No Sandwich Left Behind

At the airport enjoying a leisurely breakfast

 this !

I didn’t sleep that well last night (including a goodbye hug and kiss from my husband at 2:30AM when we left for work!) but I was ready to go at 5AM when my alarm went off. Time to squeeze in a gym trip before the airport.

My visit was quick and efficient: 30 minutes on the ET plus 15 on the Stat bike. I wanted to bike there, but it was pitch black and truthfully I was scared of the spider webs along the sidewalks more than anything else!!

Back at home my schedule fit to a T – shower, make-up, dress, final packing, make Karen coffee, depart. Karen was nice enough to pick me up for yet another early morning flight, so I made her some French press for the ride 🙂

Got to the airport and through security in about 2 minutes. And then it hit me – I FORGOT MY LUNCH!! And LaraBars and nuts and snacks. They are all still in the fridge 🙁 Since I planned to eat breakfast at the airport (yay Jamba Juice!) I didn’t have a trigger to remind me to get my food bag from the fridge.

My first reaction was panic. I WILL STARVE!! And then I calmed when I remembered that there is food literally everywhere and airports are getting healthier by the minute. The only drawback? $$$$.

So here is the delicious Laughing Cow, Dill and Veggie sandwich I will NOT be enjoying mid-flight

IMG_0040 (640x480)

And the sweet potato fries that I cleverly made in the microwave last night. Not sure how they would have tasted cold the next day, but anything sweet potato is my cup of tea!

IMG_0041 (640x480)

And all the bars that will not lighten my bar stash without me eating them – (I did get the Barney Butter because it was in my “liquids and gels” pack!)

IMG_0042 (480x640)

So I went with my original plan to get a Jamba smoothie.

And would you believe that they have mastered the SIAB!?? Smoothie in a bowl cup complete with banana and what appears to be Nature’s Path granola –  just missing the hazelnut butter. I couldn’t have made it better myself!!

IMG_0043 (480x640)

It even came with a long spoon like I use!! I chose the Mixed Berry made with yogurt and soymilk for protein.

IMG_0044 (480x640)

I was impressed by the fun snack selection at Jamba and picked up a few to last through the weekend. $$$$ = OUCH! Hi Popchips! (I was also impressed by the friendliness of the Jamba employees this morning!)

Never get caught on a 6 hour flight without snacks! (I’m going to add a piece of fresh fruit to this pile)

IMG_0048 (640x480)

Next stop: coffee.

I had my very first ever Pumpkin Spice Latte!!!

IMG_0046 (480x640)

Guys, it’s better than I ever could have imagined. This breakfast left me totally full!

I am super excited to announce that I will be doing a series of videos for GoodBite.com! I was especially honored to be asked because of the other cool food bloggers who are GoodBite contributors!

My first video involves….oatmeal! But not in a way you’d imagine.

Good Bite is kicking off a challenge sponsored by Quaker Instant Oatmeal that begins today. The challenge is called “Awaken Your Senses”

Senses Logo

Here’s how it works…

Twelve of us bloggers have come together to share a favorite food memory. Our memories will be translated into a Quaker Instant Oatmeal recipe by David Lawrence (of Good Bite) who will use flavor and topping combos as inspiration to recreate the memory. Every 2 weeks, a new round of videos will be posted where you can vote for your favorite. With each round, semi-finalists will be selected. At the end of eight weeks the blogger’s video with the most votes wins!  And by winning, that means $10,000.00 will be donated to their favorite charity. I will be representing Feeding Americas Hungry Children, and my video will debut in the third round. Once it’s up, you can vote at the Quaker Talk YouTube Channel and hopefully my charity will win 🙂

***

I dressed up for my flight – wearing a cotton shirt dress and my fall bright red long jacket. I feel like I’m going to Hollywood because I’m usually in jeans and tennis shoes while traveling!

I have a lunch idea in mind and am going to hunt that down now….

See you on the Left Coast!

I love dressing up on the airplane…although still try to wear something comfortable too. It’s like the days when travelling was rare so people got dressed up. Wouldn’t it be fun to see everyone dressed up instead of slobbing it like we all usually do!

I haven’t had Jamba Juice in a very long time but that makes me want to seek one out! Also, how have you lived your life without a pumpkin spice latte before now?! If you found it to be a little on the sweet side I usually order it with just 2 pumps of the pumpkin spice, which definitely keeps the flavor but cuts down on the sweetness factor.

A lot of those airport fast-food places now have bowls of apples right next to the cash registers. I always grab a few of the apples and stick them in my carry-on bag. They’re cheap (maybe $1 apiece) and healthy, even though not organic. And you can always wash them in a rest room.

I’d say the only drawback is the $$$, but sometimes those things happen 🙂 Way to go for not freaking out and snapping back to reality lol. And you’re right, the choices at airports are getting better by the minute. At JFK they’ve got Fage yogurt, Larabars and even gourmet vegan sandwiches. Of course it’s all craaazy expensive. I didn’t know Jamba Juice created such awesome smoothies – kudos to them!

Wow! Good luck, Kath. That’s an amazing challenge to be apart of.

I did the same thing when I flew to South Carolina. I had the best of intentions to bring snacks and a sandwich and it all got left at home. Not a fun relization when I was already at the airport 2 hours away. I spent a pretty penny buying snack there.
