Oh She Grills

Today has been quite crazy!!

We started accepting applications for the bakery this morning!!! If you know of anyone who would be perfect for the job, please have them apply on our website!

After working on that all morning, I went out for a great run.

But it wasn’t all that great! Only great because it was hot out and I loved that.

IMG_7262Blog

But bad because I ran too far away from home and got too thirsty and tired in the middle! I covered a total of 6.6 miles, and stopped to do some sightseeing walking in the middle when I arrived at my destination neighborhood. I ended up walk-running all the way home – walking up hills and running on the flats and downs. It is CAMBELBAK SEASON and someone was irresponsible!!

IMG_7264Blog

Back to the greats – I had a great lunch!!

IMG_7265Blog-2

An amazing sandwich – hummus, sun-dried tomatoes, and cucumbers on High Five bread

IMG_7281Blog

Plus a side of carrot + apple drizzled in sunflower butter

IMG_7268BlogIMG_7276Blog

And a tiny spinach salad drizzled in honey, EVOO and salt

IMG_7269Blog

So many bloopers on these windy days!

IMG_7280Blog-2

My fabric now has sunflower butter on it!

IMG_7283Blog

After lunch I got dressed up – cute new shoes I bought at Loehmann’s in Towson with my grandmother – and went to a meeting.

IMG_7273Blog-2

After my meeting, I drove straight to the bakery to greet the equipment guy and say hi to Matt. I was so dehydrated from my run and getting hungry by 4PM that I did something I rarely do – I got a smoothie for a snack while out! Made me feel so cosmo to be getting a snack out : )

This guy was from Cville Coffee and was made with TOFU and yogurt plus berries and banana!! I don’t like smoothies made with protein powders and I don’t like them when they’re all fruit, so this guy was a great option made with real food!

IMAG0018Blog

Matt was at the bakery unloading equipment for hours. I came home and worked at my computer for a while.

And waited. And waited. And waited.

I considered calling him and telling him to meet me somewhere for dinner out. But then I realized how easy it would be for me to just grill myself.

IMG_7299Blog-2

I prepped our veggies – smothered in Garlic Gold oil and smoked paprika

IMG_7292Blog-2IMG_7293Blog

We had portabellos, cremini skewers and zucchini

IMG_7290Blog-2

Matt is so much more of the household cook. I’m just the sous chef! But tonight it was all me – even lighting the grill

IMG_7297Blog

15 minutes of char-grilling later, we had veggies and 2 fat organic chicken sausages to eat

IMG_7300BlogGrillablesBlog

Me, myself and I had a great dinner together. But we did miss Matt.

IMG_7317Blog

Matt eventually came home and was very excited to have his dinner waiting for him.

IMG_7319Blog

Bleu Cheese + portabello!

IMG_7322Blog-2

And man oh man was this guy delicious!

IMG_7321Blog-2IMG_7325Blog-2

IMG_7314Blog

I’ve had a bad headache all evening from that killer run 🙁

In other news, you have 13 hours to buy Table In A Bag if you would like one from OpenSky! Just in time for summah.

Also, I am really enjoying my book Resistance by Anita Shreve. It’s very scary though. Very.

Goodnight!

I tend to get headaches after a long run (I live in Florida so it’s usually pretty hot). I am always hydrarting but can’t figure out how to prevent my headaches. Does this happen to you? Any ideas?

Electrolyte enhanced beverages are the only way to go. I was having that headache problem too until I figured this trick out. don’t LIKE Gatorade, so I usually get Smart Water or the lemonade flavor of Vitamin Water Zero. Take it from this Florida girl–some electrolyte enhanced water before, during, and after your run will make a big difference on those hot summer (and spring…and fall…) days!

Thanks for your help. I will try that or maybe some coconut water. I love to run but don’t love headaches. Now that’s to so hot, I’m trying to do my runs before the sun comes up so it’s really early!

Even in the best weather I need water for anything over 4 miles! A headache is no fun — I hope it goes away soon!

Your dinner looks fabulous — bleu cheese on a portabello sounds amazing. OK bleu cheese on anything is amazing.

I made that mistake when I first moved to Arizona. I was about 3 miles away from home when my mouth dried up to dust and my body screamed, “WATER!” Too bad I didn’t realize running in the desert was A LOT different than running back in the humid Midwest BEFORE my run.

Funny part is I had NO money to buy a drink + no phone to call the boyfriend for a ride! So, I ended up going into a gas station to guzzle sink water. Not something I want to remember, but that’s life!

I’m such a goofy, running nerd. I always wear a water belt with at least 16 oz of water when running outside because I have this fear that I’ll be really, really thirsty and there won’t be any water around for miles. I even take water when it’s cold outside (like below freezing). I’m weird that way. Sorry about your headache : (

Haha, nice title! I expected Angela to pop up at any moment in your post:)

I was going to apply at my Great Harvest store but have reservations about waking up at 2 AM for work. It sure seems like a fun job though!

The only time I felt dehydrated in running was when I ran a half-marathon. The water stations were spread out too far for me and when I got there people kept handing me disgusting lemon powerade – yuck! But I was desperate so I drank it…next time, I am going to be a smart runner and have that mini water bottle belt/fannypack where you can store snacks.

    Hi Kath!
I have been meaning to email you because I just found out that I was matched to the UVA Health System Dietetic Internship program and was ecstatic! More importantly though, the second I found out I knew I would need a job (although I know the internship is a lot of work, the director said students have been able to manage part time work quite well) and then FIRST thing I thought of was “I have to get a job at Great Harvest.” I am just like you and want to become an RD but also LOVE to bake, and hope to one day open up my own vegan bakery 🙂 Anyways, I am totally applying and hoping you will hire me to work weekends and every time else I can!

Any tips on apartment hunting for a 22 year old IU grad would be much appreciated 🙂
P.S. I get so excited when I read your blog after all this time because now I will get to experience Charlottesville just as you do, true foodie paradise!

Because I think there should be fat or protein with every meal/snack, and all fruit is just a lot of eggs in one basket on the fruit category. That said, I dont’ think there’s anything WRONG with an all-fruit smoothie, and I’d drink one if I was given one

I am not anywhere near you, but I highly recommend reaching out to a local program that provides employment support to people with intellectual disabilities. The advantages are that your interviewees are highly motivated, pre-screened and generally come with a job coach who will assist with the orientation period. I don’t know your area that well, but here is a list of agencies. If you send a form email and a link to the ones near you it will pay off. Its like having your own recruiter. Also, its likely that employing someone with a disability will get a tax break.

Good luck with the hiring process! I am currently hiring a bunch of people for seasonal jobs, and I’ve had an overwhelming number of applicants, and I am sure you will too!

Your dinner looks HEAVENLY! I’m impressed by how grill-savvy you are…something I need to learn 🙂

I love Anita Shreve books usually, I’ll have to check that out! If you need a book to read next, I recommend The 19th Wife…it is SO fascinating, I can hardly put it down!

      Hey Rachel!

I’d say we’ll be ready for catering pretty soon after our opening – within a week or two. Our sandwiches are fabbbbulous so I hope you’ll give them a try!!

I looked over the application and I’m pretty sure it’s illegal to ask someone their age on an application. I think you can ask them if they are over 18, but flat out asking age is illegal (unless the law changed). Just didn’t want you to get in trouble.

P.S. It may not be illegal, but def. frowned upon. He is the EEOC that answers the question.

For headaches due to dehydration from exercise, drink coconut water! Before and after a run, it should help quite a bit. I do bikram and if I don’t chug coconut water (or Emergen-C packets) before and after, I will get insane headaches for hours after.
It’s all about electrolytes! Just water alone won’t always help; I can drink water for hours before and after a super sweat workout, but if I don’t drink things that will balance my electrolyte loss, it’s headache-town.
Been reading your blog for a while now and love it 🙂 I read about it in Marie Claire, came to check it out for myself, and now I read this instead of Marie Claire! It doesn’t sound like you normally have issues with headaches and exercise, but a few people above asked about it so I figured I would pipe up.

If I’d had a coco water I would have drank it!! I agree – it’s great for days when you feel like you can’t catch up with hydration.

      thanks for reading!

Hey Kath. So sorry to hear you got dehydrated. Been there. Done that. I found that the Performance hydrating drink from Shakee is awesome for avoiding that. Not like Gatorade with dyes, etc. Performance was actually made for a Greek athelete who foot-pedaled the Daedulus plane across a sea that was 72 miles long!! He drank Performance the whole way. Olympian athletes love it. Shaklee also makes a drink for astronauts called Astroade. So, safely hydrated in the air, space, or on land!! (I figure it’s also great “for the rest of us”) Getting ready to talk a walk with my husband, right now, as a matter of fact. : 0 )
