Portable Breakfast

Made it to the gym this morning! Set the alarm for 5:15 and we were there by 5:35. (No snack, didn’t need one and wasn’t that hungry.) I did 37 minutes on the ET and then pull-ups with the husband. It was quick, but it was a good workout 🙂

The workout put us in a bit of a time crunch, so I decided to try a new smoothie idea I’ve been thinking about: Oatmeal Smoothie, what else!?

In the container:

  • 1/3 cup prepared banana oatmeal
  • 1/4 cup skim milk
  • 2 tbsp or so of hemp milk
  • 1 tbsp flax
  • 1/2 tbsp almond butter
  • 3 ice cubes

My blender stick died on me, so the oats aren’t all the way blended. It’s really like liquidy oatmeal and is quite tasty. I wish it were more voluminous. Guess I need to work on the recipe. But it is dense so the REAL question is how long will it hold me…..

I need a better smoothie cup that I can fit a straw into. Any suggestions??

I’ve got a Morning Glory Muffin to eat at 10:00. I’m going to try adding a snack there because it’s a really long morning. I might eat it for breakfast though if this smoothie isn’t filling enough.

And Quackers for the commute home at 12:30 so I’m not starving when I walk in the door –

There was a GIANT dead roach downstairs this morning. At least he was dead.

See ya for lunch!

The smoothie sounds great! Rubbermaid makes a great bottle similar to yours but the lid has a much wider hole that you could put a straw in. It’s the same as this but mine isn’t blue. http://www.thegreathardwarestore.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=832293&click=2744

I found mine in the grocery store but I’m sure any store like Target would have something similar.

    Have a good day!

YUMMY!! I love muffins. They are my big weakness. That’s hilarious about your bottle. I have the exact some one I carry with me everywhere. My husband calls it a sippy cup. So annoying. Not so great for a smoothie, though. You are right.

Maybe something like this? It’s a little small, but Rubbermaid probably makes a larger size:

I have a similar Rubbermaid water bottle that would work for a smoothie. If I remember correctly, there were a few options at Target, so I bet you’ll find something the next time you go.

I love making smoothies with oatmeal! I read about them in Prevention magazine last summer and made them all the time. They suggest making one packet of plain oatmeal (or 1/3 cup) and adding it in to a regular smoothie (very similar to what you did but maybe with more fruits and more liquid so it tastes more like a smoothie and less like oatmeal). It’s a great way to feel full longer from a liquid breakfast.

if you want to make your smoothie more voluminous, uncooked oats work best:

    ex.:
    -1/2 cup rolled oats
    -1 scoop protein (or 1/2 cup yogurt/tofu)
    -1/2 banana
    -ice cubes
    -milk
    -other fruit
    -nut butter

and blend in a strong blender for a minute or so, it works really well, and makes for a really filling shake

also, the ‘protein shaker cups’ work really well for smoothies and the large spout can fit a straw no problem : http://www.gnc.com/searchHandler/index.jsp?searchId=28810533443&keywords=shaker+cup&y=0&x=0

    Hey Kath,

I don’t know about smoothie cups, but I have seen and tried recipes for oatmeal smoothies. I hope you don’t mind if I share!

    Abs Diet Ultimate Power Smoothie
    1 cup 1% milk
    2 tablespoons low-fat vanilla yogurt
¾ cup instant oatmeal, nuked in water
    2 teaspoons peanut butter
    2 teaspoons chocolate whey powder
    6 ice cubes, crushed

    Makes 2 8-ounce servings

    Per serving: 220 calories, 12 g protein, 29 g carbohydrates, 4 g fat (1.5 g saturated), 3 g fiber, 118 mg sodium

    Halle Berries Smoothie

¾ cup instant oatmeal, nuked in water or fat-free milk
    ¾ cup fat-free milk
¾ cup mixed frozen blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries
    2 teaspoons whey powder
    3 ice cubes, crushed

You could probably skip the whey powder if you didn’t have it on hand, and maybe sub flax or wheat germ.
    Makes 2 8-ounce servings

    Per serving: 144 calories, 7 g protein, 27 g carbohydrates, 1 g fat (0 g saturated), 4 g fiber, 109 mg sodium

I have a similar bottle made by Rubbermaid but the top is different- it has a snap top with a heavy plastic straw. They are called “sip bottles” and come in two sizes (I believe).

I use to make protein drinks with oatmeal all the time on the go… i wold mix protein powder with fruit ( you can just do yogurt and fruit or milk) and than you pour it over 1/2 a cup of oatmeal than do your shower and stuff and when you go to drink it at the bottom will be the oats that have absorbed all the liquid and just take a spoon with you and eat the oatmeal out of th ebottom.. it is very good!

    Hey Kath-
Regarding a better cup for smoothies – I have a Rubbermaid bottle almost identical to the one in your pic except the top is different, it has more of a pour spout – so you could use a straw or drink straight from it. I bought mine at HT.
    It’s like this: http://www.rubbermaid.com/rubbermaid/product/product.jhtml?prodId=HPProd100018.

I use it for water at work – I don’t like the ones with the squirt type tops. It’d be perfect for smoothies though.

And it doesn’t contain BPAs 🙂

Kath, I was told by an exterminator that those big roaches come from the trees. See if you can see a tree limb that is hitting your roof. Once they come in, they may build their home in your house but if you exterminated last year they may be getting in some how through the top of your house. Good Luck!

Hi Kath, The Blender Express from Back to Basics (get at Target or Amazon) is a rockin’ little blender with it’s own to-go container that is completely shatter resistant and straw-friendly. I use it every day of my life and travel with it as well.

To get more volume, add Xanthan Gum and Guar Gum (a few sprinkles of each- perhaps 1/4 tsp-1/2 tsp? And ice. Also, you will get more protein with a half a scoop or a scoop of protein powder of your choice. I rely on shakes EVERY morning (and as snacks)- they keep me FULL!!!! Good luck.

I think if the finale of a reality show is over that has to do with food preparation, and you check a food blog message board before watching it on DVR… it may be your own folly if you get spoilers, but…

Angelcubbie…Fage 0% yogurt is AMAZING, thick and creamy in smoothies. You need at least 1 TBS in my experience to taste the nut butters. PB is best, followed by Almond butter and Sunflower butter (in terms of being able to taste it). Banana’s work great and you can REALLY taste them, so 1/2 works, plus it thickens it a tad.
