Off Balance

Blaahhhh. I feel very off balance and icky this morning. You missed the two cookies I had from the freezer last night, and I definitely underrepresented the number of tiny pours of wine I had. I slept horribly and feel really dehydrated. I’m feeling the cumulative effects and am very grumpy as a result!

I would have liked to start the day with yoga, but I didn’t have the energy so I had breakfast first thing. I was really thirsty and cold cereal sounded very appealing, so that’s what I had.

IMG_1204 (800x600)

  • 1 medium banana
  • 1 kiwi
  • ~1/2 cup Quaker Oatmeal Squares
  • ~1/3 cup Kashi GoLean
  • Sprinkle Flax
  • Taste of PB
  • ~2/3 cup vanilla soy milk

IMG_1200 (800x600)

IMG_1201 (800x600)

+ a very green tea.

IMG_1202 (800x600)

IMG_1198 (800x600)

Today’s agenda needs to include some school work. Thankfully we got the grocery shopping done yesterday. I’d like to include yoga and a workout too, not sure when and how.

Hoping I can return to equilibrium ASAP. I had way too many indulgences in January and I’m starting to feel the effects. February is a fresh start.

Kath, seriouly, your “indulgences” in January were minimal. I noticed you ate a lot more snacks in November/December but have cut down this month. Plus you work out like a fiend, doing yoga plus cardio most days. Don’t let one messed-up day dampen your overall super-healthy lifestyle.

ultimate hangover cure: propel vitamin water. we keep a box of the single serving powdered packets in our pantry for such occasions. one serving has only 10 calories. you can drink it in the morning but is even more affective if you drink it before you go to sleep at night.

Kath, I have to agree w/ Jennifer. You ate healthy over 80% during your day yesterday, plus you rode your bike 12 miles along with a longer yoga session, and plenty of lifting/carrying/walking at the store and during your activities at the house/stores and today you are beating yourself up about an extra 1-2 glasses of wine and a heavier portion of dessert! I think you are too hard on yourself; you are overly perfect the majority of the time, don’t sweat one slip last night. Just think, it could have been worse. You could have had 2-3 slices of pizza, 2.5 servings of dessert, plus 3 glasses of wine (like I would have!) but instead you showed discipline by filling up on salad and only one slice of pizza! I think sometimes you are so strict on yourself, that when you do have a fun night out and overindulge a little you make yourself feel guilty for it. Just know it could’ve been worse and that your “over indulgences” were mild compared to some of us out here!

I think next time u have to try to fill up on more food before dessert: People might not agree with me, but having some crackers and cheese or even another slice of pizza helps the body hold down alcohol better, also maybe ur craving for sugar was because u were unsatisfied.

I think we’re all entitled to an “off” day every now and then. I had a look at last night’s post and I agree with K – the banana pudding looked well worth it! I think all things considered you did really well. But I know how you feel – because we eat so “clean” 98% of the time, when we do indulge, it really does throw us off a bit! I honestly don’t know how I used to handle eating the way I did before I got healthy – I used to eat so much cr*p!!

I find that when I wake up feeling like that, a run is the best cure! Even just walking around the fresh air (or in my case today, snow!) is a good way to get you feeling better and blow the cobwebs away! Hope the rest of your day is great. Keep up the fluids 🙂

I also think you may have to chill out a bit. There is no sense in being down about having some wine and a bit of pizza!! You eat perfectly healthy about 90% of the time, do tons of exercise, yoga, get your required sleep, etc. You should be able to handle an off day and some indulgences every now and then.

I have to agree with the others. Before I say anything let me say I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your blog and you have really done amazing things with it to inspire others to strive to eat healthy foods. But today I was a bit let down to see you be so hard on yourself. You know better than I do how many people read your blog each day and take what you say to heart. You have created somewhat of a responsibility (sorry, but it’s true) to show others how to have a healthy relationship with food. 99% of the time I think you are awesome (!) about this, but today was one small example of how you might unintentionally make people think it’s not ok to indulge in some pizza, wine, and desserts with friends on a Saturday night. I know that you’re trying to make a point that you just don’t feel so great after indulging, but I just want you to be aware that some people (like my insecure self) read that and think “if Kath feels guilty for that, well then geez, I’m really a piece of &%$@ for what I did last night!” Do you know what I’m trying to say or am I out of place? If I am, please put me back in my place! 🙂 Anyway, I hope you feel better soon and are having a very productive day!!

it’s so hard when unexpected treats jump into your path … and once you start, it’s nearly impossible to stop! sometimes i think i have the balance down perfectly, and then WHAM — cookies just start falling into my mouth while i sit and let it happen.

you’ve got a great start today, though. as you know, diving back into healthy is the best way to feel better. good luck on schoolwork — that’s my plan for today, too.

Don’t be so hard on yourself! There is a slippery slope to super healthy eating and disordered eating. Eat, stay active, be happy.

Just out of curiosity, it seems that food takes center stage in your life. Do you think your blog in any way causes you to have a somewhat unhealthy relationship with food?

Guys, I think you are totally misinterpreting my post here. I’m not feeling guilty about indulging last night – or last weekend or the last. I think it’s pretty clear on the blog that I believe in indulging in sweets and good food when it’s “worth it” and last night totally was. What I AM frustrated with (not guilty, frustrated) is the fact that I made myself feel so SICK every weekend in January – mostly in the form of a hangover. I could care less about last night’s pizza or desserts if I’d woken up today feeling chipper, but gosh I felt so horrible when writing this post that I wanted to get across that my goal is always to feel my best and last night’s consumption did not leave me feeling good at all. Notice that I probably ate/drank more actual calories on Friday night but since I didn’t make myself feel sick, it was no big deal the next day. Sure, we are bound to go overboard on things like wine every now and then, but this has become a repeating occurrence recently and I just wanted to emphasize that I’d like to stop creating unnecessary suffering.

You should go to a running store where the associates are trained to choose a shoe that’s best for your feet and running style.

Yup, I eat the skins and all. It doesn’t gross me out – it’s just like peach skin.

I always read but rarely comment on the blog, but I just wanted to say that I totally understand where you are coming from Kath. I am definitely not the healthiest eater ever and I am certainly known to overdo the “small pours”. I think everyone needs to keep in mind that when you wake up feeling gross and hungover, it is nearly impossible not to be frustrated with yourself. I despise that feeling of getting up and feeling like the day is going to be a challenge because of the choices I made the night before. I also think that it’s Kath’s blog, and she can/should write exactly what she is thinking/feeling, because really – isn’t this blog more about her than her responsibility to others? I think she has a responsibility to be true to herself and how she feels most. Anyways, hope everyone has a good day and enjoy the Superbowl!

Kath, you’ll be back on track in no time (a healthy breakfast is a great start!). If you don’t make it to the gym today, don’t beat yourself up over it. Sometimes after a day of too much food (and sweets) my stomach totally freaks out and it takes a whole day to recover, so the gym is not the most appealing. Good luck! 🙂
