Summer Fun

The pool was fun! We only stayed about 2 hours, but we had a fun picnic and I got lots of reading in. This book is quite interesting, although I wouldn’t want to read it again (and am not sure if I want to read more by her, unless they are in a more pleasant setting!)

I packed awesome smoked salmon sandwiches again! This time with avocado, cucumber, capers, and a little bit of bleu cheese – plus spinach. Here it is being assembled –

And then having lots of fun being eaten by the pool!

DSC01395

I also packed two sweet watermelon triangles (the only way it should be eaten so as to not get it all over your face or have to use a knife and fork)

DSC01393

And some kashi crackers , just because I have fond memories of eating crunchy things like Pringles and Cheez-Its by the pool when I was little.

With 2 waters –

I had no intention of basking in the sun, so we picked a nice shady spot under a HUUUGE umbrella to read. It did get hot after a while and we went splashing! I love being in pools with the husband because he picks me up and floats me around and I feel so small in his arms. Go ahead, roll your eyes

 this !

But we gave our shady spot to a hungry family so we only had lounge chairs in the sun after our swim. We did about 20 minutes of reading before I felt like I was burning and we headed home –

The Furry Ape, a.k.a. Kanzi (that’s really what I call him ALL THE TIME and my whole family and my friends: Kanz. Because he can do a great ape impression and is, well, quite hairy! Our wedding vows was the first time in 7 years I’ve called him Matt! Also why I prefer to call him "the husband" instead of Matt in writing. And my nickname – from middle school – is Koops and that’s all he calls me. We’re strange, I know).

Off to prepare for our cookout ! We’re hosting some of the husband’s colleagues for burgers on the grill .

No eye rolling! I once heard a great joke from a comedian who said pools are perfect for relationships: men feel REALLY strong, and women feel REALLY lightweight and skinny. Perfect! 😀

Love your big hat. I live under hats in the summer because of the hyperpigmentation (crazy freckles) on my face. 85 SPF and a big hat… So, with the salmon, does it spoil easily? Do you have to keep it cold when your travel with it, i.e. take to the pool? I’d be the only one eating it at home. I think I would like it better if I steamed some and flaked it like packed tuna. Not sure if I’d like the smoked type.

    Fun day!

Stick with Jodi Picoult…she’s a fabulous writer, smart, and always writes about topics that are current and salient. I’ve met her, too, and she’s a very cool woman.

Cheers to sunscreen, shade, and umbrellas!

My husband and I don’t call each other by our names (never really have), and when we do it sounds really weird. We call each other ‘honey’.

Sounds like a fun day. I have yet to spend a day by a pool this summer…it doesn’t officially seem like summer until I do that!

lol those nicknames are so cute!

What type of books do you usually enjoy reading? I find it hard for me to read really heavy books; I prefer more easy reads.

Do you have any suggestions (Kath or anyone else)?

    yadi ,
It’s no different than a deli meat sandwich – but we did bring them in a cooler.

    Ashley ,
Kanz comes from freshman year Psych class (and his hair), Koops comes from a language I had in 6th grade where my name because Kootherine. You can imagine the evolution from there. It just stuck with me through college. Even my profs called me Koops.

    Donna ,
    Thanks!

    yaz ,
Haha, I don’t think you’re a loser – I’m the same way with all the other food blogs. I love hearing about lifestyles too 🙂

    BC ,
Allergic to melons!? I’ve never heard of that. Hope you can eat lots of berries instead.

    lara ,
I love romance and anything with a page-turned plot (but not necessarily murder/mystery types – more the Harry Potter page-turner type!). My favorite book is Ahab’s Wife by Sena Naslund.

Looks like an enjoyable day! I need to get out to the pool SOMETIME this summer…

Nice to see that another couple calls each other nicknames – my boyfriend and I call each other “Hubie” (that’s me) and Hardy (that’s him) based on our last names…. I wonder what will happen when we get married? Hum… Anyway, you guys are super cute! Glad you got some time to relax today!

Oh I am not a fan of Jodi Picoult – I mean, if you haven’t read My Sister’s Keeper yet then you have to read that one… other than that, I find them too slow and law&ordery for me.

If you like romance but not the cheesy kind – Anita Shreve is really good!

You look great in your bathing suit! It looks like a lot of fun by the pool, I’ll have to go hang out at the pool at my sports club when I get home.
