Other Mother

Matt and I had Karen over for dinner tonight. But dear Matt now has two mothers to pamper so he put on a special dinner for the both of us!

IMG_0620

Complete with cards + gifts!

IMG_0607

Karen brought over cheese + crackers to have for cocktail hour…

IMG_0604

…and the two of them sipped wine while the son helped his mother with a technical issue on her computer

IMG_0602

I enjoyed a mocktail. I have to say I’m getting a little tired of sweet drinks. Sweet drinks and cheese do not complement one another! Although most of my mocktails are just a splash of juice and mostly sparkling water, I’m missing the lovely contrast that wine + beer offer to food.

IMG_0601

Matt’s gift to me was a trio of cute baby shirts for our little guy!!!

IMG_0612

I have to say I think I enjoyed the thought of him baby clothes shopping by himself almost as much as opening the real present. So sweet!! I love the styles he picked!

Shirts-2

And then we feasted

IMG_0615

Matt made short ribs – from Free Union Grass Farm that he picked up at the farmer’s market – in the crock pot all day. I know he added carrots + celery plus a homemade BBQ sauce made from ketchup, vinegar, Worcestershire, Liquid Smoke and red pepper flakes. They pretty much cooked all day long! Tender and fall-off-the-bone good. I only got about 2/3 of the way through my portion before I ran out of room!

IMG_0624

Because I was busy typewritering my corn on the cob!

IMG_0623

And eating my green beans.

IMG_0626

Deliciousness!

IMG_0622

My first mom is dining with her other daughter tonight. We have already exchanged blog comments and G-chats today. Modern mother-daughter Mother’s Day communication! Perhaps a Skype later on! We both had malfunctions in our traditional gifts – I sent her gift to my house instead of hers and hers is somewhere in USPS’s possession!

I spent the afternoon writing, doing laundry and taking care of general household tasks, so I am NOW going to read on the porch for the rest of the evening!!

If you’re tired of sweet mocktails, you might want to try shrubs, which are a sweetened vinegar concoction that’s supposed to play on the tongue much like alcohol does. You can make all kinds of fruity flavors- I made one this week with rhubarb and added it to some seltzer.

homemade BBQ sauce made from ketchup, vinegar, Worcestershire, Liquid Smoke and red pepper flakes = I could just have that on most anything and be very happy. Sounds so good!

And that stuffed cheese within-a-cheese wedge…I need to do that! Great idea!

Happy Mother’s Day Kath! Your dinner looks delicious. That striped onesie is so cute. And I think there’s nothing more endearing than a future-father shopping for their future child. I know my fiance thinks he’s going to be a horrible father someday but I know that he’s going to be great.

You can find the brand “Fre” Non-Alcoholic wines at any major grocery store – I believe there are Harris Teeters by you? I know I’ve seen them at Publix here in FL. There are 6 varieties to choose from. Try one for fun! They are usually towards the end displays on the wine aisle.

Life is good! Love the shirts, Matt did a great job. Did you wash them and hang them up already? I know I always did. Do you have a mental picture of what you expect your little guy to look like? A mini version of Matt, more like you, or a combo of both? Just wondering. Happy belated mother’s day!

I don’t really….just generic baby for now. But as a toddler…hard to know! Matt was blonde as a kid, but is so dark now, so even a mini him might not look like him till he’s older.

It’s always fun to see who they end up looking like… and acting like. My 6 1/2 year old daughter is a little mini-me, she looks so much like me it’s a little eerie and we have similar personalities. We have pictures that we can hold side by side and people can’t tell who is who. My 5 1/2 year old son doesn’t have a strong resemblance to either myself or my husband, he’s a combination of both of us. Although Claire and Landon are a year apart and the same size so people think they look alike and are twins.

You should try soda water with a splash (or 3) of bitters and lime, my favorite mocktail! If you go to a fancy wine shop you can stock up on different fancy bitters but angostura will always be #1.
