Maze Daze

We are home!!! It’s been such an exciting day. I loved being in the hospital – the nurses were so helpful and the accommodations excellent. However, now that we’re home, I am SO glad to be here!! I was able to get in a 40 minute nap this afternoon in my own comfortable bed while the grandparents oogled over the baby.

While Mazen has been nursing and napping, Matt has been putting together this beautiful video of our first weekend together. Enjoy!

I hope the video doesn’t crash because it’s long!!

I’m off to enjoy a little glass of wine : )

PS. I have TONS of photos, hospital meals and more to share, but I’ve been busy. See you tomorrow!

LOVED this video! So glad you posted it =).

The shushing right up against Mazen’s ear was unbelievable… was that tip from Happiest Baby on the Block or the No Cry Sleep Solution (or another book/source)? Both books are sitting on my bedside table, but I have yet to crack open either as I’m currently reading about 5 pregnancy books ;). With 4 months to go, I guess I should start reading about what happens after labor & birth!

I also love that you cracked open a Pumking! My hubs just bought a couple to save for after the big day… I’d take a glass of the king of pumpkin beers over a glass of champagne any day – especially after not having had any alcohol for nearly a year =).

it IS amazing!! My husband and I have followed all of the 5S’s from the Happiest Baby on the Block and I swear by that book!! I would recommend it to every expecting couple! My little girl is 4.5months and has been sleeping through the night since she was about 2months old (6pm bedtime, dream feed around 9-10pm, sleeps through until 6-7am).
We are new parents, so that book was our “bible” – we continually re-read and referred back to it during the first few months; we had both read it beforehand and watched hte online videos w Dr Karp, but once you have your baby, you pick up even more from re-reading sections of the book.
I’m glad things are going so well Kath!! Mazen is a doll. 🙂

That video was precious! Thank you for sharing! And I think your dad is a wise man for letting Mazen decide what to call him! We called my mom’s dad Peepaw, too. I’m not convinced I want my kids to call my dad that, but we will just have to see.

ALSO! I don’t remember when, but at one point you had a little convo going about craft beers and you made the comment to avoid cans – but there are actually canned craft beers! My husband is a beer snob and has wizened me up. Oskar Blues (http://www.oskarblues.com) out of Colorado set the trend off by canning their beers because cans are lighter than bottles for backpacking. Husband is from Colorado, so this is of particular interest to him 😉 He is a red ale fanatic and particularly enjoys their G’Knight, I believe. But he gives mad props to the rest of their line. You should try them out!

Awww, he is so cute, thank you for sharing that with us! You all look so happy. Now, I know nothing about babies – I’ve never been around any and I’ve never had any so this is a legitimate question. That shhhhh thing that Matt was doing in his ear seemed like it would be kind of loud for a baby and it made me a little nervous watching it. Are you sure that’s ok to be doing right in his ear? I’m sure you know what you are doing and I’m not being critical, it just made me nervous but then again I am a nervous nelly! 🙂

The “shhh” thing is actually recommended for soothing newborns. (I think Kath has mentioned Happiest Baby on the Block – that’s one book that recommends it.) It turns out that life in the womb is not silent at all – they hear all kinds of noises from the mother’s body like her heartbeat, blood pumping through her body, etc. – so they’re accustomed to a kind of “whooshing” noise and tend to find it soothing.

I have never seen shushing in the ear to stop the crying, but wow, it sure did the trick! Does it simulate the ambient noise they are used to in the whom?

I loved the video! I am currently 12 days past my due date and feeling bummed that we’ll likely have to get induced in the next day or two (I was looking forward to experiencing going into labor spontaneously, laboring at home as long as possible, etc.). Anyway, seeing little Mazen got me excited about the fact that no matter how labor begins, we get a tiny little baby boy to love and snuggle at the end! Many congratulations to your entire family!

    Hi Kath,
I’ve never posted before but have read your blog for years now– it’s truly helped me to shed the 50 lbs I was carrying by tackling food in a natural sense. I have so enjoyed reading your posts over the years and lately was checking multiple times a day to see if you had given birth.

I had to post because, obviously I do not know you, but this video just brought tears to my eyes! Especially with Matt’s amazing “shusshing”!!! Nothing like a father’s touch!

May you and your family have many years of health and happiness! I look forward to following your journey from the great “up north” of Minnesota!

    All my best,

Maze is beautiful. Congratulations!!! Oh that swaddling/shusssshing technique brought back so many memories. I had a colicky little one that could not be calmed by anything. I remember one night literally shushing for an hour just out of desperation. (needless to say that wasn’t her thing) I found out that walking on a treadmill while she was in a carrier on my chest was one of the only things that appeased her. Nothing like endless walking on no sleep. The things you do as a new parent.
Enjoy this time they grow up so fast!!

    A little list:

    1) The bear hat and KERF onesie are the most adorable things ever.
    2) Matt has some excellent swaddling and shushing skills. If there’s ever some kind of new-dad talent contest, he must enter! Or, at least, he should create a demo video for other new dads (such as my husband) to reference as necessary sometime in the next few years… 🙂
    3) To chime in with many others, you look amazing for just giving birth! Not to mention, you make it look like second nature to soothe and burp a wee one 🙂
    4) Enjoy your glass of wine! If there was ever a moment to celebrate, bringing home baby is certainly the proper occasion. Cheers to the Younger-Monson 3!

Don’t worry…the pain goes away! I’ve said this like 9 or 10 times already, but if you haven’t met with an IBCLC yet, DO IT! Nursing was fine for us, but I wanted to double check just for peace of mind when he was about 9 days old. The LC gave me a few pointers and feelings went from “ok” to great. We were really blessed!

The video didn’t even load 🙁 Maybe it will work on my phone? Jess swears by her LC. And the hurting should go away in a minute if the latch is right…do not keep him on if it doesn’t cause that means he slipped onto the nipple. We had a tongue thruster and consequently, cracked, sore nipples, and neosporin works wonders for that btw. And don’t be surprised when he loses weight coming home, perfectly normal. He is super adorable!!

Oh my goodness what a perfect video to be able to look back on your experience!! Matt doing “shhh” in Mazen’s ear brought back a flood of memories…it seems that all Dads have that “baby whisperer” quality built in 😉 Also, I am so glad that someone else’s parent is waiting for the baby to decide on their grandparent name…that is what my mom is doing also! This really was just too sweet…enjoy being a family at home 🙂

Finally watched the video today, what a great memento! I’m sorry but I had to laugh when you told your mom not to let his arms out! Haha, I know we’ll be the same way when ours arrives in December. I’m sure our moms will think – you know we have done this before!!- but hopefully they just give a smile like your mom 🙂

And nobody asked me but I’m voting for GranBoomPa!

That video was absolutely beautiful. I just want to say to you and Matt – my dad did a lot of videotaping of me when I was a baby… a lot of it is similar to your video.. lots of video of just me, doing baby things, making baby noises, while he would just video tape and not talk a lot. Coming from someone who now has all of these videos… KEEP RECORDING! Watching videos like that from when I was a baby, with my older brother trying to play with me, seeing my mom and dad hold me, it just really means a lot and brings me to tears every time. Mazen will really appreciate you guys doing that for him! And of course, he will have millions of baby photos 😉

    Kath,

Could you clarify a few things? When is it safe to have a drink when you are breastfeeding? Do you have to wait until whatever amount – as little as it may be – gets out of your system?

I heard a recent study came out saying it was safe to have one drink WHILE you are pregnant… that sounds like a recipe for disaster to me! The government also approved the use of thalidomide for morning sickness without testing the consequences. :-/

    Thanks!

multiple lactation consultants and our doctor have said it’s fine to have a drink or two. No mess to pump and dump and the milk is hardly affected. However, I recommend talking to your own team about your concerns and individual situation.
