Weekend!

Exclamation point because it was a great one! Great weather and Mother’s Day fun!

We kicked things off with a hot & sweaty run. Warm weather = exercise motivator!

Foodblog-120053

Then we packed up a picnic and headed down to Fridays After Five. It’s family central – kiddos everywhere!

Foodblog-184401

I recently bought this blanket for all the picnicking we’ve been doing. It folds up into a nice travel pack with a strap and has a water-resistant bottom. Like!

Foodblog-184358

We packed a pesto pasta salad with cilantro pesto, whole wheat penne, spinach, walnuts, zucchini and asparagus that I made earlier in the day.

Foodblog-174844

Also snacked on a few munchies our friends brought.

Sweethaus, my favorite cupcake shop, now has a FOOD TRUCK! This is Tara. She’s one of the owners, and she’s awesome. [She was in the middle of talking to Mazen!]

Foodblog-190223

I tried the new lemon cupcake and loved it. The buttercream was so light and fluffy – and you guessed right…I didn’t make it back to my blanket before taking a bite

Smile this !

Foodblog-184348

On Saturday morning we got up bright and early (like we do everyday….) and headed to the city market to meet Matt.

Mazen loved to watch Bud play his banjo!

Foodblog-

Want to make friends? Stroll around a market with a kale shirt and a baby. I must have talked to 26 new people!

The No Bull Burger ladies always have to get a squeeze in with Mr. M! He sampled some of the lentils from their burger – baby approved. [He also started feeding himself overnight!]

Foodblog-120836

For breakfast I had coffee, a little green smoothie I had leftover in my fridge and this Cinnamon Pecan scone. I don’t just pick a random baked good and dig in very often (because I’m obsessed with breakfasts at home), and I enjoyed this mindfully with every bite.

Foodblog-082230

We went home for morning nap and actually went back to the market for more walking exercise later in the day. I ended up having a No Bull Burger for lunch on two slices of Cville Crunch from our booth. This totally hit the spot!

Foodblog-120746

Washed down with a cup of Nugget’s Raw Kombucha – the new mint flavor!

Foodblog-120323

Saturday ended with this awesome pizza made by Matt

Foodblog-6006

Sauce, smoked gouda, sun-dried tomatoes and tomato sauce.

Foodblog-6008

Served with a simple side salad

Foodblog-6012

The baby was in bed, so we celebrated parent-style.

Foodblog-6013

On Sunday I woke up to a card and some Girls Day Out earrings ( <— from the market…love everything she makes!) from my boys.

Foodblog-193719

Matt painted the bird on the front, and Mazen wrote me a special note:

Foodblog-193729

We were invited to a brunch at 10, so we kept breakfast light. I got 20 minutes of extra sleep and then was delivered breakfast in bed:

Foodblog-6018

Yogurt and strawberry parfaits with chopped almonds and mint!

Foodblog-071203

After that I headed to the gym for a quick workout while the boys napped and then quickly showered so we could all enjoy this wonderful spread! Quiche by Matt plus smoked salmon, bacon, mangos, fruit and bagels. And mimosas!

Foodblog-103052

Best brunch ever.

Foodblog-104007

M was the cutest playing on a blanket. He loves musical instruments. I must buy him some! We had a lovely time outside despite the chilly temps.

Foodblog-104015

We had lots of fun family time on Sunday afternoon:

Foodblog-175839

<3 this little guy who made me a mama! Sometimes I still don’t even believe I’m a mom. I told someone recently “I have an 8 month old son” and it was a bit surreal.

Foodblog-180021

I also went shopping – to World Market. I bought this new wallet (I’m very picky about my wallet and this one had all the right compartments), a table runner for our dining room and some blue jars.

Foodblog-193447Foodblog-193425

Sunday evening we attended our neighborhood association’s spring picnic. Nothin’ like a potluck!!

Foodblog-172625

Foodblog-172617

Especially the dessert table…

Foodblog-175246

Happy Belated Mother’s Day to you all. My mom is actually here visiting right now!

I like your comment about making new friends by carrying around a baby and wearing a kale shirt. Probably very, very true – especially about the baby part. I think women can smell a baby from miles away. 😉

Looks like wonderful weather for you guys, I love your trips to the park and all the wonderful eats. Any time I see brunch food I get excited – my favorite thing!!

I just bought a fold-up picnic blanket too, I’m keeping it in my car so it’ll be easy for us to picnic more this summer. And I LOVE the bird card, Matt is an incredibly talented artist! I had a cup of that Kombucha when I was in Charlottesville, it was the best I’ve ever had. I’m making my own now and I can’t get it anywhere near as light and tasty as Nuggets!

Happy belated first Mother’s Day! Looks like it was a good one!

I have totally been snapping the red straps from the B.O.B stroller together like you to string along his toys. Genius. They don’t get thrown out of the stroller and keeps them entertained.

We have but we want to avoid turning into a restaurant since we’re primarily a bakery. I agree it would be really fun but probably not the best decision for us right now.

Yes, EMK t-shirts are such a conversation starter, esp. at farmer’s markets! Love the softer, more feminine fitting shirts he’s using these days too.

I’m loving that picture of you and your 8 month old ‘bean’ in your blue shirts…you both look so beautiful and joyful! And, gosh he sure is looking so grown up suddenly!

I’ve been meaning to give a shout out to your mom re. the tribute she wrote to you on Mother’s Day…it was so moving and well written. (Still can’t figure out that cumbersome posting procedure…grrr!)

Happy hump day, and have fun visiting with Mama Kerf!

I love that picnic blanket. Since here in Germany we have developed grilling/picnicking culture, they are very popular, but still a bit pricey. The nice ones are at least 15 euros, so I will wait a month or two for the sales to start

Hey Kath! This is totally unrelated to your post, but I don’t know if you’ve seen this article in the NY Times by Michael Pollan “Some of My Best Friends Are Germs/Say Hello to the 100 Trillion Bacteria that Make Up Your Microbiome.” I’m an RD and a liberal arts major (anthropology) and mama to a 15 month old, and I found it sooo interesting, and I think you would too!
