I Apologize In Advance

I am in a FOUL MOOD. We just came home to a message on our machine that the range is NOT being delivered tomorrow morning from 8-10am when it was promised but from 3:45-5:45pm – when we’ll be at a holiday symphony performance. This means we will most likely not be able to cook for Gran Bett (which we have been planning for 3 months to do) and will have to wait until Sunday – or later – to have this damn stove installed. I am SO MAD. I’ve been so patient and nice to everyone and this is just getting ridiculous. Apparently “the machine” scheduled our delivery based on zip code and “the machine” does not have the capability to reschedule anything. UGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG.

(I realize it’s not that big of a deal to not have a stove for one more day in the grand scheme of things, but I am so frustrated with this company’s delivery procedures. Sears is moving down and down on my list of nice companies. I hope their PR folks read this 👿 )

In other news, I cleaned my whole house this afternoon and sat down to read my book for 30 minutes while enjoying a mug of hot chocolate (made with 1% milk and Nesquik) around 4:30pm next to a Christmas candle and my space heater before I had to leave again to take my car to the shop.

DSC06609

The husband picked me up at the car place and we joined Gran Bett at Karen’s for a delicious dinner –

DSC06632

I had a little vino before dinner –

DSC06610

And a cracker with brie because I was hungry –

DSC06611

Karen cooked this vegan loaf that she LOVES from EarthFare. It comes pre-made and is a base of wheat gluten coated in puff pastry and stuffed with a sausage-like mixture of hazelnuts and spices. You just bake it for 45 minutes or so until it browns on the outside (no recipe b/c it was pre-made).

DSC06613

I ate 1.25 slices –

DSC06623

We also had collard greens with bacon, dates and blue cheese! My fav –

DSC06621

And some brown rice on the side – (I had wine pour #2 with dinner)

DSC06619

More wine – I probably had a full 6 oz glass in 3 aloquots

DSC06625

Karen caught us!!! 😳

DSC06628

I also had a few bites of Gran Bett’s yummy banana bread straight from the loaf.

The husband is very nice and is helping me with my deep breaths so I must go and rest now.

I’m so sorry about Sears! Even though I work in small appliances (and I’m in Ohio), I still feel bad that they’re putting you through the wringer.

If it’s any help, I’ve had my own troubles with “the machines,” and I consider myself pretty smart.

Kath vent all you want- NO ONE likes being delayed like that! How utterly frustrating. Ugh…Sears better get their act together!

I’m sorry you won’t be able to cook as planned, that is really disappointing. I know how much I love to entertain so to not have the means to do so would be a bit maddening.

I hope you manage to relax and take your mind off of it! 🙂

SO sorry about the Sears problems. Let’s hope they are new media-savvy and pay attention to consumer’s blogs.

All of Karen’s cooking looks amazing. Glad you at least had a great meal to enjoy with your family tonight. 🙂

Kath, I would be soooo mad, too! No need to apologize! Sears seems to be really bad with delivers and service calls. My parents had an all out battle with them not to long ago with respect to their “brand new” huge flatscreen TV that wasn’t working properly. They shared your same frustration. My Dad actually found a website called SEARS SUCKS, where people lodge their complaints about SEARS!!! I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you that it all works out for you!

That vegan loaf looks very interesting and the collards look delicious!

How horrible! I’m sorry for you.
You know, it may not be cool to drive a mini-van, but we have bought 4 couches, a new stove, dishwasher, and countless home items and taken them home immediately.
I was tempted to move our new fridge, but I realized getting it down the basement steps might be a hassle, so we got delivery. We did, however, move the stove downstairs ourselves without a problem.
I love my mini-van SO much, when it dies, I will be getting the same one.

Sears absolutely sucks when it comes to deliveries and customer service. We had a barbecue delivered from them a few years back – it was supposed to arrive by 6 p.m. but didn’t show up until after 11 p.m. Our neighbours were not at all impressed with the big diesel chugging engine puffing away in our driveway that late at night! We ended up having to return the stupid bbq because it didn’t register the temperature properly. I’ve had issues with their service department for our washer and dryer, too….suffice to say, we will never order another large appliance from them again. I hope your stove shows up on time and in perfect condition, and that you never have to call them for a service issue at all!

That stinks 🙁 One time “the machine” couldn’t schedule our power to come back on for a week but I got mad enough that they were able to change it… I don’t usually like to get upset with the call center people though – I was a call person for a summer during college and it was rough! I’m glad you were nice 🙂

Your delivery (or non-delivery) dilemma would drive me cuckoo nuts! I hate taking time off from work to wait on a delivery that is a no-show. I just have to remind myself that the delivery person is usually not the problem. I’m sure delivery people get a lot of flack from irate customers.

Have you considered writing a letter to Sears’ customer service department? I usually call the customer service department and voice my complaints but my father suggested that I follow-up with a letter. He learned the benefit of this when he had problems with a purchase/delivery of a refrigerator (not Sears – I think a locally owned business). He was pleasantly surprised when he received a letter in the mail with the company’s apology and and a check for $50. My father didn’t demand any type of compensation but he was impressed that the company acknowledged faults in their customer service and that they offered some sort of refund.

    Good luck!

I am NOT a fan of Sears either. After three weeks of no dishwasher this summer, we gave in and just bought another one. They were very difficult to work with interms of scheduling s repairmen. I will NEVER buy an appliance from them agan! So, I feel your pain!!!! Oh well, at least it looks like you had a fun night anyway:)

    kristie in seattle,
We would totally change the menu except that Karen bought a beef tenderloin about a month ago to serve at this occasion. I think she’d rather us relocate to her place than not serve it to Gran Bett!

    Allison,
Love the spark of love! Maybe it’s a lightening bolt?

    Ali ,
The oven does work, but there’s fluffy insulation-like stuff exposed on the stove-top and I’m afraid to turn the oven on in fear it bursts into flames.

    anon ,
I realize it’s the wine talking, but I don’t think that’s really an appropriate comment.

The vegan loaf from EarthFare looks delicious! I was jealous of your no stove last night…I went to my parents for dinner and they had no heat! The repairman was working when I arrived. It was 50 in the house (17 outside), so we wore our winter jackets and scarves as we ate dinner. BRR! The warmth from the food cooked in the oven only helped so much. By the time we finished eating, the furnace was working again. I hope today brings you better mood. Happy Saturday!

We stayed at the Westin St. Francis, which was the BlogHer official hotel and had a group discount. It was pricey for non-room block rooms, but VERY VERY nice and the perfect location so I would recommend it.

Oh, and when the husband and I were there for our honeymoon we stayed at the JW Marriot and that was less expensive (due to construction at the time) and also very, very nice.

if i can’t fit it in my car, then i don’t buy it from sears. too many people in my life have had problems with their delivery and repair people in the past.

i would call customer and demand, very politely, to speak to a manager, then explain the situation. they probably will apologize and do nothing. that’s when you should get mad. you can even tell him you want your money back. this should scare them, and they should offer to knock some of the price or the delivery fee off your bill.

i’d also write a very strongly worded letter to both the manager of the store where you purchased the oven as well as the regional sears manager and let them know that you are thoroughly disappointed in their service and will not be buying any items in Sears again.

the tough part is, then you have to stick to it.

honestly, the fact that you can’t cook your food is a BIG DEAL. what if you didn’t have a microwave?? what if your grill didn’t have a side burner?? it’s not okay for them to treat you as if you don’t matter, and you should let them know.

    melissa sue,
Done and done for the first part. They did waive the delivery fee at my insistence, so that was nice. And they have been very nice. But you’re right that I should write letters. Good thing I have Xmas break coming up – perhaps I will write them then. I’m not sure who to send it to though because I’ve already spoken to the store manager many times and am not sure how to get the higher ups.

    Did some quick research.

Their home base is Sears National Customer Relations, 3333 Beverly Road, Hoffman Estates, IL 60179.

I also found something really interesting about a member of their Board. Apparently if you call him and explain your situation, he just makes the problem disappear! It might be worth a try. You call 847-286-2500, ask for Mr.(Ed) Lampert’s office and tell the assistant that you want to file an “Executive Complaint.”

Apparently, calling their public relations office works, too: 847-286-8371.

I hope this helps you and you get your darned stove!!!

    melissa sue,
Thanks so much for doing that research for me!! I’ve saved it and will plan a letter writing sessions for as soon as my exams are over.

    Christy,
There’s really no recipe – more of a mix.

    1) Brown bacon (slice # depending on number served)

    2) Remove bacon from pan and add a huge bunch of chopped collards. Stand back from hot grease!

    3) Add some water after a while to help steam.

    4) Add 5-6 chopped dates.

    5) Plate, crumble with cooked bacon, crumble with blue cheese. Eat!

    Sirenjess,
    I highly recommend it!
