Sense The Season

Hot oatmeal? Yes please!

IMG_1820

This bowl felt like the fall it was so fluffy and comforting. We’re still blessed with mild temps and low humidity here, although I could use a bit more sunshine please. It’s crazy how you can just sense a lower temp and crave a hot breakfast without stepping outside.

I made some whipped banana oatmeal with cottage cheese, some crumbled Hungry Bar and sunflower butter in my Ramen bowl. Blackberries stirred in too!

IMG_1827

Accompanied by a barrel full of iced coffee. 2/3 coffee concentrate and 1/3 water. I could definitely use it stronger, but this mix is working well for now and seems to be a great balance between strength and conservation. I’m also loving having the concentrate in the fridge in my french press so I only have to make it a few times a week! Pioneer Woman was on to something with her month supply in a beverage dispenser!

Have a happy hump day!

I was just thinking about fall this morning while coming across pumpkin recipes on Pinterest. It’s gonna be here before we know it!

Have you noticed if the concentrate is getting a funky flavor? It may just be my fridge, but I find that when I leave ice coffee for too long it gets stale and weird.

I’ve still been eating hot (or at least warm) oatmeal most of the summer. After I go outside for the day and the temps rise then it seems like all I want to eat is cold, refreshing foods. After 100+, 90 here in Nebraska is a relief, but it will be near 100 by next week again. I am looking forward to fall (cooler temps, school, football, volleyball, pumpkin, apples). Love your green dish, where is it from?

I was just thinking about adding shredded zucchini to oatmeal yesterday since I have a lot of home grown zucchini right now. Did you add anything else to them? I was thinking cinnamon and raisins with a little maple syrup and nut butter would be a very tasty combo!

I always prefer the straight concentrate too, so I started brewing it in a 1:3 ratio and at room temp, then pouring it over ice.

great balance between strength and conservation = good to know it’s working for you.

My usual way to get lots of mileage out of cold coffee is to brew a ridiculously strong pot of espresso-coffee or a dark-roast and practically overflow my filter 🙂 Get it as strong as possible, let it cool, pour it into a container and chill it. Over the next day (or two or three) it gets even stronger in the fridge and that’s my ice coffee. I don’t add water, but between ice cubes and cream, it does dilute some. I need to compare it with your method!

(shifting gears…I happened to see this post about making iced coffee in a french press like yours on a Cooks Illustrated site. Might be worth trying/comparing to PW!)

Do you follow Pioneer Woman’s method in your French press, or do you brew it like you normally would in the French press and then store it in the fridge? I followed her method (with your smaller ratio) and it was pretty weak…I wanted just it plus ice, haha. I’m trying to figure out how to make it stronger in taste.

Check the “Hard to Concentrate” post (I think I linked to it here?) I’m using a cold brew method much like PW’s. Although I am making it in a french press instead of tubs and cheesecloths.
