Make Hay While The Sun Shines

I had planned on going for a WALK this morning. I try not to run 2 days in a row to prevent injuries. But as I stepped out the door and walked away, I felt the need to …speed things up! So I ran. And it was fun. I am loving my morning runs!!! Since it’s warm + sunny in the morning, you gotta make hay while the sun shines. Come winter I’ll be sleeping at this time!

I just covered 3 miles because I’m also biking to and from the bakery and because I ran yesterday, but it was enough to get my sweat glands super charged up! HOT!!

Whether it’s 1 mile or 10 miles, any running before breakfast is a huge accomplishment in my book.

IMG_0979Blog-2

[You have no idea how many failed self photos I took before this one. All photos of my chest!!]

Hot day, cool soup.

IMG_0989-2Blog

I made a smoothie out of greens from our garden! Only, I used chard + lettuce instead of the thicker kale or baby spinach. You COULD taste the greens in this bowl – but the flavor was almost like LIME!! I really enjoyed it!

IMG_0992-2Blog

So-Green-It’s-Lime Smoothie

  • 3/4 cup yogurt
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1 large banana
  • 1 handful ice
  • 2 giant handfuls mixed garden greens
  • 1 heaping tbsp almond butter ( <—sad because I couldn’t taste it at all)
  • Ambrosial Orange –Cranberry Granola
  • Hidden sunken berries!

Blend in a vita-mix! Use the plunger if you need to.

IMG_0993-2Blog

Sometimes smoothies make my stomach clench. I think I eat them too fast and/or the liquid travels through too fast. Ouch! It usually only lasts a minute or two, but it’s something I’ve noticed after eating lots of them.

I feel that way after smoothies sometimes too. I’ve read that mixing fruit with just about anything is a little harder to digest. Maybe that with the coldness of the ice makes it a little funny sometimes.

I love adding all kinds of greens to my smoothies. It’s much more fun to go out and pick some lettuce and spinach from the garden than to think of going to a store to buy smoothie fillings.

I’m the same way with smoothies — I have to drink them slowly, or I have 1/2 then wait a few minutes and have the other 1/2.

If I try to take a pic of myself I need to take about 12 pics — and maybe (just maybe!) one of them looks ok.

Aren’t we fortunate to live in a time with digital photographs. Just imagine if you had to buy the film, take the photograph and then take it to get developed which took several days. Then pay more money so the entire cost of each photograph was almost $1. This was at a time when gasoline cost less than $1 and minimum wage was less than $2. Also, there was really no way to post it online to share with other people. Actually, this was the way it was done just a few short decades ago! Kath, maybe if you have a good sized mirror to put just behind the camera and use your remote, you will get just the right picture in less time.

I always use the ratio of about 1/3 ice to the 2/3 F R O Z E N fruit along with the other ingredients: oats, flax, chia, greek yogurt, skim milk, salt and vanilla. It comes out like ice cream and takes about ten minutes to eat. I guess with that consistency, I slowly enjoy it like desert for breakfast and never get that feeling. However, it is filling and lasts 4-5 hours.

It is odd to me that I can drink kale smoothies without batting an eye, but chard in or lettuce in a smoothie always leaves me meh – if I have extra chard, I tend to juice it and use the pulp in raw crackers, but kale, which is more assertive, I love in smoothies. Go figure.

I love the bowl in this picture. Are you doing any more bowl promotions. I have been kicking myself for missing the Cali bowls 🙁 I went back and forth on them because they were 8oz, and I like my smoothies to be a bit larger, but I should have gone for them.

I get that after smoothie bowls too! I’ve hypothezied that because everything has been liquified already, the digestive enzymes present in the saliva and stomach don’t have a chance to get to work properly/be released/work with the food hence the pain. Not sure how scientifically accurate this is though??? Whatever, I tend to avoid them now 🙁

Short (5’3) with a fair amount muscle on my frame (I laugh, because my legs look like yours and my husband is jealous that my calves are bigger than his. Hee Hee!). My girls are a 34 C. I enjoy jogging every other day if I can. It’s a daunting task to find a sports bra that provides optimum support. Heading into my 47th year next month I need to take care of my friends!

I have the same one you’re wearing in the picture (Kath) in hot pink! But the good ones for larger-chested ladies are *not* cheap, so if I balance out my collection with a bunch of the cheapo, $16 sports bras from Target (I think the brand is Champion?) and buy them in a small so they’re very snug, then I’ll wear two! It’s definitely not the most flattering look (hello, uniboob!) but it’s cost-effective and holds everything in. Just have to make sure to wear a looser top to avoid, uh…bumps. 😀

I was supposed to run yesterday morning, but I flaked! So, I gave my fiance permission to push me right out of bed this morning if I didn’t get up on my own. Luckily I was up and out the door. I did 4 miles (almost quit at 3, then again at 3.5, then decided I could handle another 0.5) and ended up really sweaty. I came home to check the humidity…it was 95%. Now I’m at work trying not to fall asleep at my desk!

It’s supposed to be close to 100 degrees later on today. Yikes!! Glad to get that run in already!

There is nothing like a morning run, plus it makes breakfast even better! I adore your bowl by the way.

That’s the worst!! –when you add in nut butters to a smoothie and can’t taste it. I would have just spooned it into my mouth if I knew that! boo!

      Hi Jen!

I had to comment, since I just read Tina’s book (Carrots ‘N’ Cake) and she wrote about them quite a bit. here’s one post: http://carrotsncake.com/2009/01/wonderful-wheat-berries.html that links back to Kath’s –> https://www.katheats.com/recipage?recipe_id=6000108&prev_term=wheatberry

      Hope this helps!

Finally made it over to the Kirkwood GH…..Tom says hello back to you!

Had the California Cobb (minus bacon much to the cashier’s dismay!) on Dakota Bread. OMG..that bread IS as good as you say it is. However…the sampling of Cinnamon Chip is what will make my return to the GH happen. BEST breakfast bread EVER! Doughy does not even touch how soft and perfectly textured this bread was!

Kath you’re so good at food that your garden greens taste like limes. I had a salad today and the lettuce tasted nothing like lime. That made me mad.

All jokes aside, I can see the flavor of chard, when paired with the right things, tasting citrusy.

I like those country sayings! Of course most people have never seen hay being made, or eaten like my horse has 🙂

I started by writing for CalorieLab, and am still at it!

    Congrats on the RD!

Smoothies are the BEST after a morning workout!! I always put the almond buttah on my spoon and get a little bit in each scoop!
