      Diana,
There seem to be two kinds of people in the world: those who prefer carb-y breakfasts and those who like savory eggs, veggies, and things. I’m definitely in the card group – in fact, most of the time eggs sound horrible to me first thing in the morning but I love them for lunch and dinner! I do eat them on occasion, but most of my breakfasts revolve around oats or whole grains.

I have read your blog for several months and really enjoy it. I like it because the meals are fairly simple, there is a variety of foods, and yet healthy. My question is, I would like to loose some weight and I know you are a R.D. – any recomendations besides the obvious (sugar, fat, junk)… Would you jump start and do South Beach, would you eliminate certain things? I tried to write down all I eat, but that is a pain in the neck. I am a pre-diabetic and this is the year I want to become healthy and fit – I’ll be 60… Thank you so much for any input – I appreciate it and don’t want to take too much of your time. Have a nice weekend!

      Hey Susan,
I would definitely not recommend any diets out there – with maybe the exception of Weight Watchers because it doesn’t eliminate food groups. My recommendations would be:

Cut way back on sugar and desserts – have them only at special occasions or ‘worth it’ times
Cut way back on alcohol – same criteria as desserts
Get rid of/donate the junk food in your house if it’s tempting you (it will either be waste or waist!)
Move for an hour everyday – this can be walking in short 10 minute sessions or more intense gym sessions
Focus on the quality of foods you eat – eat real food! Choose an apple and almonds over a Clif bar or a piece of quality dark chocolate over a cup of fat-free ice cream.
Eat veggies at every lunch and dinner (and consider reading the book Superfoods HealthStyle
Sip water, tea and seltzer – use milk and juice (and alcohol and sodas!) sparingly
Have a protein, carb and fat at every meal/snack
Create a flexible meal plan and do a bit of prep on the weekends if you’re very busy
Stock your fridge with your favorite whole foods

      Good luck!

      January 13, 2012 at 11:34 pm

      Sure!

Coach’s Oats are steel cut oats that have been cracked so they cook up super fast. They have the hearty texture of steel cut but the cooking time of rolled. http://coachsoats.com/

Cookie butter is a Trader Joe’s product that is like a peanut butter but tastes like gingerbread cookies. It was inspired by Specloos aka Biscoff spreads. It’s not a health food, but it is incredibly delicious. Think chocolate ganache texture.

I’m not sure anyone will see this or not, hopefully. I am interested in using mason jars to make the overnight oatmeal in the mornings (brilliant idea btw) i was wondering though, i’ve never used mason jars before. i’m reading about sterilizing them, is that necessary if i plan on just using them to make overnight oatmeal? or is that only for people that are canning/preserving food for a period of time?

obviously, i’ll give them a good rinse with soap and hot water before using them, but just curious if that extra step of sterilization is necessary.

stupid question i know. thanks for any feedback

If you’re just using them like a bowl, washing properly or dishwashering should be just fine. If you’re going to can or jam in them, you do want to sterilize.
