You are here: Home / Weekend / Weekend.

November 17, 2014

Weekend.

Did it turn as cold in your neighborhood at is it did in mind? BRRR!! It’s definitely time for some holiday music to counter balance this dreary freezing weather. I know some of you have seen snow already this year, and I have one thing to say: I’m sorry!

Foodblog-37-2

Our weekend started off somewhat hot and steamy – in a Friday night workout class at the gym! Chris led a challenging version of his usual strength class that left me sweating (which is saying a lot for me + weight lifting!) I used 20 and 25lb kettlebells and felt pretty burned out by the end.

Foodblog-37 this !

Foodblog-20-2

Wine, Great Harvest sandwiches and cookies finished off the evening happy hour!

Foodblog-20

Saturday morning I had a leftover pumpkin pancake with peanut butter and a couple of scrambled eggs for breakfast. We are low on fruit – this weekend was particularly low in fruits and veggies, unfortunately.

Foodblog-3570

Matt was working the farmer’s market, so Mazen and I went on an adventure to find him!

Foodblog-02

The highlight of Mazen’s morning was getting to “drive” the truck

Foodblog-41

I promise you that sitting in the truck for 20 minutes was not the highlight of my day : )

Foodblog-41-2

After the market we went to the Discovery Museum.

Foodblog-16

M loved playing bakery (how appropriate!) Although he definitely thought the cash register was a toaster oven (also appropriate!)

Foodblog-16-2

I came home and was pumped up about the broccoli soup I had on my mind. I put garlic, carrots, peppers and broccoli in a pot with some broth, let is simmer a bit, added some half and half and then 2 cups of sharp cheddar cheese.

Foodblog-3579

And then something went terribly wrong. One of my dairy components curdled – I think it was the cheese given the timing. It also could have been the crème fraîche I used for a garnish, but I’ll never know. The soup tasted great, but the recipe was not blog worthy.

Foodblog-3588

After a trio of naps, we headed deep into the country for a chili dinner at our friend’s house.

Foodblog-3595

Beers for the adults, and trampolines for the kiddos.

Foodblog-3598

We had two kinds of yummy chili plus cornbread and some wine.

Foodblog-3602

And s’mores for dessert!

Foodblog-3605

Sunday morning we had small breakfasts in anticipation of brunch. Coffee + an egg and jam sandwich on a Virginia roll.

Foodblog-3609

We all went to the gym where I squeezed in 30 minutes of stair climbing before showering and meeting KK at Brookville for brunch!

Foodblog-3616

Everything Chef Harrison does is top notch – the above cornbread included!!

Foodblog-3617

I ordered a sandwich made with pancakes (OMG!) with egg, bacon and gouda. TOP NOTCH, I tell ya!! I brought some home for tomorrow.

Foodblog-3619

But the real kicker was MBF Pancake (aka my big fat pancake) that was literally the size of my head!! It must have been made in a cast iron skillet – that’s a dinner plate folks! Chef sent it out to us gratis, and I’m so glad he did because I’m ready to go back next weekend : )

Foodblog-3622

After all the pancakes, Karen and I took Mazen to the grocery store and stocked up on kale.

Later in the afternoon I met my soccer team for an end-of-season party at South Street Brewery.

Foodblog-15

And then we ate curdled broccoli soup for dinner Winking smile It tasted good – I promise!

A sandwich made with pancakes? Sign me up!!

I still can’t believe I’ve never made pumpkin pancakes before. My recipe folder is STUFFED with so many different variations that there’s no excuse. I need to do it!

If you think NC is cold, you should come to WI. I don’t know what’s going on but it’s just way too cold for this time of year!

Just curious – how do you guys always get free stuff from the kitchens at restaurants? Do you know the chef, or do you tell them you’re a blogger and will be blogging about your meal?

The pancakes look delish, by the way!

Another weekend full of good eats! We got a beautiful blanket of snow this morning and the Mr took off work so we can go out and play in it after seeing a movie.

Bummer about the soup. I’m always so disappointed when I want a recipe to be blog worthy and then it flops! Glad it still tasted good.

I love soups this time of year!! I made a homemade chicken broth on Sunday and used it to make a chicken, brown rice and veggie soup! I love curling up on the couch this time of year with the warmth!

Hahaha, did it turn cold in my neighborhood? You could say that. -20 one day last week. But only 3 inches of snow. I’ll take extreme cold with blue skies over moderate cold and gray skies any day!

It hasn’t gotten too cold here yet, but I’m worried for snow in Chicago when I visit for the holidays.

Combo of getting the half and half too hot and aged cheese or harder cheeses wont melt- they just split into grease and milk solids. You need a young soft melty cheese.
Between the two that’s what did it.
You could blend the split soup together with some bread crumbs or white beans to make it all come back together and be smooth again.

You added the dairy into a hot mixture too quickly…that’s what causes it to break.

Those pancakes look amazing! Pancakes are one of my all-time favorite foods! Sadly, it was below zero for many days in a row here in Boulder last week. On Saturday it was freezing outside and snowing, so I spent it curled up on my couch with the fireplace on, a glass of Moscato, and the movie Bridesmaids 🙂

Adding in cheese in a large amount will cause it to “curdle” that may have been what went wrong. My cousin was making broccoli cheddar soup and send me a similar photo and that was what she did wrong.

Too bad the broccoli soup didn’t turn out quite right! It can get so finicky when you add dairy!

Mazen in the truck – aaaawwwww.

Also, I’m now definitely in need of some pancakes 😀

Looks like a great weekend! Love the idea of broccoli cheddar soup- I’ve been craving that for the past few weeks and have yet to make it! PS- if that’s the same museum- we used to go to the same one when I was a kid! Loved the Discovery Museum and playing grocery store 🙂

That pancake looks so good. Sorry to hear about your soup — you can also avoid the curdling by making a roux and béchamel thinned gradually with broth, adding the cheese gradually as well. This is my favorite method because the soup ends up so velvety. I do the same to make mac and cheese (no broth, obviously).

Love the black puffer jacket – where’s it from? I fell in love with mine last winter as it had all the right components (including a hood!) but it was maternity and feel odd wearing a maternity coat this year.
