Tidbits

It’s been a busy morning full of tidbits. Both research and samples!

I love conferences. Concentrating research and information into one super day of learning. We listened on presentations about the latest in bariatric surgery, vitamin D research and childhood obesity. Very cool stuff.

The profssor who presented on vitamin D shared with us that between October through May, north of Atlanta there is virtually ZERO vit D synthesis going on. And even in the summer, almost all of the synthesis takes place between 11a and 2p. Its a misinception that stepping into sunlight quickly replenishes stores. That 4p walk in January isn’t really doing any good at all! I had no idea.

I got a chair massage in between sessions but the YOGA stretch did sooo much more!! Gosh I love how yoga makes my muscles and joints feel. (Cant wait for Saturday’s session!!)

this !

I talked to a few vendors, including The Thoughtful Baker, who makes allergen-free products.

Sampled a few and a Cabot cheese for
Elevensies. I was hungry much earlier without my usual size breakfast!

Lunch was a nice spread of tasty choices:

I choose a really delicious half veggie and hummus wrap! It was awesome and super flavorful. And no onions!

Also had a great sweet carrot salad, an herby potato salad and some homemade terra chips! Plus a tiny apple for dessert (skipped the cookies!)

Might go back for another scoop of those root veggie chips cause I’m still a wee bit hungry!

Hope you’re having a great day!

Your lunch looks very balanced and tasty! I love root veggie chips. In fact…I love ALL chips. Popchips, sunchips, kettle cooked potato chips – all things in moderation, right?

i can’t get on the reduced fat cheese bandwagon. it makes me sad. skim milk i like, nonfat yogurt is great, but i need fatty fatty cheese. to each his own, though!

And that is super interesting about the Vit. D!! I had no idea. Amazing how such of a large misconception that is. I am super jealous of all that you learning, sounds reallly intriguing! Especially the childhood obesity. That is something that I’m really passionate about after working with kids. It’s SO awful for a child to have weight problems. Talk about psychological effects..

Isn’t that Vitamin D thing funny? I live in the Pacific Northwest (zilch sun except the summer) and my mom’s doctor just told her that our entire family needs to be taking supplements because of the lack of rays. We were all really surprised!

Thanks for the info, as usual. It’s interesting that Vitamin D has rocked the news lately in surpassing Vitamin C!

Kath, what do you typically do when you’re sick with the flu? I mean, a while back you had a cold and made sure to eat lots of supplements and go easy on the exercise.
But what about the flu flu; sore tummy but not throwing up, and tired and feverish.
Is it best not to eat at all or just as your stomach dictates (with gurgles)?
Should I try to push it or eat regular amounts?
Sometimes when I’m sick I crave to eat but not sure if its the best.

ALso, is it normal to be very hungry when the flu is past, like a weight-restoration thing?

Finally, when one has the flu, is that a sign that your body is trying to “clean itself out” and therefore its best not to eat?

    🙂 Thanks!

      Lana-
When your body has the flu it means that a virus is proliferating in your body making you sick. Your body is not trying to clean itself out- it is trying to produce more white blood cells to destroy the virus. During this time it is best to drink lots of fluids and pay attention and listen to your body. It is probably better to discuss this issue with your doctor.

I really just wanted to clarify that sickness due to pathogens, such as the flu, is not a method to “clean-out” your body. Your body does not want to be sick and works hard to produce an immune response to make you well again.

(I posted this here after putting it at the end)

Thank you SOOO much for that reply, Melissa.
That really clarifies things and helps me as I think of how to help my body heal.
I’ve tried to listen to my body and not think of it as working against itself. 🙂
Your thoughtful response was a blessing.
        Lana.

        ps – Kath, I understand. 😉
