Impromptu Par-tay

This has been such an enjoyable Saturday!

Karen arrived around 5:00 with a leftover bottle of wine from last night and we chatted away until the husband came home at 5:30. She decided to stay for dinner, so we had ourselves quite a fun Saturday night! We’ve been listening to the Big Band Jazz station on Pandora.com, and it’s really set the perfect festive atmosphere for the evening.

We sipped wine and cocktails on our back patio. The patio is concrete and I so wish we had the money to 1) Put down stone 2) Get a nice outdoor set. Some other year I guess. But we had fun in our plastic chairs gazing at the freshly cut yard we never use.

My Manhatten husband 🙂

For dinner we had………..BISON!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’ve been wanting to try bison for ages now but it’s only sold at EarthFare and we just have never gotten around to buying it. But I send the husband a message at work and said I was in a burger mood and to bring home whatever looked good.

It. was. so. good!!!! It was like eating a medium-fat juicy beef burger but from what I know about it, it’s pretty lean. Check out this site for more info: Bison Central.

DSC04716

Each burger was 4 oz of meat (raw) combined with half a slice of french bread baguette (crumbled), splash, worcestershire sauce and S+P. We cooked them on the grill for about 2-3 minutes per side to have them nice and rare (and tender!)

DSC04718

I cannot WAIT to have these burgers again!! Mine had ketchup, mustard, a tiny bit of Smart Balance mayo, romaine, and jalapeno. We served them on Food for Life Buns (the Ezekiel brand, found only at EarthFare in our city).

DSC04711

We also grilled some okra pods – yum!

DSC04713

And had 4 red potatoes, cut into slices, rubbed in oil, S+P, and rosemary at 350* for 50 minutes (could have been done at higher temp for less time).

Second small pour of wine –

And a bite of Blondie for dessert

I’m off to finish my wine glass and watch our movie 😀

What a great day!! I need one of these days soon! Just clean, get things done, cook dinner and relax…im so jealous right now 😉

What is okra like? I see it on so many blogs lately, and I don’t think I’ve ever had it (if I have it was probably in something and I don’t rememebr!). I also don’t think I ever see it served anywhere around here (new england 🙂

    Hey Kath!

:] it’s great to hear that your day went well! Long-time lurker coming out just to say that your healthy lifestyle and scrummy looking meals have me extremely envious 😛

How does bison taste like anyway? x] I want it!

Oh, and ending on another envy-pang note. The picture of your hubby reminded me of another thing; you guys are really, really lucky. The fact that you support one another in healthy habits and that he’s willing to let you take pictures, and what the hell, even write on your blog, just shows how supportive he is of you. Of course, I might be reading this all wrong, but it’s great to know that your life is good.

Um. Have a good Sunday? xD

Looks like you’ve had a fun/busy little Saturday!
We’ve had bison a couple of times and have enjoyed it! We’ve used it as burgers, too and they are pretty tasty! I think it tastes quite a bit like beef but it’s usually leaner/healthier and I think it does taste a little healtheri, too 🙂

I really do not enjoy ground beef, but my husband has times where he “turkey burger just won’t cut it”. Bison has been a good compromise because I actually like it and he feels like he’s getting beef.

About your lunch post, FYI I have been told (and have also experienced) that Pledge can ruin the finish on your wood furniture. I know some use it with no problem but when I recently bought a kitchen table from Ethan Allen the designer made sure to tell me not to use cleaners such as Pledge. I finally know what has ruined the finish on some of my furniture!

Whoa, the bison looks great! I want to try!!

Thanks for the pandora big band jazz rec – I’m listening now 😀

Okra might just be my new favorite veggie. It’s so awesome.

Also I’ve been thinking about the song question from this afternoon… maybe it sounds similar to the Star Wars soundtracks? I think John Williams was really into “The Planets”… Also the part of the melody around 3 minutes sounds (to me) like a part of a Sweeney Todd song, but I can’t think which one.

Rambling comment, have a great night!

You guys should pick up a bocce set for that beautiful flat-seeming yard. It’s the perfect thing to do on a nice night, drink in hand, while something is cooking on the grill.

Bison is definitely a good choice – I’ve had it a couple of times, and it’s always tasty. Your okra looks good too. I don’t think I’ve ever seen fresh okra up here in the store though – only canned 🙁

    Biz319 ,
Not gamey at all – just like a good beef burger.

    Bridget ,
You just need to try it!! Okra tastes like green beans but has a much different chewier texture.

    Viv ,
Thanks for your comment 🙂 I am really lucky to have such a perfect match.

    caitlin ,
I agree!! But we just can’t afford one right now 🙁

    Chelsea ,
HI!!! Thanks for the congrats 🙂 Can’t wait for the newest round of Lucy pictures!

    Christie ,
Thanks for the heads up – I should have probably tested it first. It didn’t work very well on our dining room table (looks all greasy) so maybe that should just use cleaner.

    Maggie ,
We have a bocce set, we just never use it! Guess we need to make the effort.

    Jo,
Thanks for the Vow To Thee clarification 🙂

As for okra, we just plopped this kind on the grill. If you search for “okra” in the yellow box at the top right you can see many different ways we’ve prepared it. My favorite is coated in cornmeal and baked.

    HangryPants,
Food for Life is the parent company and Ezekiel is one of their lines of products. Go to http://www.foodforlife.com and you can see all the different kinds.

That blondie bite looks great. If you haven’t tried the blondie recipe from Eat, Drink & Be Vegan, it’s soooo good. You can even reduce the sugar and oil by a lot and they still taste awesome.

Hmmmmm, good to know about Pledge. I’ve been using it for years on my (antique) furniture. I still love it, but I’ll definitely explore alternatives.

I’ve never tried bison, so I’m definitely picking some up at Whole Foods next time I’m there. Enjoy the rest of your weekend, Kath and readers!

Kath – I just found your blog about a week ago and really enjoy it.

I had my first bison burger this summer and my man and I love them too. We found a recipe that called for adding a couple of tablespoons of pesto to the meat before grilling and then a slice of provolone cheese. DEE-licious!! Red pepper pesto is also amazing. I highly recommend it some time.

Eeek Bison Burgers!! I was at the Bronx Zoo on Saturday and saw some real bison!

I have tried them though and do love them – just made me a little sad to read that after going through my zoo pics this morning. Have you ever tried Ostrich burgers? they’re a little gamey, but I LOVE them! There used to be a great burger place in NYC that served them, but I just checked the menu and I guess they took them off. If any readers are in the city though you should check out the place http://www.betterburgernyc.com/ It’s the ultimate healthy fast food. Air baked fries, whole wheat buns… and it tastes great!
