Loeh’s

A quick hello before I get on the road!

Shopping was fun – I got a few dresses. Loehmann’s not only has great prices but a wide variety of clothes! It’s kind of like TJ Maxx – you never know what they’ll have. I think 75% of the dresses I own have come from Loeh’s. Mom and I got matching ones!

We returned to dine in the cafeteria where I got a half tuna sandwich and a salad bar salad

IMG_0615 (600x450)

My salad would have been even better if I had not spilled my ice tea INTO it at checkout!!! I sopped that up with some napkins – I couldn’t bear the thought of throwing it away and starting over. Perhaps this is a new dressing trend!?

IMG_0616 (600x450)

IMG_0617 (600x450)

Just got the word that I was nominated as one of Foodbuzz‘s Best Healthy Living Blogs!! Thanks to you all for the nomination – I would love the honor.

n-besthealthyliving KERF won Best Food Blog 2009 [I was utterly shocked] and now there are a whole new set of exciting nominees!

Happy voting!

    Congrats on the nomination, Kath!

Question for you — I’m trying to start eating naturally (no junk or processed “food”) and was wondering if you have some resources to suggest? I’ve ordered Michael Pollan’s Food Rules and visit your website 3x a day, along with Faith’s, Eating Bird Food, and Edible Perspective, and that’s about the extent of my research. 🙂

I guess I’m just overwhelmed and don’t know where to start. I weigh, um, a lot (a whole bit lot!) and want to start taking care of myself before it’s too late. I need a starting point — like, do you plan your menus for the week or just buy proteins and veggies and build your meals on the spur of the moment?

      Hey Ellen! Welcome.

You’re off to a good start. I’d recommend reading the book Superfoods HealthStyle, by Dr. Steven Pratt. It’s a really easy read packed with research on which foods we SHOULD put in our bodies everyday rather than which ones we shouldn’t. Food Rules is great too! There are a bunch of other great books that are much lengthier – like Marion Nestle’s What To Eat or 101 Foods That Could Save Your Life. Generally I find blogs to be the most inspiring!

I just discovered your blog yesterday and I am really enjoying it. Can you explain what real food is and perhaps list some reading resources around that subject that you love.

      Welcome!

Real food to me is food in a form that is found in nature – or food from nature that has been minimally processed to make it more palatable, like milk or cheese or tofu or bottled sauce with simple ingredients or a Larabar that’s made of smooshed together real food. If I could have made it myself if I had the time and basic equipment (like a canner or ice cream maker) then it counts. What is NOT real food are ingredients that were made in a laboratory like isolated proteins, high fructose corn syrup, blue #5.

I’d say I eat real food 95% of the time.

About 10 comments up I just wrote out some resources I recommend!

Hi Kath! I’ve been reading your blog for a long time now, not sure I ever commented. I had a question I thought maybe you’d know the answer to since you’re an RD and all. I love artichoke hearts, right out of the can (with a good rinsing), I eat them all the time. I guess because of their lack if color I dont think they’re very nutritious and I don’t count them in my veggie servings. I was just wondering what you thought if their nutritional value?

Congrats on your nomination! I’ll throw a vote your way 🙂

Well I think they are nutritious because they still have the same nutrients panel fresh – they just might come along with some added sodium and/or oil. Rising them is a great solution. Count ’em for your veggies!
