My Go-To Gym Smoothie

There are so many ways to make a smoothie out there. This is my go-to gym smoothie and the nutrition behind my ingredient choices! This post was originally published on my Substack.

Does anyone else feel the panic of indecision walking up to a smoothie menu board?

You step up. You scan the board. People are behind you waiting to order. You’re confronted with names like Island Breeze, Chunky Monkey, or something neon-green promising “metabolic magic.”

Most of the time I’m looking for a smoothie to be a meal – either breakfast or lunch (or post Saturday workout brunch!) I want it to taste good, keep me full, and give my body something useful.

So here’s the DIY smoothie recipe I always order!

My Go-To Gym Smoothie Ingredients

Mixed Berries

Berries are the foundation. They do a lot of heavy lifting: fiber, antioxidants, micronutrients, bulk. Plus they’re just expensive enough that it feels like I’m getting my money’s worth, haha. If I’m paying smoothie prices, I want ingredients that would cost me more at home!

They also bring the sweetness without turning the whole thing into a milkshake. It’s a subtle, natural sweetness that doesn’t overpower everything else, which matters when you’re adding protein and nut butter.

Spinach

I always ask for a handful of spinach because… why not? You truly cannot taste it (but it does turn the smoothie the color a lovely green sludge).

Spinach is the ultimate stealth health ingredient – no bitterness, no weird texture, no “I’m drinking a salad” vibe. It just quietly boosts the nutrient profile while berries and vanilla do their thing. I rarely make a smoothie without it – even for the kids.

Whole Milk (or 2%)

Milk is doing triple duty here: protein, fat, and creaminess. Whole milk (or 2% if that’s what’s available) gives the smoothie body. It turns it from something icy and thin into something that actually feels like a meal. The fat helps with satiety, the protein adds up, and the flavor is creamy, milkshake adjacent.

Of course if you can’t have cow’s milk, having a comparable non-dairy substitute is fine. Look for one with more fat and protein.

Sidebar: I can’t stand it when smoothies are made with fruit juice. You’re getting so much sugar without any fat / fiber / protein. If you have a splash of juice, that’s great, but try not to get a smoothie with a juice aka sugar foundation.

Vanilla Whey Protein

My favorite part about adding vanilla whey is the vanilla flavor. But I also love that it boosts the protein up quite a bit.

I prefer whey protein to plant-based – purely a taste and texture thing. It blends smoothly, doesn’t chalk up the drink, and vanilla plays well with everything else in the cup.

Peanut Butter

This is where people raise an eyebrow. Peanut butter with berries? This is a taste and satiety decision. If this smoothie is going to carry me for a few hours, I need it to stick. Peanut butter adds fat, richness, and that “I am actually full” feeling that a fruit-forward smoothie sometimes lacks.

Sweet berries + salty peanut butter = a PB&J situation. It’s really good.

(I will say that I got Birch one of these smoothies recently and he politely said in his most grown-up voice “I don’t really like the aftertaste.” I didn’t even know that he knew what “aftertaste” was, but I laughed because he was clearly referring to the PB!)

And the nutrition facts?

I honestly don’t care what the calories or protein grams are – what I do care about is that it’s made with good ingredients and keeps me full! This smoothie will keep me full for hours thanks to all that’s inside. And for that to happen, it’s gotta be more than 1-2 ingredients.

Leave a comment with your favorite smoothie ingredients and why you love them!
