North On 95

I set my alarm early today to fit in a small town run before we set out on our 6-hour drive up I-95. iPhones are the COOLEST because the alarm feature is sooo easy to set compared to my old flip phone. And the rings are cool too! I woke up to “strum" 🙂

My run was awesome. It was one of those sunrise, twinkling mornings with trees glistening. I loved every minute of my 4.25 mile run. I waved at about 15 people and actually ran into two people I knew! (I had 3 bites of a banana before I left because I was hungry)

I came home and took a cold shower with fun selections from the Suave buffet. My dad always stocks up and there is always a fun choice of flavors. I chose Coconut this AM 🙂

IMG_0213 (640x480)

I came down and assembled a nice yogurt bowl with a Food Lion brand raspberry yogurt, Kashi GoLean (which was a pleasant surprise to find in the pantry – it was for Aunt Pat), leftover fruit salad and a few peanuts.

IMG_0217 (640x480)

I’m a bit of a bowl snob, but I loved eating out this lightweight plastic one.

IMG_0216 (640x480)

Dad made me a cup of coffee too!

IMG_0215 (480x640)

IMG_0214 (640x480)

Grandmother’s Best

Here’s the best I can do with the Chocolate Chip Pie recipe. It is my Grandmother Younger’s recipe and here’s her original recipe card! It’s a pretty simple recipe with marshmallows, milk, heavy cream (whipped) and chocolate shavings in a crust. Hope you can read it.

Gourmet Roadside

Last Christmas on our way home, mom and I saw a Wegman’s from the road and wrote down the exit number so we could try it out on a future trip. Today was the day!! We were a little late and quite hungry by the time we rolled into the parking lot.

IMG_0220 (640x480)

It was HUGE!!!!! Wish we’d had time to explore, but we just got to visit the cafe side.

I, of course, got a big salad 😉 Lots of veggies, olives, blue cheese, garbanzo beans, italian salad, some noodles, walnuts and mozzarella salad. It left me QUITE full!

IMG_0223 (640x480)

I also tried an Honest Tea. Love that these are just lightly sweetened with cane sugar. The whole bottle was 60 calories. I enjoyed it a lot.

IMG_0222 (480x640)

My lid message. Perhaps this is in response to the blog troubles!?

IMG_0225 (640x480)

IMG_0221 (640x480)

We arrived at my grandparents’ home just a few minutes late for a fabulous cocktail party like the one we attended in December 🙂

IMG_0233 (640x480)

My grandmother had a lovely spread of delicious foods, but I wasn’t that hungry yet from our late lunch. I hope to eat some as leftovers in the next few days!

IMG_0228 (640x480)

I was handed a glass of white wine by my aunt, which I sipped throughout the hour

IMG_0229 (480x640)

I chatted with lots of nice people – a former dietitian, a food scientist, and a nice man, Ed, who knows all about Montana where we are likely headed for a Great Harvest interview this fall.

IMG_0232 (480x640)

After the party we headed down to the dining room for dinner. Mom, Gram and Uncle Chris –

IMG_0235 (640x480)

The dining room was buffet style and I started with a green salad, which I didn’t quite finish (still full of lunch lettuce!)

IMG_0236 (640x480)

And I had a piece of snapper with half a baked potato with some sour cream and pepper. And broccoli with some zucchini underneath –

IMG_0240 (640x480)

IMG_0241 (640x480)

IMG_0239 (640x480)

I ended with some ice cream with some marshmallow sauce and a few chocolates. And a bite of mom’s peanut butter pie.

IMG_0243 (480x640)

After dinner we visited a friend of my grandmother’s who wanted to show us his parrot, Spike!

IMG_0253

Spike likes to chase Harry around his apartment in circles!

IMG_0249 IMG_0247 IMG_0246

We spent the evening hanging out with my grandparents, and Larbs just arrived by air!!

SOOOO jealous of your Wegmans trip. We had one at PSU, but nothing like it when I moved to Chicago. *tear* I miss you Wegmans, your gourmet cheese counter, and your fresh made sushi. Oh, and the groceries.

I stare at honest tea whenever I’m at the store, but I never know if I’d like it-I worry it’ll be too sweet the way premade iced teas are a lot. Sounds like maybe I’ll have to give it a try!

Hi Kath! I live about 20 minutes from your Grandparents and grew up about 10 minutes away. You are totally on my turf! If you have the time and the inclination, there is another Wegmans about 15 minutes from Edenwald. It’s off 83 – the Shawan Road exit, heading east on the left hand side.

Wegmans! I had never really heard about it till the other day, then we did our own crazy road trip and were surrounded by them.

Unfortunately we didn’t have time to stop…. it was a crazy trip of 950 miles round trip to attend a funeral…. however the shiva had a few tasty items from Wegmans.

    WEGMANS!!

I worked at the Perinton Wegmans in high school. If you are a bowl snob, I’m a Wegmans snob. I don’t consider the new Wegmanses (the ones in VA, MD, NJ) true Wegmanses because they don’t have the right community feel and they don’t seem to have quite the level of customer service that the Upstate NY ones had/have. They are also a lot more warehouse-y, but the newer ones are higher margin, so unfortunately it looks like any further Wegmans expansion is doomed to be of this variety . . . oh well, bad Wegmans is better than the best of the alternatives!!
