On The Road Again

Other than the fact that the alarm went off at 5:45a, it’s been a lovely morning!!!

And this jasmine warms my heart every time I look at it! Can’t believe we GREW it!

IMG_2877 (640x427) IMG_2876 (640x427)

As we pack up for our trip and prepare for our open house today, Matt’s in charge of the whole kitchen and I’m in charge of the rest of the house.

He made oatmeal with a Great Harvest Oatmeal Mix that he brought home and it was AWESOME!

IMG_2881 (640x427)

It has cranberries, almonds and milk powder in it already so you just add water and slow cook (a la Kodiak Cakes). I’m not sure if there was any added sweetener because I didn’t see any info, but it may have that too. It was soooooo creamy!!!! He just added water and half a banana and it was the best oat texture I’ve had in MONTHS!

IMG_2879 (640x427)

Topped with some roasted almonds, Hemp Plus and a big blob of Naturally Nutty Vanilla Almond Butter! Mmmmmm!

IMG_2882 (640x427)

Cuppa 100% caf so I had 3/4 a cup. Yesterday I was sweating all morning from a caffeine high. I’m so sensitive in the liver and sometimes it’s annoying!

IMG_2884 (640x427)

Karen’s coming at 8 to pick us up and we’ve got a 5 hour drive ahead. I hear the weather is going to be bad too 🙁 Cold and rainy. Hopefully we can still find good food and explore the town.

IMG_2878 (640x427)

See ya’ll this afternoon!

That’s really cool that you grew the jasmine all by yourselves – I’m working on a garden with my Mom when I get back from Greece and I can’t wait to try to grow a ton of different things! I told her to plant lots and lots of basil while I’m gone. 😛

What made you want to grow the jasmine in the first place?

I know you’ve mentioned this before, but what web service do you use for your blog? Was it blue host? I’d like to create my own website, being that I’m an independent yoga teacher, and include a blog, schedule, about me, etc. on it and was wondering what service you would recommend for this? I am on a tight budget, but I’d like the site to relfect well on myself as a yoga teacher.

If you’re looking for fun food suggestions in Cville, here are a few: La Taza, The Local, Mas[all 3 in the Belmont area], Mono Loco, Downtown Thai, South Street [all 3 on/near the Downtown Mall], or Cafe Europa, Lemongrass, & Michael’s Bistro [all 3 on The Corner]. Mono Loco is my FAV place in Cville for dinner… and if you’re ever in Cville around breakfast/brunchtime, you HAVE to eat at Blue Grass Grill, near the Downtown Mall. Their biscuits & granola are the best in Cville, hands down. Have fun! The weather here so far is sunny and comfortable… so hopefully it’ll stay that way for your visit! 🙂

    Hi Kath,
I have a question for you about caffeine: I have always said I’m super sensitive to caffeine b/c when I have coffee (hot or iced), I have to go #2. It jumpstarts my system immediately!!! Decaf coffee also does it, but not as intensely. I thought it could be the warm liquid, but iced drinks do it too. You mentioned something about your liver, so I was wondering if you learned anything in school about caffeine and why it would affect me like it does. Sorry, it’s kinda of funny thing too talk about. Just thought I’d throw it out there! =]

I don’t think it has to do with your liver. Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant and I think going #2 just is a result of that. I have the same effect, but other hot bevs (and other caf bevs) don’t have the same effect.

Kath! A question for you that I’m sure you can answer,
Every time I make my beloved kale chips, there are soggy ones. WHY? I have tried everything. I always dry the leaves thoroughly, s, p, & evoo, and usually give em 2 minutes under the broiler at the end. I put the in at 375 until just browning, usually 10-12 minutes. Do yours do this as well, or is there something you have found that controls it?

Ridiculous question perhaps, but there it is 🙂

I love all the nut butters you use and have ordered from most of brands you use. However I tried something today I wanted to share. I ground a container of almond butter at our local food co-op yesterday and today I took it, along with the seeds from one vanilla bean, a couple of tablespoons of almond oil, some honey, some flax seeds and some dried bing cherries and whirled it all in my food processor. I must say it is pretty good!!
