Mmmm!

I made this anniversary video over the weekend! It’s 7 and a half minutes of highlights from the big day. I wish the quality was better, but YouTube kept me to 100mb of blurriness.

Highlights From 6.2.07

We’re celebrating today with a romantic lunch uptown at Sonoma Modern Kitchen (our favorite!), which seems appropriate since this time last year we were honeymooning in Sonoma.

In other news, we were up early this morning for a before-work workout. I did the Stairmaster, a cool down on the Squirrelliptical, and some upper body lifting and abs.

Before we left, we both had some of the Panda Puffs I picked up at Trader Joe’s for the husband, w ho loves anything peanut butter. They were very good! I wouldn’t eat them as a breakfast to fill me up for the day, but as a snack, they’re perfect. Actually, though, the milk was a little heavy in my stomach during the workout. I’ll use a little less next time.

For breakfast I reheated a serving of steel cut oats I made yesterday with a little milk to rehydrate, half a peach, 1/2 a cup of pumpkin, pumpkin pie spice, and some granola on top. It was actually really bland, so I added some maple syrup to the edges, which helped some. I missed my banana-infused oats!

I’m still feeling the coffee withdrawal in my neck and shoulders. Blarg!!

And for a little more fun, here are some more wedding day photos :)

I am so confused how many anniverseries do you have? This is the 3rd Anniversiary post you have made. Am I lost?

4 Kath June 2, 2008 at 8:17 am

We celebrated last weekend at Bald Head with the cake and flowers, Saturday was kind of the anniversary because it was the same Saturday, and today is the official anniversary. Why NOT celebrate as much as possible!?

5 Foodie June 2, 2008 at 8:18 am

Happy Anniversary! Your wedding photos are beautiful!

6 M.E. June 2, 2008 at 8:19 am

Hi Kath (or others too),
Do you have any advice for someone who just can’t find anything much to enjoy about exercise? I am already petite and eat healthy, so for now I am happy with how my body looks. I know I should be exercising for better health in the long run, but that is not a very good in the moment motivator. I do enjoy walking, but get the impression that’s not “good enough.” I have never been an athletic person and other exercises like running and other cardio just feel hard, uncomfortable, unpleasant. Where do you find the “fun” to get you motivated everyday? Over the years I have tried many times to get into an exercising routine, but I never last more than a few weeks using sheer will power, because I simply don’t enjoy it. Anyone know if there is a way to change that mind set?

Happy Anniversary! What a beautiful wedding, thanks for sharing the highlights with us!

23 Erin June 2, 2008 at 9:21 am

Don’t worry, Kath. My fiance and I have the following anniversaries:

Meetaversary (the day we met)
Phoneaversary (the first time we talked on the phone)
Dateaversary (our first date)
Realdateaversary (our first date was an impromptu dinner 2 nights before we had planned, so this was the “real” first date)
Leaseaversary (aka cohabaversary or roommataversary)
and our poodle’s “birthday,” which is when we met him (a few months before we got him). That one’s 2 years tomorrow!
and there are probably more…

And we mention at least 1 of them every month! I say, enjoy it and show appreciation for each other as much as you can :)

24 Ashley June 2, 2008 at 9:27 am

36 claire June 2, 2008 at 10:11 am

Congratulations on 1 year!!

37 Serena June 2, 2008 at 10:13 am

Kath, Happy Anniversay! You usually only drank one cup of coffee a day, right, and not a gigantic starbucks cup full? Could the achy feeling be something else (not enough water, muscle soreness from exercise, or something else) besides caffeine withdrawal? You could be super sensitive to caffeine, of course, but I just wondered since you didn’t seem to be having so much of it before you stopped to still be having withdrawal effects. I think everyone’s probably different though. I drink coffee (mornings only) probably 3-4 days a week and when I don’t have it for a few days I sometimes feel sluggish, but never achy.

38 Lauren June 2, 2008 at 10:16 am

Congrats on one year!

Super random question, but do you have a pickle brand that you recommend?

39 Yoon June 2, 2008 at 10:26 am

Happy *real* anniversary Kath:)!

The wedding photos look beautiful!

40 tvk June 2, 2008 at 10:39 am

On the subject of panda puffs and general peanut buttery goodness, I’d like to give a shout out to Barbara’s Peanut Butter Puffins.

Happy anniversary. To Erin, your list of anniversaries is awesome!

41 Suzanne June 2, 2008 at 10:40 am

haha…I agree – why not celebrate your anniversary as much as possible! :) HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, KATH!

Unfortunately, your video is no longer available? Bummer! I wanted to see it….

Maybe it’ll be fixed later. I’ll check back.

42 Suzanne June 2, 2008 at 10:59 am

Never mind – it works! It was beautiful! Makes me want to go watch my wedding video again. :)

43 BethT June 2, 2008 at 11:03 am

How did you make your video? Edit down your wedding video? What software did you use? Just curious.

44 Kiala June 2, 2008 at 11:08 am

Happy Anniversary!

Also, I can’t eat oatmeal anymore without banana, either.

It just tastes stupid.

45 Ruby Red Vegan June 2, 2008 at 11:14 am

Your wedding photos are gorgeous! And you’re really tech-savvy for putting together the highlights video. You and the husband are so perfect together!

I can’t eat oatmeal without bananas anymore, either! It’s just not sweet enough. And if the banana is too starchy and not browned to my satisfaction, it just doesn’t taste good either. But pumpkin + peach sounds like a great flavor combo — maybe adding banana to that would perk up the blandness! Peaches + banana are good, and banana + pumpkin is good, so why not all 3?

46 Betsy June 2, 2008 at 11:18 am

a huge happy anniversary!!!!!!

47 chrissy June 2, 2008 at 11:19 am

Hey Kath! Happy anniversary- your pictures are gorgeous and your wedding looks like it was a blast! I’m actually getting married on August 30 and I have a question for ya…i love the song that you walked down the aisle to! Do you remember its title and composer? Thanks! Hope you have a great anniversary!

48 Leng June 2, 2008 at 11:22 am

THat is just so sweet! You two look so happy together! I’m a sucker for romance, and your vid was SO romantic! Have a great anniversary!

49 Ally June 2, 2008 at 11:38 am

Enjoy your anniversary! That was such a wonderful video as well, Kath!

50 mel June 2, 2008 at 11:39 am

so random..but did you and Matt take dance lessons before the wedding? I’m getting married next august and I don’t want to screw the dance up! haha

51 bluesquash June 2, 2008 at 11:41 am

HAPPY, HAPPY, HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!!!!! You were one of the most beautiful brides ever! I love your wedding dress! What time did you guys get married?? I graduate from hs tonight at 7!! So it would be funny if it was around the same time. :-)

52 Amandamoo June 2, 2008 at 11:54 am

Happy Anniversary!

Kiala, I too can no longer eat oatmeal without banana… A coworker told me that scientists are having trouble getting bananas to polinate properly and they will be going extinct within the next 10 years. He read a book and everything (the book is called “Bananas”).

I’m scared. Very, very scared.

53 Ashliqua June 2, 2008 at 11:56 am

Happy Anniversary Kath and Matt! Kath, thanks for sharing your pics and video…I love those extra personal touches about your blog. And I agree with everyone above–celebrate as much as possible! Congrats!

54 Jess June 2, 2008 at 1:25 pm

Congrats Kath & Matt!

I feel guilty asking a question now, but I’m going to anyway. haha.

I love exercising (although I’m kind of new to the whole gym thing) and I have a really cheap membership at my college. But cheap = not so great because their hours kind of stink, and they close on any and all holidays (and for like three weeks for Christmas break). Today I went in and they have a sewage problem so they’re closed D:

I’m not that concerned with switching memberships to another gym because it’s not worth it to me for the next couple of months, but I AM interested in other ways to get some cardio in. I walk a lot but I’m short – 4’10!- and I feel like I need a lot of cardio to lose my last ten or so pounds. I can’t run, because despite getting the fancy shoes, I ALWAYS get shin splints. And I have a bike but I’m really not comfortable riding the city because I’m really inexperienced.

Does anyone else have ideas for cardio? I know magazines and stuff say dancing and cleaning the house, but I mean anything that will really burn a LOT of calories? THANKS!!!

(Re: Bananas – one variety will be going extinct.
But not ALL bananas. It’s the bees we should be worrying about :(

55 Jess June 2, 2008 at 1:26 pm

Oops. So after my epic novel-length comment I noticed ME asked the same question. lol sorry.

56 caitlinbo June 2, 2008 at 1:41 pm

jess – does your college have a pool? swimming is great, low impact, and very challenging!

i also like going to state parks and going hiking… its so fun it doesnt even feel like a workout.

57 Meghan June 2, 2008 at 1:52 pm

Happy Anniversary! What a beautiful wedding you two had…definitely celebrate as many times as possible!

58 Andrea June 2, 2008 at 1:53 pm

59 Kim June 2, 2008 at 2:12 pm

Beautiful. Just Beautiful.

60 Kath June 2, 2008 at 2:31 pm

Thank you everyone!!,

M.E. ,
Other than the usual suggestion to try out a group exercise class you might like (boot camp, pilates, yoga, spinning) I’d say you need some good entertainment: TV or magazines. They make my workouts fly by and I look forward to reading the newest issues. My gym has TV’s too so if yours does maybe you could plan to go during your favorite show??

Erin ,
Love all your celebrations!!!

Ashley ,
The reception was at Duke Gardens on the Duke University Campus.

Serena ,
It’s been consistent and predictable enough that I’m sure it’s the coffee – I don’t normally ever have shoulder aches except when I drink too much or withdraw (as I’ve found) from coffee. I know 1 cup isn’t that much, but having a dose for so long was enough for my body to get hooked. Not so much on the quantity but the regularity.

Lauren ,
I like regular dill, but I also really like Claussen. They’re like restaurant pickles – kind of whiter and more like a cucumber? They come refrigerated so they’re often in a different part of the grocery store. Sometimes near the pimento cheese and chicken salads.

tvk ,
I LOVE Puffins, but TJ’s was all out. They are better than the Pandas. I don’t buy them often because I can’t keep my hand out of the box.

BethT ,
Yeah, I took our footage and used Windows Movie Maker to shorten it (it’s over an hour) and edited the music, transitions, etc. to my liking. It was a ton of work!

chrissy ,
Pachelbel’s Canon in D!! My favorite song in the world. The version was the Canadian Brass’s version. I worked with our quintet on the specific arrangement and timing for my 60 second or so walk. Here’s the version:

mel ,
We took 2 Waltz lessons and learned 4 token turns that we could use whenever we wanted. We didn’t want to just stand there and sway. I highly recommend it!

bluesquash ,
The ceremony was at 5pm :)

If bananas go extinct, so will I.

Jess ,
If switching gyms isn’t an option, I suggest 1) lots of walking. I love walking! It burns more than you think. 2) A public pool where you might be able to get in good swim workouts. 3) Buying an inexpensive bike and helmet and going for bike rides. 4) A jump rope. 5) Or dance around the house extra hard! Hope that helps.

61 Carrie H June 2, 2008 at 3:01 pm

I’ve read “Banana” by Dan Koeppel. His website is

The book is really interesting … all about the scandals the big American fruit companies caused in Latin America over the past century and a half. It is really sad, actually. It also talks about bananas and the possibility that the breed we eat right now, the Cavendish, will soon be extinct. Apparently, scientists are working on a marketable replacement right now. This is not the first time a commonly consumed banana breed has gone extinct, either, as he points out in the book. Our banana, Koeppel says, would seem bland and mushy to our great-grandparents.

It is a really interesting book, though it is a little tedious at times. I recommend it to all banana lovers.

Carrie H

62 Allyson June 2, 2008 at 5:26 pm

Congrats Kath (and the husband)!

That song moon river reminds me of SATC! lol The restaurant you went to today looks wonderful-I wish I could find a place like that around here! (I’m sure there is, just haven’t found it yet-new to the area)

63 Faye June 2, 2008 at 7:07 pm
