It’s A Date

IMG_4485Blog

I felt well enough to make pancakes this morning – a big step from yesterday’s tears in bed.

IMG_4493Blog

Banana Coconut pancakes on le menu! When I add mixins to pancakes, I put the batter in the pan and then add the toppings. They stick inside for the flip and then gently sear on the other side until it’s time to come up for eating.

cakes-3Blog

On the side, I decided to try out this date syrup. After my pancake at Guglhuph this weekend, syrup sounded good. Guess what it tastes like? Dates! It was really thick – like molasses. I couldn’t even finish it all because I only needed a teeny drop on each bite. This would be excellent in place of brown rice syrup or molasses in recipes.

IMG_4487Blog

IMG_4492Blog

Minty tea. [Can anyone else say the word “minty” without thinking of Conan’s candy cane!?]

IMG_4494Blog

You know how I told you that I haven’t skipped a day without a shower except for a camping trip in youth group? Well yesterday was a first! So that’s what I’m off to do!

I tried date syrup at a little boutique in NYC and loved it – was too scared to try to carry it home on the plane though – I didn’t want it confiscated. I agree it would make delicious granola!

I’ve always enjoyed pancakes with a small bit of syrup, rather than doused in it, even as a kid. Our latest “syrup-y” experiment is sorghum — kind of light a light molasses or a dark honey, and fun because the sorghum is grown locally!

I’ve never heard of date syrup before, but have really been getting into infused oils and balsamic vinegars. I posted about them a while ago (http://bit.ly/si3Q3U) and my absolute favourite of the 48+ flavours available is the maple balsamic. It is so delicious that you can literally put it on pancakes – I know it sounds crazy, but I’m totally not joking. There’s even an extra virgin olive oil that tastes like butter, and it’s completely dairy free. When you mix the 2 together… oh my.. I promise, you’ll be thinking pancakes! Not sure where it’s available in the US but I’m really happy that one of my fave local stores stocks it!

Showering or a bath are my favorite part of the day! I start and finish my day with showers! Can’t go to bed dirty and need that clean feeling when I go to work too, plus my hair would be a sight if I didn’t wash it in the morning. Every morning! I am a bit overboard on being clean and am the same way about brushing my teeth multiple times per day.

Mornin’ Kath! I got Kimberly Snyder’s “The Beauty Detox Solution” yesterday and am already half way through it. Her theories about what and HOW we eat are fascinating to me. She says that Food Pairing is just as important as the foods we eat because certain foods digest easier when paired together and others digest better when eaten before a meal (fruit, for example). According to Snyder, if one were to eat chicken and then an apple for dessert, the fruit can’t get through quickly to the small intestines so it just sits in your stomach for hours, fermenting. Someone who eats fruit first gets more nutrition from the apple and uses less energy digesting the meal. The whole time I was reading I kept thinking, “What would Kath think about this?” Have you read her book? What are your thoughts on Food Paring?

I feel that for MOST people, this isn’t an issue. Think about our ancestors and how the human body evolved. If the cavemen had to eat an apple first or they would get GI distress, I’m sure nature would have come up with some way of making us crave apples before meats. There are millions of people in the world who don’t combine foods in any shape or form and are happy and healthy. To me, this epidemiological evidence suggests it is not important. As they say, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

But some people do have very sensitive GI tracts and might benefit from experimenting with food combining. Her science may be slightly true, but I think our organs were designed to digest whatever foods we could get in whatever combination as efficiently as possible.

Interesting, Kath! I have always kind of thought the same thing, but I have zero formal education in food or nutrition, so it is nice to hear from some one with the background to have an educated opinion on the issue.

I agree with Danielle even though I didn’t comment yesterday. I was getting a little bored with the content (although I loved the Jamaica review). I’m sure it’s not easy to hear all of the criticism. But it was nice to have what felt like a “real” breakfast post rather than just a few pictures of oatmeal. I hope you’ll continue to use the constructive criticism and make some changes.

I’ve been a long time reader of your blog and many others. Some of the blogs I’ve read have gone from 3 posts a day to one and I still love reading them and often find the content is better. Just a thought. Quantity does not always equal quality and maybe it would be a better use of your time to put together one really good post a day.

I do not post there but have read the forums, if they left those kind of comments on most of the blogs they talk about they would swiftly be deleted (not talking about Kath in this instance, since she obviously did a good job responding yesterday). Most of their criticisms are valid, and I have seen a great improvement of some of my favorite blogs since that forum began.

I love homemade date paste and use it as a sweetener, but date syrup sounds more indulgent/richer. Intriguing nonetheless.

I’m sort of obsessive re. taking showers post my daily workout as I find the warm water a great muscle relaxant. But, I certainly don’t do it for my hair’s sake – it behaves best with washes 2 – 3 times per week.
