Solitude

IMG_4465-2Blog

It’s quite lonely around here! Just me, Kanz, El Tigre and some camel crickets in the basement.

Afternoon snacks included Cville Cluster

IMG_4456-2Blog

2 wedges from an authentic daily orange (!)

IMG_4455-2Blog

And the difficult decision between dog treat and 2-day-old Savannah bar. I chose the Savannah, which was still quite amazing despite being a little goopy in its package (FYI, this was in our donate pile not from the counter)

IMG_4461-2Blog

I am not doing a great job bringing quality afternoon snacks to the bakery! Since we eat dinner late now, I usually do need a snack, but bread and sugary sweets – no matter how ‘real food’ they are – are getting old! I love my milky raspberry snacks, but I also need to stock up on some trail mix, fresh fruit, yogurts and the like. The #1 reason my snack quality has suffered? I haven’t been to the grocery store in 3 weeks!! We’ve been suriving off of bakery pasture eggs, bakery organic milk, bakery local cucs and peppers, bakery frozen berries + bananas, bakery bread, 3-week-going yogurt, pantry staples, garden veggies, Karen, and dinners out. Don’t ask me how! I think I’m going to go to Whole Foods tomorrow…

Tonight we whipped up a quick dinner and we’ve been chilling out at our respective computers ever since

IMG_4468-2Blog

The highlight: Twin Oaks More Than Tofu Spicy Thai with Quinoa and Amranth. This was a freebie from Benji at Twin Oaks and it was quite delicious!!

IMG_4464-2Blog

Ingredient #2 – Back to the Roots Mushroom Farm #2. The company sent me a second one as a thank you so I got to a’growin’! They just poofed white sperm dust onto my table, so I know they’re ready for eating (that’s how you tell – kinda gross!)

IMG_4462-2Blog

We sauteed the tofu, shrooms and some leftover eggplant together

IMG_4477-2Blog

Along with a side of garden greens, basil and bleu cheese. Flavorings included Liquid Smoke, Worcestershire and red pepper flakes. And salt and pepper. ALWAYS salt and pepper!

IMG_4473-2BlogIMG_4471-2BlogIMG_4476-2Blog

Beverage of the evening: Cascal. I love these!

IMG_4474-2Blog IMG_4470-2BlogIMG_4466-2Blog

Have a cozy night!

Fermented natural soda! Interesting.. do they have a similar taste to fermented tea?

And wowzer… 3 weeks without a grocery store stop! I could never do that. I legit buy only what is needed for the week – and don’t really have other sources if that runs out!

I am struggling with the very same snack dilemma at my job right now. Working as a teacher the kids are partial to granola bars and juice boxes and as much as Kashi bars do a good job of keeping me going…I need to find a snack that includes more veggies, protein and healthy fats. Somehow I just don’t get that creative at 6 in the morning… 😉

pack baggies on sundays, make enough for the week ahead and then you can just grab them in the mornings!! you could do bagged carrots, snap peas, cucumbers, mini cheese cubes, some mixed nuts!

Ditto! Or if I’m reallllly lazy, I’ll pick up a giant salad and cut-up veggies from the store. Then I can just “pop the top” and put it in my own container to snack on. I know it’s more expensive…but honestly when your busy or stressed out – you just have to do the best you can at the time.

“Have a cozy night” – yes! – the temp’s have dropped here big-time from our “heat wave”. It’s still ‘warm’ but it feels downright chilly compared to what it was. Are you still reading your book?

So my brother called tonight and let me know he and his girlfriend are taking a jaunt to Charlottsville in two weeks! The first thing I told him was that I was jealous. The second was that he needs to visit Great Harvest, say hello to you, and bring me back some goodies. He thought I was kidding, but I made it very, very clear that I wasn’t!

I also have the mushroom garden, but I’m going on vacation next week and I haven’t opened it yet (I’ve had it for about a week and a half so far). Is it okay to wait to open it or will the mushrooms sprout in the unopened box? I just want to make sure I don’t waste it! When I was doing really well at bringing snacks to work my favorite was carrot and cucumber sticks dipped in hummus. You already have that delicious hummus at the bakery! Now I can buy a tub to bring to work 🙂 Has anyone told you that your hummus is really similar to Beer Run’s? My other favorite hummus in town is at Sticks, and they sell it in tubs too!
