Weekend with GB + P

Foodblog-5273

Guess who came to visit this weekend? Grammie Buzz and Pea! It was mom’s 60th birthday and she chose to spend it with her cute grandson.

Foodblog-5409

When they arrived on Thursday we all headed down to the park after nap. Lots of our friends were there to join us!

Foodblog-5274

Foodblog-5298

BFFs!

Foodblog-5286

Foodblog-5294

Mom’s birthday dinner came next. (Note the background game of chase between Mazen and Pea! Pea is also pleased that Mazen can say his name – Hi Pea! Bye-Bye Pea!)

Foodblog-5310

We served rosemary flank steak from The Organic Butcher

Foodblog-5313

Some of the best sweet potato fries we’ve ever made (thanks to a super long roast)

Foodblog-5312

And a green salad with some Flora Dutch gouda that my mom proclaimed was the best cheese she’s ever tasted!

Foodblog-5314

Foodblog-5315

Of course we had been looking forward to dessert for months!

Foodblog-5304

Two dozen Sweet Haus mini cupcakes!

Foodblog-5303

Lemon // Cookie Dough // Pistachio // Coconut // Carrot Cake // Almond

Foodblog-5306

Happy Birthday to you!

Foodblog-5320

Everybody loved them : )

Foodblog-5325

On Friday, after bowls of oatmeal, mom and I went to the gym together. We had Bodos bagels and salads for lunch.

After nap we packed up and headed to Jefferson Vineyards for the afternoon with our friends Sarah + Sylvia. They have lots of green space for running!

Foodblog-5334

Foodblog-5353

Foodblog-5338

A sharing dispute…

Foodblog-5336

But don’t worry, Mazen loves his “Saya”

Foodblog-

Friday evening Matt and I left the grandparents in charge and went out on a date!

Foodblog-5360

I made sure everything was all laid out before we left

Foodblog-5362

And then it was out on the town!

Foodblog-5365

We went to Brookville, a fabulously local restaurant

Foodblog-5372

This is my new favorite drink: The Buffalo Gold. It’s a mix of Foggy Ridge Cider Pippin Gold, Buffalo Trace bourbon, grenadine, ginger ale and a cherry. Sweet and bourbon-y! I actually found the recipe here!

Foodblog-5363

Matt got the most neon Saison ever!

Foodblog-5368

Foodblog-5369

We had the perfect window table for people watching!

Foodblog-5383

We love that Brookville offers a 3-courses-for-$36 option, so we flew with that for the evening. Surprise us chef!

Foodblog-5366

We were first served an amuse of bacon fat popcorn. Whoa was this good…and perfectly salted! Brookville has a thing for bacon : )

Foodblog-5381

Next up: Manakintowne Chive & Gouda Fritters

Foodblog-5384

Perfectly crunchy!

Foodblog-5386

Our second small plate was Woodson’s Mill Grits, Slow Cooked Egg, Greens and Mushrooms

Foodblog-5387

Loved the drippy egg, and Woodson’s Mill grits are just incredible.

Foodblog-5391

And finally – the House Seasoned Fried Chicken, Bacon Waffle, Fried Egg, Frisee, Kim Kim & Maple Syrup. SO good!

Foodblog-5394

We left too full for another round or dessert. ‘Twas a delicious night!

Mom and Dad left on Saturday morning, and we ended the weekend with a cookout at our neighbor’s house.

Sunday I played a whole 90 minute soccer game that we sadly lost.

We went from 70* on Saturday eating outside to cold and rainy on Sunday. When will spring ever be here to stay!?

What a fun filled weekend!!! And so nice that your parents were able to babysit for you and Matt (and nice for them to be able to spend some time with their grandson too, I’m sure!) 😀

And there’s just something about the outdoor pictures that make me deliciously happy. Maybe it’s the reminder that spring is on the way and New England will be seeing grass soon too!! 😉

I’ve realized I’ve reached the point where I can no longer keep grits on hand that aren’t Woodson Mills. I’m totally hooked. Grits have long been my comfort food, but those are just oh my.

The rosemary flank steak looks wonderful – I want that for dinner tonight!!!!

I’m still so envious of your beautiful weather – the kiddos don’t know how lucky they are to be able to prance around outside. It was 11 when I left for work this morning. I’m ready for 50 degree weather – let alone 60s or 70s. 🙂

Ahh I was JUST saying I wanted to go back to Brookville soon, and now I think it’s on the list for this weekend. I love that popcorn, and the hot sauce on the chicken and waffles is SO good. I tried Zin Burger last night- YUM!! I can’t say it necessarily beats Citizen, but it’s way closer to us, so it’s definitely a good option to have.

I gave bacon up for lent, but purposely kept bacon fat on the rotation. I need that popcorn. I have a mild obsession with truffle oil on my popcorn so I know bacon fat popcorn would make me happy too!

Looks like a fun weekend. Mazen is such a cutie pie! But has he been feeling ok? I’m only asking because his cheeks are so red – my son developed similar red blotches on his cheeks and it turned out to be a parvovirus colloquially called “slapped cheek disease.” It’s not particularly dangerous, but if Mazen has it too, he might start feeling pretty unwell, cranky, feverish and dehydrated if it goes untreated. I hope it’s not the case.

They were worse than ever last week. We just went to the doctor and she chalked it up to teething + cold winter air. (He has gotten 7 teeth in the past 2 months.) I slather on Aquaphor religiously now. He’s feeling fine otherwise! It’s actually MUCH better this week.

We coat them in olive oil, cinnamon, cayenne and salt and then roast on a cooling rack (like this one) for about an hour at 400*. 45 minutes at least.

Aw, I love that Mazen calls his friend Saya!! My name is Sara, and my brother, who is 18 months older than me, couldn’t pronounce the R in my name when I was a baby and also called me Saya! The rest of my family called me “Say” as a nickname to my brother’s mispronunciation and a couple of them still call me that, even as a 32 year old! That’s so cute to see another little one calling a Sara (or Sarah in this case!) Saya! 🙂
