Salt Of The Jar

IMG_0832

Last night was the first in about a week I didn’t get up once during the night. Back to my old self – for once!

IMG_0831

Overnight oats for breakfast! In a sunflower jar, which is my favorite. But you know what? This is the second or maybe third sunflower butter jar that I really couldn’t even eat the bottom of because the butter was just SOOOO salty! It was almost gag-able. I’m guessing from lack of stirring that the salt settles to the bottom and concentrates there. So sad for such a delicious nut seed butter.

Jars

But the top 90% and sides were delicious. Topped off with some Groovy Granola!

IMG_0827-2

And served with cool [decaf] coffee. I actually don’t really like the decaf I have at home. I know decaf tends to be less delicious than regular, but if I’m going to be a decaf-at-home girl (because I get addicted so easily) I’d love to find a really good decaf. I’m willing to pay more for it since I use it a little at a time – any recommendations?

Coolcoffee-2

Have a great summer day – AC is back on!

Sorry, I can’t give any coffee recommendations because I don’t really drink it any more. Having said that though, I’ve been hearing from Tina (CnC) and Julie (PBF) that MaryLou’s in Boston has some delish flavours like peanut butter! Not sure if any are decaf, or if they’re as super-high quality as you’re looking for, but even me being a non coffee drinker is curious to try them!

I drink decaf everyday, and I usually buy a whole bean coffee from Whole Foods. I just look for whichever decaf bean is the darkest and I also use about five tablespoons per cup of coffee–these things seem to help offset the lackluster decaf taste.
However, I am curious about how much caffeine I’m actually getting by using more (decaf) coffee per cup; I don’t care too much now, though my fiancé and I might start TTC soon and I wonder if that will be a problem when I get pregnant…

I doubt the negligible amount in your decaf would have any impact on TTC – I think it becomes a problem for those drinking 5 cups of Starbucks regular a day!

Have you tried making your own sun butter? That way you can control the salt and sugar.

We still supplement with TJ’s, but I’ve been trying to make most of our own with organic sunflower seeds. It’s not exactly the same as TJ’s, but I’m working on the recipe.

We drink Folger’s Simply Smooth Decaf. No it’s not organic or fair trade and all that. It’s just a very good decaf and low acid coffee and I can get it for a decent price at my little grocery store here. My Doctor suggested giving up caffeine for my stomach issues and it really is freeing to not have that addiction. I am still addicted to coffee. I just don’t have to have it RIGHT THIS MINUTE. i had to switch to decaf 2 years ago and the best i’ve found is from the fresh case at Earth Fare. i’m usually parital to a central or south american bean. and it helps to grind it fresh yourself. i got a 10 cup french press that i brew in and stick in the fridge and have iced coffee for the week. 🙂 dunkin donuts and starbucks will do in a pinch, but they’re a bit too bitter for me.

also, have you tried a red tea espresso drink? when i was no-caf, i really missed my hot drinks and tea just didn’t cut it for me. but i found a local coffee shop that has an espresso machine that they use solely for red tea and make all sorts of drinks with. it’s strong enough that it actually replaced coffee for me (until i worked my way back up to decaf). 🙂

    Hi Kath,

I’ve been reading your blog for a long time but haven’t commented before! You might want to try a 100% pure Kona decaf – there’s a local roaster in the Chicago area that sells it online – http://www.hayescoffee.com/. It’s pricey, but my husband swears it’s worth it! Sometimes they’ll have 1/2 off sales, too.

I’m using Starbucks decaf and find it pretty tasty, but I’m definitely not a connoisseur. I’m also happy/sad when I reach the end of a PB jar- happy to do overnight oats but sad b/c i’ts usually so salty! Thus I typically reserve the end-jar butter for sweet stuff like apples and bananas.

For some reason I dislike decaf. I start my day with one cup of espresso mixed with about one cup of warmed almond milk (homemade latte). When I get to work, I make Teeccino and add almond milk both warm and then another in a mason jar for later in the day over ice. It’s not the same, but I think my taste buds are trained that I don’t have caffeine after that one cup and I don’t have “coffee breath”.
