Thumb Rest Day

Hi Guys! No idea why my thumb is aching (well, I kind of do – I think it’s keyboard overuse!) but I’m going to listen to my body ๐Ÿ™‚ and give him a rest day. I’m going to take a break from typing once I get through this post and questions. I’ll just keep the commentary to the minimum and let the photos say 1,000 words ๐Ÿ˜‰

Spinning

Went to my Friday spinning class – the husband came too! For the first time since Octoberish I felt HOT. Like, really sweaty and hot. I LOVED it. I definitely worked harder than I do when I wear pants and long sleeves and am cold from those annoying fans that other riders feel they have to have on or they will die! It was also really easy to get out of bed this morning because I wasn’t cold. Those of you new to morning exercise, getting up in the summer when the sun is coming up when you are is a piece of cake!

I had an oat bran pancake with PB&J and some grapes before I left –

Breakfast

Classic Kath Oats today!! I put my tsp of brown sugar on the top rather than mixing it in and it was so much better. It melted into this caramel liquid. Like the nut butters, you get such a more concentrated flavor if you leave it on top than mixing it in where it gets lost in the oats. I don’t use brown sugar every day, but today I was in the mood and this bowl of oatmeal was just amazing on my palate. Mmmmmmm!

With mint tea –

Breakfast today was about 460 kcal, 9 grams fiber and 15 grams protein.

Today

I’ve got a Chem test this morning ๐Ÿ˜ฏ and then a quick Physio and I’m done. I’m thinking about going to EarthFare for the amazing salad bar for lunch but that will depend on the weather. I might take my computer and study there for a while so I can come home to the weekend. We shall see what the weather is doing at 12!

Ciao!

Rest your thumb, Kath!! Your photographs are so wonderful, so they really DO say it all :0)

Always love to see the “Classic Kath Oatmeal” – it’s a perfect combination of flavors!

Best of luck on your chemistry test; and try to fully enjoy your Friday, despite the weather!!

we have the same weather 2 hrs east — i have to admit i kind of enjoy the rainy days as well as the gorgeous sun we had yesterday! fun to hole up and feel all cozy . . .

also i cannot ever imagine being cold in spin class! well, maybe when first walking in, but to me spin class is the sweatiest workout there is, hands down. to the point where it freaks me out how much sweat can actually be produced within an hour. and i have trained for marathons in the NC summers!

hope you have a great day today kath! rest up that thumb ๐Ÿ™‚

I can relate to your thumb problem. Mine has been giving me troubles ever since midterms and essay season has set in. Good choice to listen to your body! I should definitely do the same.

Hi Kath – Yum – caramelized brown sugar! I hear you about hating the fans in spinning!!! It’s always freezing in there and for some reason I always get stuck next to someone who adjusts the fan to hit them directly! Hope you get to get a trip in to EarthFare! And good luck on the test ๐Ÿ™‚

    Kath,

Acutally, what I meant was not what was true lemon’s website, but how in general do you learn about products like that. Is there a specific website that you check. For example, I check yours daily. Thanks and have a good weekend- you deserve it!

I’m not sure about kath, but I actually learned about “True Lemon” on a Jet Blue flight, ha! I asked for seltzer water and a wedge of lemon…and she told me that they use “True Lemon”…longer shelf life of course ๐Ÿ™‚ It’s really a great, portable way to add a little zing to water..and pretty easy to find. I’ve actually seen it in our local Walgreens. I recommend it!

Just wanted to say that I tried adding banana to my morning oatmeal for the first time and it was AMAZING. I only eat bananas by themselves (raw) or occasionally on top of a bowl of cereal; I cannot stand the taste in smoothies, desserts, etc. But I was inspired by the photos of marshmallow and whipped banana oatmeal yesterday. I made it the marshmallow way and it was SO GOOD. I’ll definitely be doing this more often (but probably not every day because the bananas were soooooo sweet, almost like candy!)

Hey Kath and others- I just want to say that I tried making my first bowl of REAL oatmeal last night…and it was FANTASTIC!!! Thank you Kath and others who encouraged me to try the real stuff.

Just a question- I usually don’t have berries on hand during the winter months (too expensive) so has anyone ever tried mixing a bit of reduced sugar jam into their oatmeal? I thought this might be tasty but not sure.

I’m a big fan of oatmeal too. I had a nice bowl with apples, cinnamon, flax, and hazelnuts.
One of my favorite mixtures is blueberries with pecans. In the winter months, I use frozen berries, which I thaw really quickly in the microwave for about 25 seconds. Trader Joe’s has a great frozen berry selection. My favorite are the tiny wild blue berries.

I think the jam would work well too — I do this for my plain yogurt, but I really like the texture of berries in my oatmeal!

Julia – I’m sure jam would taste great, but in the winter months I would suggest buying frozen berries – that’s how I’ve been getting mine in daily since I don’t want to pay the high prices right now.

Helloo, just wondering about how many walnuts do you usually use to crumble up onto your oatmeal in the mornings?
i’ve gotten very reliant on them as a staple in my morning meals… you’re right, they definitely do keep you full longer! i’ve even been adding them to my cold cereal…. adds a delicious (and filling) touch.

I am one of those “heavy sweaters” too…I think it’s genetic, because my dad and brother sweat just sitting there if it’s above 60 degrees outside! I seriously start dripping sweat about a mere 8 minutes into running on a treadmill inside the gym. By the time I’m 15-20 minutes into my run, I usually have to peel off even my tank top and go down to the sports bra or I feel like I’m going to burn up! It’s ridiculous, and I have no good solutions for this problem, I just want the other sweaters out there to know they are not alone. And I even have to wear a tank top and shorts in the dead of winter at the gym for weight lifting, too, otherwise I over heat. I look at all the people working out in sweats and just looking at them makes me want to pass out from a heat stroke!

I definitely need the fans in Spinning! I’m hot and sweaty like, 2 songs in! I was sad to miss my usual 9:45 class this morning, but we were stuck at home waiting for some workmen to show up. Hoping to go to the gym this afternoon after my little girl’s nap.

Is anyone else getting hit by the big snow storm making its way up to Ontario? We’re due to get it tonight…supposed to get another 20-30 cm! The only thing I am looking forward to is moving the clocks ahead this weekend…it will start getting lighter outside at night! yippee ๐Ÿ™‚

Im in KY and we are supposed to get a big snow storm tonight…even though it was 70 degrees here Monday! Our weather is so unpredictable and I can’t wait until spring. I’m sick of the cold…
    – about sweating when working out- I rarely sweat. Maybe only a little bit on my face when I run or do the ET but thats it…i wish I did though bc I feel like I work harder when I sweat ! haha! I think it’s totally genetic and bc I’m usually always cold. the only time I am ever really warm is in 90 degree weather or when I drink too much! haha

p.s. Does anyone know how to keep avocados from getting brown? I ate 1/3 avocado for lunch and want to save the rest for the husband’s dinner. I left the skin on, hoping that will help? Thanks in advance for anyone’s advice! ๐Ÿ™‚

    Re. Spinning + Fans,

I do sweat a lot during cycle, but I don’t want freezing cold air blown on me while I’m sweating because then I’m wet and cold. I’m fine in the middle of class, but the second my heart rate drops I get cold. Brrrr!!

    Susan,
I just read a lot – magazines, websites, blogs – and learn about new products.

    Mel,
Spring Break starts the 15th. My parents are coming down the weekend that it starts and we’re going to a Breast Cancer dinner and then my mom is staying here with me for 2 days. I’ve been trying to get her to visit for months now but she’s scared to drive down by herself and since my dad is coming for the weekend he’s leaving her here and I’m taking her back halfway on Tuesday. We’re going to shop, dine and workout together! Then I’m going to relax for 5 days straight (and finish my Niger project ๐Ÿ™‚ )

    Julia,
Your first bowl – CONGRATS!!! I second frozen berries. Just be sure to thaw them separately and drain all that juice – it does water down oatmeal. (Some people just toss the berries in frozen but I don’t like it that watery!)

    AA,
I’m pretty sure the honey wheat was 75 kcal per oz. Most of his wheat-based breads are.

    Eli,
I use about 10 grams, which is about 2 level spoonfuls on a normal spoon.

    Emma,
    Shredded pear sounds delicious!

    Molly,
That omelet sounds AMAZING! Squash – mushrooms – honey – walnuts!?!? I gotta put that on my to-do list!

    Polly,
    Definitely blogitis ๐Ÿ™‚
