Sleepy Oats

Didn’t make it to the gym at 5 this morning – I think my body clock is still on vacation! Luckily, my day is filled with studying so I’m planning to go before lunch. Tomorrow I do need to go early AM because of my exams, so early to bed tonight 🙂

This morning I made a pot of oats, classic combo. Hemp milk, skim, banana, walnuts, flax, brown sugar, vanilla and almond butter.

With coffee. (Blurry photo – how embarrassing!!)

dsc09025.JPG

To the Cultural Foods textbook I go!

What kind of coffee do you buy? I just sort of get whatever looks good at the time. I have bought organic coffee before, but it is just so expensive that I can not justify it too much. I would rather save my money for organic produce and meats.

    Kath,
I have been following your blog for several months and have to thank you for such an inspiring site!! I am a mother of two and working (struggling) to lose 20 pounds to reach my pre-pregnancy weight. Thank you for giving me the kick start to make healthier choices when choosing food and the inspiration to maintain healthy eating habits. I find it interesting to review your daily posts to find different food combinations and ideas to not only feed myself but my children and husband. When I go grocery shopping and pass the junk food isle your blog is in the back of my mind telling me…get veggies…get fruit….lol. I enjoy seeing the personal pictures you post also….you and your hubby are a very cute couple!! Thanks again for being so descriptive and up to date, it’s a joy to read your blog!! ~Jen

Hi everyone. Had a question about wheat germ. I had trouble finding it in my grocery store, and all I could find was wheat germ with cinnamon and milled flaxseed. I’m using it for dinner rolls so I figured it won’t make much difference. Are you all able to find regular wheat germ at your grocery stores or do I have to go to Whole Foods?

And what else do you use it for?

Does anyone know how to use an egg white separator? I bought one but the yoke ended up going in the bowl- clearly not a success. I don’t want to buy egg beaters (I don’t like them for some reason).

    P.S. Kath cute haircut!

Kat, I don’t think you even need a tool. Just crack the egg in half and you can just let the egg white drain into a small bowl and the yolk just rest in the bottom half of the shell. Requires a little fine coordination, but this always works well for me. 🙂

I separate eggs with my hands. Just let the white slip through your fingers and drop the yolk in a separate bowl. It’s messy, but fun! Or you can just crack the egg and drain off the white by shifting the yolk from one half on the egg shell to another.

Kath, your haircut looks great! I’m glad you had a nice vacation – and good luck with exams.

Question: Do you all eat with no distractions (no tv, no reading, no standing)? I find it very difficult to just sit and eat without reading or something unless I am sitting with someone and talking.

    Hi Kath!
Your vacation looked so fun! Your hair looks GREAT! Love it…looking forward to Cupps tomorrow after the *dreaded* med terms exam!

I LOVE what your mom said about no one ever being able to take your education away! After a few solid days of studying I needed to be reminded *why* I am doing this to myself! lol

    Happy studying!

i think seperating eggs just takes practice! and you’re gonna mess up a few here and there no matter how skilled you are. but I don’t you need a special tool. just the shell!

I finally found hemp milk, although I had to order a case of it at my local health food store! As I walked out after ordering it, I was like “I hope I like it!” Well do I ever! It makes the best creamy oatmeal! Thanks for introducing me to another yummy product!

I always eat in front of the tv or computer …bad bad! I need to stop this but sometimes I feel it is my only time to “catch up” on everything!! Kath, keep up the great work and attitude- forget the few bad apples and don’t let them spoil your mood!

I usually eat in front of the tv or computer – simply because we don’t have a dining table in our tiny apt! We’re moving to a bigger place this summer, and I can’t wait to get all new placemats and napkins and enjoy every meal at the table!

Enjoy your day of studying + the gym! Sometimes it’s totally best to sleep in and save the workout for when you can truly give it your all 😀

    beth ,
We buy Fresh Market’s Spring Blend. It has hints of butterscotch and caramel and it’s the best coffee I’ve ever had. I’d actually like to cut back on my coffee drinking, but it’s just so darn good!

    Lisa ,
Summer school!!! 2 months of it. Night school chemistry and 5 weeks of 8am – 9pm with just a 3 hour break. It’s going to be nuts. But I have a nice break at the end of the summer when I’d love to get some experience in the nutrition industry if I can work it out for such a short period of time.

    Jen ,
Thanks so much for the nice comment! Good luck on those 20 pounds 🙂

    Betsy in Pittsburgh,
I’ve seen wheat germ in jars in the breakfast aisle. Kind of with the oatmeal and stuff. Have you checked there?

    Allison ,
I often eat lunch and read. I find that the TV makes me eat fast and mindlessly, although I still do eat in front of it a few times a week, but a magazine or book actually slows me down.

    Christy,
I’m looking forward to a Cupps salad!! I’m really not putting much effort into MT other than my pre-made flashcards. Cultural Foods is much more annoying!! See you tomorrow 🙂

    Biz ,
So glad you like the hemp milk!! I agree, it’s soooo creamy.

Well, I’m the daughter of immigrants, so my mom doesn’t really talk to me in English (her English is fine, but they raised us bilingual so we try not to speak it at home) :). But it’s the same idea!
