Rained Out and Frozen

Good evening!! Remember when I used to post after dinner every single night?! I’m ready to curl up on the couch and watch the latest episode of Nashville, but I figured I’d pop in and say hello with a little recap of my day. So HI!

Foodblog-7264

^^ Have you tried this chai (that’s chai not chia!) flavor of KIND bar? My new favorite! It served as a hearty snack before a 12:30pm workout today. With all the rain I wasn’t able to fit in a run outside, and since yesterday was a rest day I needed a good workout. I ended up doing 26 minutes on the Stairmaster (never a coincidence!) followed by Vanessa’s 30 minute Tabata class. I’m so used to 60 minute classes that 30 minutes breezed by. My new favorite class! Ha!

Foodblog-7251

I worked on the above recipe this morning for a post coming up in a few weeks, so I packed some up to have for lunch at the gym. I paired it with a banana smoothie from the cafe and got a little more work done there before heading home.

Our rainy day continued, so I figured it was a good time to introduce Mazen to FROZEN! It was both our first time seeing it (although we know a lot of the songs and characters already). When “Let It Go” came on Mazen said “It’s Saya’s song!” I guess she sings it a lot : ) M liked the movie, and I liked cuddling with him for 90 minutes. He was a little scared at times, but it kept his attention. This was his first real movie!

Dinner tonight was Cook Smarts Za’atar Shrimp and Cauliflower with tabouli and pita. Thumbs UP! I loved the tabouli – parsley is my new favorite herb (which is saying a lot because I really didn’t care for it when I was younger). The last of my Barefoot Booch on the side.

Happy evening friends!

There are many nutrition professionals (RDs, researchers, etc.) who go against the grain of the Standard American Diet approach to saturated fat. That article states “The FDA said the bars have too much saturated fat to justify the term healthy,” and if that’s one of the main reasons, I’d really question ruling them out as a healthy snack. Many in the U.S. and around the world enjoy the health benefits of a diet high in fat and low in sugar and carbs. The FDA’s guidelines on fats make avocados, salmon, and eggs, as well as most nuts, unhealthy. The FDA should broaden their view of what’s really healthy instead of doing what’s politically correct. Just my opinion.

        Agreed…nuts = saturated fat = real food = good.

Hey! Thought I’d chime in on this thread. For myself, I’m less worried about the fats (nuts and coconut). It’s the added sugar (honey, rice syrup) that make these little guys more of a dessert, or glorified candy bar. I’m wondering what your thoughts are, Kath?

i love Kind bars and I am obsessed with Chai…going to find this one to try! And Frozenn is always a good choice, though I resisted seeing it or letting our toddler watch it for a really long time!

    Hi Kath-

I’m really enjoying all the posts! I find that seeing what you are eating helps inspire me to make better choices throughout the day. Also, I noticed that you have mounted your TV above the fireplace mantel. We’ve been considering that but have also heard that it causes neck strain. How is it going for you guys?

    Have a great day!

Hey Bridget! No neck strain here. I think because our couch allows us to recline so that my neck is supported back.

I like Kind but never had that flavor. Glad Mazen likes Frozen!!! My son is 11, we’ve seen it several times. He roots for Oloaf and Sven. I bought him a talking Oloaf for Christmas. It rode around in the car for a few days till I could smuggle it in the house. Every time I hit a biump this voice from the back would yell, “I can’t feel my legs!! I can’t feel my legs!! Cracked me up every time.

All the news about the “healthy” label on KIND bars definitely means that we need dietitians who can educate people on different sources of fats. I understand the FDA guidelines, but I think it gives people the wrong idea!

You are beyond lucky to have a gym with great childcare. I would love you to do a post in the future for those of us who aren’t so lucky! I run and walk a lot outside and add some pushups or squats but much more than that is tricky.
