New Restaurants In Cville: Broadcloth and Merrie Mill Vineyard

I love trying new places, and couldn’t wait to go to both of these new spots! There are two new restaurants in Cville: Broadcloth at The Wool Factory and Merrie Mill Farm & Vineyard! This weekend we were able to go to both! Here’s what we ate and drank.

Date Night at Broadcloth

The first new restaurant in Cville is Broadcloth! Dinner at Broadcloth was long-awaited. While Broadcloth opened a few months ago, the indoor dining space is intimate and we wanted to be fully vaccinated before visiting. Three weeks ago I made a reservation for an upcoming Saturday night and we asked Nona if she could babysit.

I love the tagline “Modern Dining; Historic Setting.”

The Menu

Broadcloth is located at The Wool Factory, a historic textile mill, and I love that everything there has a textiles theme. The napkins, servers’ attire, drink menu, and décor are all infused with cloth. You might remember our first visit to Selvedge Brewing at The Wool Factory. Even the beers are named for textiles.

The Broadcloth menu features 12 small plates that are coursed in either 4, 6, or the Chef’s Tasting (8-10) and can be paired with drinks. We chose the 4 courses, and I added the wine pairing.

Chef Yoder

I have known Chef Tucker Yoder for years, first from The Clifton and more recently from the soccer field! He sent out a bite on the house – a goat cheese quesadilla made on one of his famous homemade tortillas – my favorite!

The Bread

You can judge a restaurant by the quality of its bread, amiright? This warm sourdough with the most delicious flake-salted butter was SO good.

The Courses

Spring vegetable salad, tofu dressing, black cocoa crumble

This salad was bigger than it looks from this angle. My favorite layer was the black cocoa crumble, which was just a hit of chocolate mixed with the thick and creamy dressing. It was a fantastic combo with the just-picked crunchy vegetables.

Roasted steelhead, shiitake rice, Tokyo turnips, cilantro

I LOVE steelhead trout and this dish was crispy from trout skin to turnip leaves – they were like kale chips!

Dry-aged beef ribeye, charred broccolini, caramelized onions, thyme cracklins

Served with a complex red wine, this was the perfect portion of beef. I even ate an onion or two!

Lemon mousse, minted pea ice cream, blueberry compote, anise hyssop (me) AND Chocolate torte, sunchoke ice cream, caramel, rhubarb (Thomas)

I absolutely loved the fluffy lemon mousse!! It was the perfect ending to the meal.

After dinner, we walked along the creek. It was a gorgeous night!

Merrie Mill Farm & Vineyard

While our visit to Broadcloth was on us, we were invited to Merrie Mill Farm & Vineyard for a tasting! It opened Memorial Day Weekend and it is one of my new favorites.

The Farm

Merrie Mill is located in Keswick, and the 15-minute drive from Cville was beautiful on a warm summer day.

Purchased by the Pelly family who relocated from the UK, the main house on the farm dates back to 1857.

The tasting room, pictured above, is sparkling with new paint and décor. And it’s decorated with a very eclectic collection of art and design elements, like animal print wallpaper and a Victorian sea lion suspended from the ceiling (sealing?) floating by pink balloons.

The Terrace

What I loved most about our visit to Merrie Mill was that we felt like we were visiting someone’s house. My friend Caroline and I had a table on the back terrace where we enjoyed a tasting and cheese plate!

Wine

While Merrie Mill’s grapes mature, they are serving wines from their neighboring vineyard, True Heritage. All five of them were delicious. The Rosé and Viognier were my favorites, but I liked them all.

Food

I love a vineyard that also serves food, and they have a small selection of platters and bites to offer. We shared a charcuterie board which was delish!

Cheers to new restaurants!

I have really missed posts like these and really enjoyed it. The locations and food look lovely and as for eating an onion, you must have really missed eating out a lot!

okay, this makes me so excited to get back to Virginia wine country this summer – I’m so glad that things are opening back up and thriving! Merrie Mill looks adorable, and I love the decor! I just have to ask though: what is a Victorian sea lion? I feel like I’m missing something lol.
