Whine + Wine

Can I whine about how much I hate titrations !?!? Lab went well tonight, but man it was long. So I celebrated with some real "wining" 🙂

Dinner (I just wrote lunch by mistake!) was a big rush. I thought about going out to eat (EarthFare, smoothie, etc) but really making a packed dinner is just as quick – quicker! So I made a sandwich to-go:

TJ’s Whole Wheat Bun (defrosted) with romaine, jalapenos, mustard , 2 kinds of leftover deli meat + avocado :

Yogurt (can’t get any easier to grab and go than yogurt!)

And cherries , which I only got through half of and had to finish at 9pm when we got out of lab:

Picnicking:

You know, when I have "lunch for dinner," as in a packed sandwich with sides, it always holds me over longer than when I have "dinner foods." Strange, but noteworthy.

WINE TIME!!!

I met Christy at Dean + Deluca where I get my favorite taste portions for a girls’ night since the husband is gone. I started with a taste of a Cabernet Franc:

I was hungry, and while dinner held me over well, it was still smallish, so we decided to get an appetizer. Nothing hits the spot like pita bread…and hummus

 this !
We split the pitas and feta cheese and had a 2-3 tbsp of the hummus.

Pour #2, a nice Merlot:

4 oz of wine is the perfect amount for me. Any more is too much; any less – unthinkable! Thanks to Christy for treating me to my glasses 🙂

It’s LATE!!!! And kinda scary here without my protective man in case there’s a roach or something. He’s camping and canoing with my dad tonight and tomorrow and meeting me in Hillsborough. My mom called and said not to rush in the morning so I have more time to get everything done. I’m driving home to spend the weekend with my family and my sister before she moves to Boston on Tuesday. We’re having a going away party on Saturday night, plus it’s Hog Day , the biggest BBQ Festival in the WORLD by attendance (I think it made it in the Guiness Book one year). I’m meeting NC blog readers Sarah and Jessica on Saturday too!! Gotta fit some studying in this weekend too 😥

Night all!

When I’m alone without the hubby, I always think about dumb scary movies! Especially the creepy girl from The Ring – I always freak thinking she is in the basement! LAME! 🙂

I had a 4 and a 1/2 hour titration lab on Wednesday and I still have to graph the ~500 points that MeasureNet gave me on a pH vs. volume plot. I hate titrations mostly because I’ve done so many and it’s just so mind-numbing… no excitement!

    Kath -you are great.
Feel free to avoid my advice ,but I strongly advise not to give out personal info such as when your partner is away and you are alone especially, but also when you two are away from your home for a period of time.Just not a safe blogging practise in my mind, especially since the blog is open for anyone in the world to read. Thanks for listening.
    Best wishes.

seriously, kath… be careful. we’ve seen pictures of the front of your house, we hear about which trails you run on near you house, we know you take the lightrail, etc etc. it wouldnt take too much hard work to figure out your location. i know we feel like a big happy community, but there are some creepers out there!! :O

I don’t really think women reading a food blog are going to stalk…I would have never thought about that but i guess there are weirdo’s out there! haha! I live in a single apartment and love being alone most nights bc you can sleep like a baby with no interruptions!

    Ah, the RING..!
I watched the Japanese version when it first came out (I was in gr.11 – a LONG time ago!) and I haven’t watched a single scary movie since! It literally kept me up all night for a good month. I’ve sworn off scary movies.

About the “stalking” I don’t think this little community has creepy ones yet, but I guess you never know. But then again, unless you’ve followed every single entry faithfully it’s kind of hard to stalk her. Hmm-

    Hi Kath and all!

I just love this blog for ideas…I’m really getting into cooking.

I just bought fresh basil and want to make a pesto but not a heavy kind…didn’t Kath make a Pesto a while back that she used as a spread on sandwhiches and stuff. This is what I want to do but on a panini of grilled veggies….any ideas how to make the pesto?

    Thanks all!

Sammypie, traditional pesto is made by griding 1 – 2 cups of packed basil leaves, around 1/4 cup of pine nuts and 1 – 2 garlic cloves in a food processor, then streaming in 1/2 to 1 cup of oil until smooth. Top it off by stirring in lots of grated parm cheese. If you want a healthier version, play with the amount of oil or even stream in a little chicken broth. The liquid is just there to help it bind together. You can also use less cheese; traditionally the cheese thickens it up, so just know you might have a slightly different consistency.

    sammypie,

I think I remember the pesto you’re talking about – it wasn’t a traditional pesto, Kath made it lighter.

I saved what she wrote because I thought it sounded good and wanted to make it myself:

    * Big handful basil (all I had left)
    * Handful spinach (to bulk up greens)
    * 2 tbsp or so of chopped walnuts (I prefer these to pine nuts in pesto)
    * 1 tbsp grated parmesan

Pulse together. Then add 1 tsp olive oil until blended into a paste.

    Hope that works!

Yikes, Beth, 1/2 – 1 cup of oil??? That is way more than you need…try a tablespoon or two, and then make up any extra liquid you need by using some vegetable stock. Tastes the same, I promise!!

I didn’t say I made it that way. Most traditional recipes call for that. I mentioned stock as well.

    Nutrients and Caitlin,
You are right about being cautious. I probably shouldn’t have said he was away. I’ve tried to never show the front of our house or mention our neighborhood (there are tons in walking distance from the lightrail) but I guess I could be more careful.

    Bev,
It’s the Charlotte Dean and Deluca Wine Room.
