Peaceful Slumber

….I did not have!!

Well I did once I fell asleep

this !
. But I read Dragon Tattoo for 2 hours in bed last night, and it is getting dark and freaky. Still captivating, but I don’t think I could read books like this over and over.

This AM breakfast made itself for me. Auto coffeepot and OIAJ!

IMG_1228

I’ve been waiting to have OIAJ in this jar for a long time Smile

IMG_1227

Overnight oats in a jar are my very favorite. I’m not sure why I like them more than hot oats, but I think it has to do with the stickiness and doughiness of the overnight oats and the sticky nut butter in the jar. It takes me so long to clean out this jar!

IMG_1232

The Mix

  • 1 near-empty nut butter jar (~1-2 tbsp leftover butter)
  • 1/3 cup oats
  • 1/3 cup greek yogurt
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1 tbsp ground flax
  • Pinch salt
  • 1/2 banana
In the AM
  • 1/4 cup Nature’s Path Ancient Grains granola on top

IMG_1226

Warmth on a rainy day

IMG_1233

Hoping to finish my freelance research article today, go to noontime cycle and finish my book tonight!

Go ahead and do it. Turn on Pandora‘s Swingin’ Christmas station! It’ll brighten your day.

I’m totally with you on the overnight oats in a jar. I don’t like hot oats in there either – I think because they melt the PB and it doesn’t stay as clumpy as it does with the cold oats!

I’ve tried very hard to like Overnight Oats, but I just don’t. I love hot oatmeal, rolled or steel cut… Love, love. I have a nearly empty nut butter jar though, so perhaps I’ll try OIAJ before I swear off OO for good!
I so *want* to like them! It would make my mornings so much easier!

I watched TGWTDT and it was a very difficult movie to watch – very graphic and dealt with difficult subject matter. After finishing the movie, I was a bit shell shocked for a while! I have the book, but knowing how books often provide more detail than movies, I am not inclined to pick up the book.

Graphic nature and difficult themes aside, the story kept me on the edge of my seat!

Hi Kath, I am a daily reader of your blog and love it! Quick question:

Nutritionally, what is the best way to buy flax? I know it must be ground in order to digest, but is it best to buy seeds and grind them as you go, and store in the fridge? Or, can you buy pre-ground flax meal?

    Thanks in advance! 🙂

    Reply
    • Kath says

      November 16, 2010 at 11:13 am

Either way works. I’d say for ULTIMATE freshness to buy whole flax in small batches and grind to use up within a month or so and then buy more. Storing in the freezer should help if you want it to last longer and grind in batches. But buying a bag of ground should be good too. I don’t know any specific research study that has examined these up close, but generally I would not let it sit for years..

On to overnight oats: I just cant seem to master them. I feel like the taste is so so different from my hot oats. The oats just are more oat-y than creamy… maybe I’m doing something wrong? But I do LOVE OIAJ… it’s my favorite way to eat oatmeal. It was my breakfast here too… I’m up in Northern Va but it’s still raining here so it’s perfect weather for hot hot oats. Yum.

I think I am extra sensitive to crimes against women. As good as the book was, I will not be reading the two that followed it because of the violence and imagery.

I started listening to a little holiday music today too, for a half hour or so while in the office–simply because it was dark and gloomy outside and holiday music cheers me up!

Also, I just finished the last book in the series, The Girl who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest, last night! The first book was obviously extremely disturbing and dark, and I wouldn’t recommend it to everybody, but if someone can handle it, then I HIGHLY recommend reading through the next two books! They are much less graphic and much more satisfying than the first. The ending of the final book…just, wow. Although, I don’t recommend reading them before bed, because you won’t be able to put them down 🙂
