You are here: Home / Weekend / Lunch in the Dining Hall!

January 16, 2008

Lunch in the Dining Hall!

I was supposed to meet a friend for lunch but she wasn’t in our meeting spot ?? Oh well. It took me 20 whole minutes to navigate the dining hall and survey everything that is offered. There was lots of fresh looking food – and the best part is that they had lots of the nutritional information on display. Nice job, Winthrop!

I started with a salad, of course 🙂

Toppings:

  • Spinach
  • Mushrooms
  • Cuc
  • Cauliflower
  • Shredded carrots
  • 1 tbsp raisins
  • Pickles
  • Jalapenos
  • Sprouts
  • 4 spears asparagus (grilled in oil)
  • 1 tsp honey mustard

Also had the most delicious soft roll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wish I could have had a slice of whole wheat toast, but the sandwich line was a MILE long. Note to self: wait until 1pm to eat here when the crowd dies down a lot.

dsc05078.JPG

I also decided on potato soup, which was listed as 110 kcal for 6 fl. oz. Not bad! It tasted great, but I’m not sure how it was prepared, and I’m sure if I saw the nutritional ingredients I might not choose this. I found some delicious lemon-garlic broccoli to put in it (and put some on my salad too!)

And I found these on the sandwich bar and will nibble on them this afternoon!

dsc05079.JPG

Looking back I should have had skim milk instead of water for some dairy and added some kind of protein to my salad (turkey meat?), but it was so crowded and my backpack was SO heavy I just had to sit down!

All together for ~375-400 kcal.

dsc05075.JPG

Although filling, this lunch wasn’t too high in calorie. I’ll be snacking soon! I was going to have an ice cream cone (they have iced milk) but it was too cold and I had to run because…..

I left my lab stuff in my trunk!! This meant I had to hike (yes, hike) all the way back across campus to get my goggles and lab book. After this post I have to hike all the way back to where I had lunch! Argh! At least it’s great exercise!! I just wish it wasn’t so cold out.

Afternoon

I have my trail mix bag, carrot sticks and am planning a hot chocolate with skim milk when I get home around 4pm after Chem Lab.

Amazing that I had a 2 hour lunch break and didn’t do ANY studying!!

Physio is REALLY hard. I was totally lost.

See you tonight for shrimp and vegetable pasta!

    Hi Kath,

Do you ever chew sugar free gum? What is your take on this?

The greatest thing about my college was the dining hall! Don't get me wrong, we had all the horrible choices too(pizza, hamburgers, fries, fried foods, etc) but there were SO many healthy choices, and they posted all the nutrition info! Trust me, I was shocked when I looked at veggies and saw like 200 kcal per serving! They were dripping in oil, so I should have known, but when you think veggies, you normally think healthy!

They had a taco bar, but hardly ever had taco salads(when they did it was those huge fried tortilla bowls) We would make a healthy salad, and then ask for the taco meat or beans or whatever on it to make it a taco salad. A friend of mine would say "The dining hall isn't what it is, it is what you make it!"-words for college students to live by!

Hello Kath! May I ask what kind of cocoa you use? I just had one/added a couple dark chocolate chips. How do you upload your photos onto the site? Must be alot of work. I'm thinking of starting my own blog. There's a great book called the artist's way. You don't have to be an artist, it's about unlocking one's own creativity. Was thinking it might be a fun thing to try/share with folks.

Sometimes I miss those dining hall meals…my school actually had pretty good food! Also, they posted the nutrition information at the dining halls…and also posted ingredients online. So, you might wanna check out Winthrop's website and see if you can find anything!

Sounds like you're enjoying your classes…even though they may be difficult! Physio was a really interesting class, but definitely hard! Hope it goes well for you…I'm sure you'll do great!

if everyone ate like you do in the dining hall the freshman fifteen would be but a fiction!

i wish my dining hall had those kinds of choices!! we have a “snack bar” which only sells pizza, hot dogs, hamburgers, and nachos…. once in a while they have caesar salad, but thats very rare!

you’re doing great Kath! You’re really helping me keep my enthusiasm level for this new semester high!

Your meals are really inspiring and always look delicious. One question: how would you suggest someone who has a far lower activity level than you go about modifying them?

You know if you ever have stats questions, there are people to ask! Don’t worry about getting stressed, you did fine in college, I’m sure you’ll do great in grad school!

    Hi Kath,

Just wanted to let you know that I tried spaghetti squash for the first time for dinner tonight and LOVED it!! I'm 18 years old (a senior in high school, so I still live at home), and I told my mom about how I wanted to try spaghetti squash, and she found a recipe for spaghetti squash with homemade tomato sauce and surprised me with it tonight! It was delicious .. even my dad and little brother loved it! We will definitely be eating it more often around here. Thanks for the great idea!!

    Lauren 🙂

Thanks for all the academic enthusiam everyone!!

    Rummie,

Can you just come do it for me 😳 !?!?

    Kelbel and Rachel from yesterday,

Interesting question because I recently gave up sugar-free gum. I read in Dr. Weil's book "Eating Well for Optimum Health" a case study about a woman who was having all kinds of constipation and bowel troubles and after many diet analyses they couldn't figure out what was wrong with her. Finally she realized she had been leaving her gum (sugar-free) off of her diaries. The doctors told her that the sugar alcohols (xorbitol and sorbital or something like that) can interfere with the absorption of water in the intestines. She gave up gum and was cured.

    SO

When I was working I used to chew between 3-5 pieces of Orbit Sweet Mint a day – mostly out of boredom. I'd feel "hungry", have a piece of gum, and my boredom "hunger" would go away.

WELL, without going into the specifics, I was having some bowel troubles. Nothing major or gross, but Mon-Fri. my bowels weren't moving quite as well as they would on Sat.-Sun. I thought it was too much fiber, IBS, stress, etc. but when I read this case study I realized that I don't really chew the gym on the weekends. I cut it out of my diet and (knock on wood) have had NONE of my troubles in almost a month now.

It's been tough giving up the habit – especially when my mouth could use a refresher around 10 a.m. but I've learned to just drink water more. I doubt everyone would have this trouble with the sugar alcohols, and I'm sure I could have a piece every now and then and wouldn't notice, but I'm hesitant to have even one!

Hope that was a helpful explanation to many of you!

    K

    Amanda,

Thanks for the elbow in the side! I know I need to update quite a few things but it's really last on my list right now! I'll try to do that on Saturday when I have a little more free time.

    Kim,

See my dinner post for the ingredients! (Skim milk and Nesqick). I like CIB too, but I can't find the tubs here and Nesquck is basically the same.

    Rachel,

I would probably eat the same things and just reduce the portion some. I'd leave out either the walnuts or the PB in the oatmeal, perhaps make it with 100% water instead of half skim milk, reduce lunch or dinner by 100 kcal. But I wouldn't dip below 1500 kcal – I HAVE to eat at least that much or I'd starve. 1700-1800 is a perfect amount for me so I do try to be as active as possible. Maintenance makes that wiggle room much easier. If you can't increase activity, I would rather lose at a slower rate than eat less than 1500. HTH.

    Lauren,

Now that's what I like to hear!! So glad you family enjoyed it 🙂

I am totally right there with you on the one o'clock thing. If you try to get food around noon on my campus it takes until then to get it all paid for anyway! Hehehe, I wish we were offered great stuff like that!

I also want to comment that I made the spaghetti squash tonight with marinara and turkey meatballs and it was soooo delicious (and I didn't feel guilt after eating it) Thanks for the tip! I check you blog daily for ideas!
