In Vino Veritas

Foodblog (16 of 31)

We had such an amazing anniversary at The Farmhouse at Veritas last night! Matt and I had talked about spending a night away for our anniversary, but we just never got our act together. Then last week Sarah offered to host Mazen for a sleepover, and at the last minute we found an open room at Veritas. We then discovered they host a four-course wine dinner Tuesdays through the weekend, so it really could not have turned out better!

We kissed Mazen goodbye (who waved us away so he could go play with Sylvia) and drove 30 minutes into the country for a semi-local getaway.

Foodblog (6 of 31)

Our first stop was the Veritas tasting room, which we hadn’t been to in a while. Guests at the Farmhouse get a free tasting and 10% off wine purchases!

Foodblog (4 of 31)

We loved ALL of the wines in the flight and bought a Saddleback Chardonnay –

Foodblog (5 of 31)

Next we drove over to the Farmhouse to check in.

Foodblog (7 of 31)

We stayed in The Surrey, which was gorgeous and so cozy.

Foodblog (8 of 31)

It had the coolest bathroom! We learned that it was once a back staircase, and when they converted the house to a B&B they put the bathroom in the stairs.

Foodblog (9 of 31) Foodblog (10 of 31)

We dressed up for dinner and headed down for the 5:30 wine hour.

Foodblog (11 of 31)

We were really lucky because they had a wine writer visiting earlier in the day and opened some extra special wines.

We took our glasses out on the porch to explore the grounds a bit in the drizzly rain

Foodblog (17 of 31)

I must pause to tell you about this dress!!!White Plum sent it to me to save for a special occasion as part of my partnership for this year. It’s the A Time And Place For Lace dress, and this was a good time for lace! Use the code KATH25 for 25% off your entire purchase now until June 10!

The gardens were gorgeous and I’m sure they are even prettier in the sunshine!

Foodblog (20 of 31)

We headed back inside to chat with the other guests and ended up meeting the owners of Veritas! It was such a treat to get to know them. There were also little appetizer plates prepared – those olives!!

Foodblog (12 of 31)

Dinner began with a glass of bubbly!

Foodblog (21 of 31)

And we were escorted to a table on the enclosed porch.

Foodblog (22 of 31)

Our first course was honey-glazed pork belly over chipotle grits with cilantro cream (pickled onions on the side!). Paired with the 2014 Viognier. This was my favorite course!

Foodblog (23 of 31)

Course #2 was a spinach salad with white wine vinaigrette, goat cheese, crushed peanuts and dried blueberries paired with the 2014 Rose.

Foodblog (24 of 31)

Our entree was a grilled hanger steak over sweet and sour red cabbage, cumin-roasted cauliflower and a spicy salsa verde. That was paired with the 2014 Cabernet Franc.

Foodblog (27 of 31)

And finally we had strawberry short crepes made with buckwheat, lemon cream and marinated strawberries paired with the 2013 Petit Manseng. Plus two surprise chocolate truffles!

Foodblog (29 of 31)

Chef Cecily de la Pena did an amazing job and came out to explain each course to us.

After a good night’s rest, we woke up to a gourmet breakfast back out on the porch.

Decaf French press to start –

Foodblog (3 of 5)

Plus orange juice and a little sparkling wine! (I asked for just a taste – it was too early!)

Foodblog (2 of 5)

To start – croissants with raspberry butter and fresh fruit. Loved the butter!!

Foodblog (1 of 5)

We had a choice of a sweet or savory breakfast, so we ordered one of each and shared.

Cornmeal pancakes with cherry butter and hickory syrup –

Foodblog (5 of 5)

And fried egg with sausage over potatoes and sauteed spinach.

Foodblog (4 of 5)

We had an absolutely amazing time at The Farmhouse at Veritas! We really felt like we were back on our honeymoon in Sonoma for the night. It was such a great escape. I highly recommend it to anyone traveling to Cville and looking for a romantic all-in-one experience. (And because I’m sure some of you are wondering, none of this was sponsored nor were we invited by Veritas – this was just us celebrating 8 years somewhere special!)

The end.

What a beautiful anniversary! It makes me want to scout out places near us that we may have overlooked. Sometimes the best places really are in your own backyard.

This looks lovely! Coincidentally, my husband and I have something extremely similar planned for our first anniversary in two weekends! We’ll be staying at a b&b outside of Charlottesville and touring wine country (and breweries for my home brewing hubby!). I have a list of places in Charlottesville I want to go thanks to your blog!!

I love that the lace overlay on that dress isn’t the traditional floral! I find that style of dress cute, but so wrong for my body type! My broad shoulders, large chest and short waist make it an awkwar fit!
