Honey Whole Wheat Love

Still SO SO thirsty!!! If I didn’t have this cold I’d head straight to the doctor ’cause this can’t be normal. I go into a panic if I’m more than 10 feet from my water bottle. It comes mostly between meals on the back of my tongue. Does anyone else experience this with sickness!?

Luckily I packed a new Herbal Water flavor to try today! OMG, Lemongrass – Mint – Vanilla was sooo heavenly. Love all three flavors!

IMG_6557 (640x427)

Afternoon snack! I didn’t end up eating my kiwi at lunch (felt very satisfied after I finished my yogurt) so I saved him for a snack with some pistachios I got as a sample a while ago. Doing some research on nutrient density!

photo

When I got home from work I had a major case of cabin fever and had to get out of the house!! Matt luckily agreed to go on a walk, so I created an excuse to walk to the grocery store for greens! I was seriously CRAVING greens like mad this afternoon. Water and greens. Body knows best!

But the real beauty on the dinner menu was PIZZA!

IMG_6562 (640x427)

This nice little ball was 100% Great Harvest. Honey whole wheat dough! If you have a Great Harvest near you, you can probably convince the owners to sell you some (some of them already sell it!). It made the BEST whole wheat pizza crust ever!!!

IMG_6551 (640x427)

[FYI, many of you have asked about Brew + Bake. Well, Matt gave it up 🙁 His domain was up for renewal and he just lost all motivation to blog. I encouraged him to keep it up just for a reference, but he didn’t feel it was worth the cost. So sorry! But we have a new pizza crust now anyways –> ]

Rolled on out…

IMG_6554 (640x427)

Topped with leftover Ragu, sautéed peppers and mushrooms, tomatoes and Organic Valley Pepperjack and Mild Cheddar cheeses! Plus herbs.

IMG_6556 (427x640)

AWESOME AWESOME pizza!

IMG_6564 (640x427)

The Honey Whole Wheat made the ideal crust – nice and crispy on the bottom (thanks to the help of our pizza stone and a 500* oven) and puffy and doughy on top.

IMG_6578 (640x427)

IMG_6574 (640x427)

I got my greens fix with a pile of steam-sautéed (I basically sauté them in a bit of water) TJ’s greens mix plus some extra spinach, drizzled in lemon olive oil and seasoned [too heavily] with Creole seasoning.

Sorry about those WEIRD ADS that were playing on KERF today!! They were related to that puzzle I embedded last night and I removed it so they should be gone. Must have been pretty funny to hear fast food chains advertising their way in!

Definitely going to have a dark chocolate tonight. Dumbledore said so 🙂

That pizza looks incredible! Especially the crust!

This might be a dumb question, but I’m intrigued. When you say you saute the greens in water, how exactly do you do that? Do you put water in the frying pan with the lemon olive oil? or is the oil added after?

I heat the pan, pour in 2 tbsp of water, then the greens and then just stir them around. The water evaporates and the greens turn bright green. Then I add flavors like seasonings or a drizzle of oil or maple syrup.

That pizza looks delicious! I would take your advice about getting to a Great Harvest, but I looked up the nearest one and it’s ~60 miles from here. 🙁

I’ll stick to trying to make a 100% WW bread that doesn’t turn out to be a rock for now. :p

By the way, is that March’s issue of the ADA Journal? I’ve only gotten February’s so far.

if the drinking thing keeps up and it is weirding you out, i agree with heading to the dr. and making sure it’s nothing! the likelihood of you developing type 1 diabetes at this age is very very low but not completely 0 and there are other things that can cause increased thirst as well (also very very unlikely).

Your pizza dough looks so beautiful! Often times I find that I have a hard time rolling it out in a pretty circle, it usually starts to tear. I’m not sure if this is related to the dough (Trader Joe’s Whole Wheat) or my rolling technique. Maybe you will do a video one day on rolling out pizza dough for the challenged rollers out there.

I had to comment on your thirst – I have always been a thirsty person (sometimes I get nervous about it too, but my whole family is like that) Anyway, I am fairly newly pregnant (yay!) and now my thirst is similar to what you described. In no way am I implying that you might be pregnant, just giving a shout out to terrible thirst! I wake up every morning with that awful dryness on the back of my tongue and almost feel like you do when you have a hangover. Ah…the weird things that happen when you are pregnant!

    hey kath,
i don’t want to scare you (since i doubt it is the case), but excessive thirst can be a symptom of undiagnosed Type I diabetes, as I’m sure you know from your studies. This seems like a sudden temporary thing, but if it continues, maybe you should check it out at a doctor’s office? in any case, feel better!

I sometimes get super thirsty when I’m getting a sore throat or have a really mild one. You know how you can get a sore throat that just feels scratchy & dry and the only thing that helps is drinking? My last cold had that in the beginning. BTW, it hung around for over 2 WEEKS! Horrible. But I’m pregnant so my immune system isn’t running at 100% hopefully that won’t happen to you.

okay, a little worried about you! I seemed to remember you talking about being thirsty before lately so I looked back, and you said you were “so thirsty” and thought about water frequently in several other blog entries in Jan. and Feb. Also, having diabetes often feels like having a cold or flu, without the cold or flu symptoms.

You might want to get a fasting glucose test. If you don’t want to go to the dr., go to a pharmacy or big box store & get a name brand glucose meter like Freestyle or OneTouch that has a rebate equal or greater than the price. Look for one that comes with a sample of 10 test strips (many don’t). Even Wal-Mart’s very cheap Relion isn’t so bad. Avoid anything called Truetrack or Wavesense.) Then test your blood when you get up after a 8-12 hour fast. Easy-peasy!

MMMMh yOUR PIZZA LOOKS GOOD! I Have a cheese-related question: I want to make paneer (an Indian cheese where full-fat milk is boiled with some lemon and then drained):

    1. Put the milk to boil. When it starts boiling, remove from the heat and wait for 2 to 3 minutes. Then, add the lemon juice and stir gently till all the milk curdles.

    2. Leave covered for some time. Then, pour over a thin muslin cloth and drain out the whey.

    3. Cover with a cloth and place a weight on top to drain out the water.

    4. Cut into piecs or crumbles as required.

I looked the calories up, but didn’t find anything reliable. What do you think? Would calories and fat “go away” with draining? Thanks a lot for your answer!

    Reply
    • Kath says

      February 24, 2010 at 9:46 am

I think the draining is removing mostly water and perhaps some of the whey protein, but I would just assume the macronutrients stay the same to be no the conservative side.

I get water cravings like this. I used to worry about it but all my tests came back clear so I guess some days I need more water than others. You do lose more water when you have a head cold (all that mucus!!!) so that might be it.

Funny, I too started to come down with a cold last friday, thought I fought it off for the most part until at work yesterday. My head was so clogged (like I was driving in the mountains) It was very distracting to say the least!
Anyways, like you said keep listening to your body and its inner guidance system (especially where chocolate is concerned:))

Don’t worry, I’m struggling with a cold too at the moment (not so much fun when one’s travelling!) and I’m thirsty a lot as well. Partly I think it’s psychological because water soothes my throat, but also I know I’m drinking far more than I usually do. It’s better than *not* wanting to drink water, right?

    Also, Dumbledore knows best. Always.

What kind of Creole Seasoning do you use? Might it be Tony Chachere’s? That’s the real stuff, coming from a deep southern girl.

    That pizza looks amazing.

Funny thing about the ads, I never saw them. I always read in my google reader and then click over when I comment.

I know others have said it before but extreme thirst like that can be a sign of diabetes. I am always super thirsty no matter how much water I drink and my doctor had me tested. Thankfully, no diabetes but it may be worth getting checked out. Even super healthy people like yourself can have it.

That pizza looks gorgeous, as do those delectable greens. I love the simple way you prepared them. I like my veggies minimally seasoned, so that approach looks particularly appealing.

    Hope you feel better!

Sounds like you have the same time of cold/flu that I had! I was thirsty *all* of the time and could not get enough greens in me. So weird! The good news is that I only felt sick for 5 days, and I felt better about as fast as it took me to get sick in the first place. 😀

Your pizza looks incredible!! I just did a post on pizza dinner too – but mine pales in comparison. We use Rustic Crust, I think it’s time to step it up and use dough. Does Great Harvest sell their dough at their stores?

    Love the Dumbledore/chocolate reference! 🙂

    Kath,
I’m on the tail end of what it sounds like you’re getting, and I am still DYING of thirst every day. I too drink plenty of water on a daily basis, but while I was sick I was having even more (close to 96 ounces many days!). Keep hydrating, it’ll pass!

That pizza looks beautiful!! Again, another reason I wish we had a Great Harvest here! My husband and I usually buy a big dough ball and cut it in half, but I think next time we should just make a thicker crust. Looks delicious!

How awesome does that pizza look?! I love make pizza at home…it’s so much cheaper than buying, and so much better for you! Plus, it’s fun for the kids to get involved too… my son loves to choose what topping we are going to have. Going to have to hunt down some of this crust though…

Hi Kath. I read here all the time & am a terrible at leaving comments. First, I want to say that I wish I had a GH nearby b/c that crust looks AMAZING. Second, I always always get a dry feeling in the back of my throat when I am fighting a cold that I hasn’t quite developed yet. Like, it’s a pre-symptom. I take it as a signal to up hydration, vit-c and rest…and then cross my fingers that it doesn’t progress to a full blown cold/sickness. Take care! And thanks for inspiring so many of us to eat better!

Extreme thirst can be a symptom of diabetes. If you still have it when your cold is gone, get to a doctor asap.

We will do a dough video the next time we make pizza! The key is to get your dough to room temp.

Also, I’ll see if Matt will type up his recipe this week!

Wish that restaurants would be willing to make whole wheat crusts, they taste better than the standard in my opinion.

I love the steam-sautee idea for spinach. I like to cook my spinach but it often comes out too oily. I will have to give this a shot and perhaps drizzle some truffle oil on top once cooked :).

I wish we had a Great Harvest here in Canada where I am, but no. 🙁 That pizza bread looks delicious! I love making it homemade – it’s just so much better than the pre-rolled crusts.

Every once in a while I crave veggies … the last few days my meals have been slightly more carb-heavy (more in the bread sense, not fruit) and today I’m just craving roasted vegetables for dinner! Like you say, you gotta listen to the body!

    Kath,

I just discovered that I have a Great Harvest in my neighborhood (Alexandria, VA). The bf and I went in yesterday and received a free cookie because it was our first time visiting. We also sampled a slice of the garlic cheddar bread and ended up buying a honey whole wheat loaf for paninis 🙂 Super good and I of course thought of you and Matt while we were there! Cheers

    Hi Kath,
I saw a breakfast recipe in a magazine for combining oats and yogurt overnight and it looked so good. Well I went back to make it and couldn’t remember what magazine it was in, searched all over my house… so I went on google, found your website and absolutely love it!!! There are so many great recipes for oats and yogurt I don’t know which one to try first!! This website is awesome! I already added it to my favorites bar and can’t wait to search for oodles of new recipes. I’m a health and fitness nut myself so this is great for me. Thanks!
Keep the healthy food ideas coming!!

    Kath-

Love reading your blog! The pizza looks amazing but I have a question. I live on my own and love to make things at home that you can get at restaurants…such as pizza. I think I’ve seen you make pizza on your blog in smaller portions and since you guys make the dough yourselves, can you recommend how much dough to make for a one-person mini-pizza. I bought WW dough from a local bakery and not being big on leftovers, I would like to freeze it in individual portions, but really don’t have any clue even about how much to portion for each one! Any advice would be much appreciated!

By the way….found a great harvest and love it!!!

      Jamie,

Do you have a food scale? I’d go by ounces. Bread is usually about 70 calories per ounce, and I’d say a crust of maybe 3-4 ounces would be ideal for a single dinner?
