So Hot And So Cool, Yo

Somehow I managed to sleep till 8:15!!

IMG_5465-2Blog

Call it continuing jet lag..

Call it compensating for 7 hours the night before..

Call it Thursday laziness..

Whoops! I woke up dreaming about mean girls from college – and I was the victim. It was sad!!

Oats make a comeback!

IMG_5475-2Blog

Scottish oats (= blended steel cut) with nectarine and blueberries, chia seeds and cinnamon, milk and …yogurt!?!?

Is this the same girl who proclaimed just a few weeks ago that she hated cold yogurt on hot oats? I changed my mind.

IMG_5468-2Blog

I’m using almond milk this week because I haven’t been to the grocery store and couldn’t buy regular milk – so I broke into my “emergency I need milk” shelf-stable almond milk. Almond milk has next-to-zero protein so I wanted to get it from something – yogurt to the rescue. I mixed plain yogurt with raspberry jam and put it on top. It was not cold! It actually heated up to the temp of the oats and was pretty darn delicious. It’s not my favorite way to eat oats or yogurt (I find they compete a little) but it was good!

Warrior Crunch on top! Love the puffs : )

IMG_5477-2Blog

Leftover coffee from yesterday. On ice. Mixing the hot and cold this AM!

IMG_5478-2Blog IMG_5469-2BlogIMG_5466-2Blog

I’m sort of taking today off, but I might head in to the bakery this afternoon. Dinner date tonight!!

I can’t have dairy milk, but it’s true that almond milk is lacking in the protein department! I always try to pair mine with a decent portion of protein, but it would be easier if I just had a protein powder I could add to it to perpetuate my laziness 😉 Hehe.

I was thinking the same about Almond with protein. I never really realized just how low it was. I add yogurt too.

Holy nut butter though! I LOVE that spread.

You changed your header – it’s awesome.

That is a funny topic to me. I’ve neverrr eaten protein powders, even though I work in the supplements/health food industry and have sold them in years past, especially when soy was just getting exploited. But I don’t like protein powders in the way that I don’t like smoothies- it doesn’t seem like food, I would never be satisfied by it in any way, and they always have too much sugar for me (I don’t care if it’s real fruit in smoothies, they are still too sweet and I don’t feel good when I consume them, with or without protein) At times, I’ve thought about it in the respect that protein powders are processed, and maybe that’s why..but then I think about how processed things like tofu and beer are, and it starts to seem like a funny argument. Beer is worse for me than hemp protein powder! Still, I just don’t think of it as food.

I had such a hard time getting mine to glob too but I’ve taken things to a stubborn level by measuring out some onto a microwave safe spoon (in this case it was our tablespoon) and I put it in the micro on a defrost setting for about 1 minute. Turns out all melty and delicious! And that way it spreads all over the oats. A bit more time consuming but it’s worth the extra 2 minutes!

    Love the new header Kath!

I don’t know if I could ever find any love for cold yogurt with hot oats…. I’ve done it a few times to amp up the protein content but was definitely not a fan of the different temp and texture combo.

Though, I love the idea of mixing raspberry jam with plain yogurt! I have had this container of plain Chobani sitting in the fridge here at work forever and I have to eat it like TOMORROW. And I randomally was craving raspberry jam yesterday so I bought a jar haha. I’m thinking I’m gonna do overnight oats with that yogurt and jam.

Do chia seeds really make a difference in the texture in overnight oats? (Seems like they thicken it up?) Or do you add them mostly for nutritional value? My overnight oats are thick but not as thick as what your overnight oats look to be!

They really do add a huge texture change – give them a try!

I hate how almond milk has no protein…it makes it annoying for when I make smoothies since I always like to have a good amount of protein in my meals.

Your oatmeal looks delish though…I always want to jump through the screen and eat your food! 🙂

And I’ve had dreams before from mean girls in high school…not a fun way to start the morning!

Dare I say that your combination of bowl + plate + spoon + napkin is my favorite EVER?

    Why, yes–it’s true!

Those colors + textures are absolutely gorgeous together 🙂

I’m not a huge fan of dairy or yogurt. To be honest the word yo is what brought me in. The idea of oats with a spread is intriguing though. I’m thinking bananas and cream!
